  • This is a graphite drawing of my Mother and Father, my twin sister and I and our children. It was a reference photo that didn’t include a few of us so I had family members take selfies and send to me so I could include them.
It took around ten days to complete, using the spare time I had to draw.
Medium: Daler Rowney heavyweight paper, 0.3 mechanical pencil hb and 2h leads. Clutch pencil 6h lead, derwent graphic pencils grades 8h, 7h, 4h, 2h, hb leads, round mono zero eraser, Fabre castell black polychromos pencil, Carte de Paris black pastel pencil, brush to blend, graphite powder and earbuds/qtips.

I've just been asked to do a family photo but I've never drawn multiple people in one picture before. Sometimes they overlap each other and that's new to me.

+Kima Ali have you tried gridding the picture first to get the right layout? Or are they from multiple photos? I definitely prefer to grid if the portrait layout is challenging

Artist Marie Lowe I don't know how to do a grid

It would've been nice to see this in real time. I have been practicing small faces and trying to make them as detailed as possible

Sister your family portrait is really beautiful. I've been working on one for my kids for a long time off and on.
Watching you draw them is so inspiring personally because it seems I can draw when in particular moods. I'm told I'm too picky when I drawing and that I want each one to be perfect. Hmm, maybe, but if doesn't look right to me I just don't see it for what I have in mind to give as gifts. So, I hope now I can finish a few more. I hope mine in the end turns out anywhere as nice as yours did. It's been 30-40 since I was really into art and now I draw pretty much contemplating my life and taking time to see how good life really is and everything that makes Life valuable--it's the Art of Living.
I'm sure you Dad and everyone loved your gift from the heart.
    ❤️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

+Everett White I understand as it took me a long time to learn the art of drawing while not in the mood. I find after around two hours drawing I get in the zone but having to stop to do other things during the day I have found difficult. I just push forward but their are times I just sit at my desk and can’t lift a pencil lol
I think it’s good to be picky about your work to an extent. Perfectionism kind of comes with the realism thing but you must take a break from a portrait to look again with fresh eyes. Art really does feed the soul. Thank you for such a lovely message 😊🙏🏽 best wishes back to you from the UK ✍🏽👌🏽

Wow!!!! I've been watching your videos for only a week now and am blown away. Your technique is phenomenal and your skill is incomparable to anything I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing. I'm starting to get back into art and have always been frustrated with drawing portraits (even though I love them). You're awesome.

Lovely message! Everything can be frustrating at first. I still get frustrated and have to find a way to push through. Draw whatever it is that makes you happy. I always loved faces. Nice to hear from you 👍🏼

+Andre Giles Hello to you in Trinidad and Tobago! I love to hear where my viewers are from and what they do. I made a video called ‘my art materials’ that will explain my tools as I use mostly the same tools each portrait but I will list them for you also from here on. Great to know an officer out there is following my work 😉
