Give all the credit to his mother? She left steve Allen in a hospital for an entire year when he was extremely sick & she was working the road. Abandoned him for a year. In a hospital.
I'm not familiar with the information about Steve being left in a hospital. I do know Steve's father died when Steve was 18 months old. His parents were a vaudeville act. Since his widowed mother had to seek employment as a (now) single act. With this change in circumstances there was no other option but to send Steve to relatives while she worked on the road.
Excellent interview. I've always admired Steve Allen for his wit and intelligence, one of my all-time favorite comedians.
