Bit of a trip-hop guy myself. Sneaker pimps is a prime example. Portishead as well. Tricky was the king. This one never bit me because a girl I knew was in the video (she was later the star of That 70 show and Orange is the New Black so they were weird too) but everything by Tricky from this period is my personal soundtrack. All hail Martina topley bird.

Trip Hop Songs tend to have what sounds like a heartbeat as the backing beat. If you listen you don't realize it but it rides in the background and makes the song seem smooth and ethereal.
Fun fact: the repeat sample is incidental music from an early James Bond movie. I think it was 'Goldfinger'. I'm not sure that is ever aknowledged by the band. Also Spin Spin sugar has a crazy video where the lead singer is a cyborg that has broken her programme and gone crazy. What Lex said about the music sound alien us not far off. Futuristic is what I think they were going for.

I believe that this tune went way up near the top of the charts the year it was out. The great thing about the 90's is the variety of popular hits. I feel like since the early 2000's, there's a sameness to today's hits, but perhaps I'm missing something. The 80's and 90's were very eclectic. There are great tunes in every decade, but I think the music video era really upped the diversity of genres. There is no way a song like this would become a hit nowadays. It's a bit strange and not easy to digest.

I thought this was way ahead of it’s time. It has a kind of trip-hop vibe, before that was a thing. It may be the first popular trip-hop song. This is actually a remix. The original version by this band is just a rock song. Major improvement though. The sample is from De La Soul - “Breakadawn” I love this song. According to the singer the song is about growing up in a small town. If you are an artist living nowhere and you can’t get out it feels like dying.
I remember this song on the 97 version of Saint with Val Kilmer lot of good artist on the sound track. To me this song was in the class of all the songs for the James Bond movie though The Saint was a similar type of movie.

This song was huge in the clubs at the time, the whole album is actually really good. Unfortunately they decided to fire the lead singer soon after, and they never repeated this success or even came close.
After Sneaker Pimps broke up, founder Chris Corner went on to a solo career as IAMX, and is brilliant imo.

@@melod7670 all due respect, aside from disco, funk, smooth jazz, jazz fusion, soul music with a sprinkle of early punk, it does not compare to the wider variation. The 90s had all that plus what you already heard. When I listen to 70's music now, all I hear is Boomer Rock..and I'm a Gen X'er..🤣

@@navocar I'm just thinking about Pink Floyd, The Stones, Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, and The Grateful Dead among others all being in their prime in the 1970s. That's just my opinion though. That's what is great about music, it's all subjective to your taste.
I thought this was way ahead of it’s time. It has a kind of trip-hop vibe, before that was a thing. It may be the first popular trip-hop song. This is actually a remix. The original version by this band is just a rock song. Major improvement though. The sample is from De La Soul - “Breakadawn” I love this song.
According to the singer the song is about growing up in a small town. If you are an artist living nowhere and you can’t get out it feels like dying.
It’s very captivating. Her style keeps you glued.

I remember this song on the 97 version of Saint with Val Kilmer lot of good artist on the sound track. To me this song was in the class of all the songs for the James Bond movie though The Saint was a similar type of movie.
I think her voice sounds like Kylie Minough, listen carefully and focus, you can find the similarity about those two...!
