    Whenever I see old footage of these guys playing without a Helmet or any Head Gear it is just crazy.

    • @emmaduncan2991
      @emmaduncan2991 5 лет назад +16

      even crazier, the last helmet-less player (Craig MacTavish) was still playing sans helmet as late as 1994 when he picked up his last Stanley cup ring, as a member of the New York Rangers.

      And no head or face protection for goalies, it is crazy the back catcher in baseball wore a mask long before hockey goalies did.

      Agreed, it sucks that it took Bill Masterton's death to get players to, at least, consider wearing helmets during games

      Funny nowadays shoulder pads are basically made of Kevlar. Full caged helmets. And Im almost certain there are more concussion issues/ head injuries today compared to the days of the helmet less players?

    • @mikehanzal9562
      @mikehanzal9562 4 года назад +1

      @Steve Fortuna so whats your point? Of course player's are bigger, stronger, faster now a days. My point is with the upgrades in equipment. And lack of fighting/enforcers. Dipships in todays game are taking libertys on whoever they want? Rise in concussions/ shorten careers. Look at Crosby. Back in the day nobody touched #99. Players today are fucking robotic morons

    I vaguely recall when he died. I was only about 4 but growing up in Montreal hockey was right of passage and both my 2 older brothers' were Canadiens and hockey fans. Think it must of been one of them who mentioned it. It's AMAZING that there wasn't more fatalities or serious injuries in hockey from that era. The other amazing thing was it took 11 more years before NHL made helmets mandatory. Even then some players didn't have to because it was grandfathered in. Of note Guy Lafleur who wore a helmet his first few years in league, got rid of it in his 3rd or 4th season and never wore one for rest of of career which lasted until early 1990s.

    • @dante6562
      @dante6562 3 года назад

      Exactly. It’s truly a miracle that he was the only one that died, let alone got extremely injured when there were no helmets. Also that story is really cool!

    I used to go to the Sam Houston Coliseum, and also The Summit in Houston, Texas to watch the Houston Aeros featuring the legendary Gordie Howe during the 1970s, playing Bobby Hull & other great players. No helmets worn at all. Great memories.🏒

    Never knew he only played 4 games, I always thought he had a long career thus the award. Minn North Stars should have never left, they had the best look and logo. **EDIT yes, 4 goals / 38 games.

    Interesting that they have footage of some of the game but not the fatal hit.

    • @weaselsuit

      I’m not trying to be morbid or anything, but my gut instinct tells me they could have found footage of the fatal hit but chose (understandably so) not to air it. The official “Word” is that the footage doesn’t exist. I think it very well could. We’ll never see it, and I think that’s just fine under the circumstances.

    This is the most American thing I've ever heard: "Bill Masterton was Canadian, but his story is an American tragedy...", like all Canadians would say: "yeah, fuck this dude, we don't know him"

    • @analogkid4957
      @analogkid4957 2 года назад +9

      I don’t understand your point King Kaspars. The station covering the story is a local Minneapolis station covering this story. A historic story on the tragic death of one of the early North Stars players is a local one.
      It doesn’t matter what country a person is from - a tragic death affects all people. He is considered a local hero to the people of Minnesota. The reporter clearly mentioned Bill Masterton was born in Manitoba and Canadian but he settled in Minnesota even a few years before his brief hockey career with the North Stars. Apparently he also played for the American National Hockey team as reported which he probably volunteered to play for them. I don’t understand your point. It’s a tragic story for all people no matter what country your from but for the people of Minnesota an American city it’s an especially tragic story for one of their own died tragically during a hockey game played in Minnesota.
