  • Building and Installing a Barred Owl Box: A Father-Son DIY Adventure
We have seen a barred Owl hanging around our house just outside the window several times in the past few weeks. To keep it hanging around we decided we would build a nesting box for the barred owl, I did a bit of research and it turns out you need to have the nesting boxes out by the end of January Since we are still about mid January we got right to work! I used utility boards from the big box store in town since they were fairly inexpensive boards and will hold up just as well as the #2 pine boards they sell right next to them. I ended up using 2 1" x 12" x 8' boards. But since the dimensions of the box needed to be 13 by 15 I ended up having to cut the boards to length and then rip them down and use pocket hole screws to connect them together to get the proper width boards.
Once I had all the parts cut to the proper size I went and got my son to help me put the box together and let me tell you, He had a BLAST! He loved every bit of it! Once he went to bed I put a coat of paint on it to help the nesting box last longer. From the research I did I found out that white pine boards will last from 5-7 years untreated outside in the elements, But if you paint them it extends the life of them quite a bit! So I put a couple layers of paint on it to make sure it lasts for many years to come! I used a rope to hoist the nesting box up in the tree and once it was attached I added some dry leaves for bedding material. And finally I added a couple branches as a perch for the owls! I hope they find the house and like it enough to make it home! Thanks for following along on our journey! We will see you next time!?

Watching you sons joy as he drills is great
I had 14 Cub Scouts "Help" make Wood Duck nesting boxes and Mallard nesting tubes this summer
First a quick walk down the marsh dikes to show them where the boxes and tubes were going
While taking the walk many of the Cub Scouts saw wild ducks sitting on the water for the first time

There will definitely be a video of that! Nothing so far though. I haven't seen the owl in a week or so but I've heard him in the woods just yesterday
