- Is Horsepower to Weight Ratio the Key? || K24 First Gen CRX Racecar
By Brian Gillespie and Aaron Gaghagen
Back in the day the thing that surprised people about Honda performance was how quick the cars were with less horsepower than the competitors. Many muscle car owners were left disappointed in head to head match-ups against "little Hondas with lawnmower engines." They learned quickly that horsepower to weight ratio was not in the big block old school gas guzzlers' favor. Flash forward to 2024, technology has come a long way. So is a lightweight Honda still the cheat code?

Good stuff brian! This car is so nice ❤
I got a 2000 civic sedan with a k24a and type S 6 speed trans, 196tq 228 hp. Best daily I have ever had 😍
Horsepower sells engines.
Torque wins races.
Check out what Eric Kutil does with a 202whp K20 In Grid Life TC
He is kicking butt with his new car!
Got a car in your area you might like to see. An all-motor 6g72 in a 3000gt. In the glendale area and looking for a tuner. Its on a haltech elite 750,WB2,ic-7 dash. Its not a honda but it's built very similar to an all-motor honda.
Hi ya Brian, was that k24a a"Stock" motor with a better turn programmed into it. I'm looking forward to doing the swap in my Aussie bread stock as rock 1987 Ed 6.
The K24a is basically stock with a tune.
Man I got a 91 crx collecting dust while I save up for a K24 swap. I want to build a time attack race car.
How much more of challenge is the k vs a B in the first gen? I imagine the header being behind might be a useful change?
B series is an easier fit requiring no cutting or large modifications. K requires a bit more work to be done to fit it in.
what is the spring rates?
30 mm torsion bars up front with 600lb springs in the rear. Koni all around to control them. Actually considering stepping up the rear springs to get a bit more rotation out of the car. Having to adjust the rear bar a lot and would like to run a bit less. Less twitchy in the transitions.
If you want more torque buy a dodge or a diesel. Honda is about high revs close ratio boxes and lightweight baby.
My very first car was an 1984 crx. I've owned a lot of cars since then but the crx is one of the few I ever think about. I recently bought a 91 crx si as a project. Hoping to k swap it eventually. Got to have AC, I'm told it's possible so we'll see. It's a pile right now but I love it.
I daily drove a stiff sprung B16 CRX for years, complete with spherical trailing arm bearings and suspension top hats. Had a Hasport B series conversion kit in it, glad to see you're still keeping it real Brian!
Was it like this? Because I hate the clunk I get from my BC racing BR coilovers that I need to fix. But this makes my problem look like complaining.
That exact magazine is how I found out about HASPORT back in the day. I had a 1989 Integra with B18 LS swap, Hasport mounts, Energy suspension bushing, Suspension technics sway bars, KYB's, Jackson racing torsion bars, etc, etc. I even found a Mugen body kit in a junk yard in Ohio (said MOONCRAFT products and MUGEN). Fixed it up, and it was nice. I got T Boned a few days later. Fun car, and thanks for the memories. Miss that car.
Gotta ❤ torque. In 99-2000 had 93 240sx coupe. 99 Si civic had similar hp, but 240 would always win simply from torque.
the dream man! that’s badass
Probably add some different struts for the street but hell yes I would daily the fuck out of that thing
Absolutely
There's no replacement for displacement.
He did those time not launching
I like the old school shift light on the dash and think that car would be great fun
Funny to think when it was stock it did 0-60 in 9.8 seconds! Come a long way!
A lil quicker
@@VTECAcademy just a little! 😂
Didn't know there was so much traffic in Mexico....
For real
Just did the timing on my friends 08 tsx w a k24z2 and a 6spd then my 2010 crv k24z6 a week ago. I had an del sol I wanted to kswap. Always looking for something if a deal comes up!
That’s how you do it. Patience and preparedness are key.
Check out the 4th gen Prelude 4WS on Bring a trailer
@@stephbarbershop2518 wow oddly I saw an almost identical car in the headshop parking lot while in the TSX the guy bought his in AZ beautiful car all stock 39k miles I learnt then about 4ws!
Love the k but I have b17 blacksheep in 89 si hatch n can't see me getting rid of that b17
Can you do more cr-z content please!! I plan on k swapping a cr-z and would love to know in detail what should I need
Hello. Had 7 crx’s. My 84 was great on gas. The 91 si with a DOHC ZC non V was amazing in the top end. But the 1991 dx converted to B16 with an LSD trannny and 5 lug conversion was the funniest. JDM 150 mph speedo. Kids always wanted to race on Friday night when I was cruising into the city for work. Although I did pull away from most, Glad to see this first Gen getting some HP. Hopefully you guys have upgraded the brakes.TY
Yes brakes were very much upgraded. Wilwood calipers, 11 inch two piece rotors, Hawk DT-60 pads, Motul 700 fluid, and Honed brake scoops. Did a few videos on my channel on the brakes and the upgrades to them. Awesome you owned an 84. I also have an 85 that’s all original with 75k on it. Love these little cars.
Hi Brian! I own a 1987 CRX SI, and I would like to know if you can do the same swap to my car? How can I contact you directly?
Sorry, we don’t offer this service.
Haven’t started the video yet but here’s me face right now! 😍
I miss my ef hatch :(😢
Hybrid How-To !!!! 😁🎉
Thank u
You'll have to really be tryin
If you wanna beat Brian
Ahahaha!
Brian you have inspired me to do a daily driving video on my Kcar.
I have done mainly highway and street daily in my car and have thoroughly enjoyed the feeling despite the stuffness.
Thanks Brian - I needed this... I've had a couple of gen 1 CRX project cars for so many years (since the early RPR days!). I've never been able to let them go and every time you post some gen 1 content I remember why :)
As much as I love the K, I've maintained my 'grumpy old man position' that the gen 1 should never have a K since the day Honda revealed the K series... maybe it's time to let that go 😂
RPR is still alive. The K series makes it an absolute beast. A blast to drive!
I'm an old pepper from way back and have a K torsion Civic and thoroughly enjoy it.
Same here. So much knowledge on the site back in theday😮
@@1stGenCRXs Wow, I just assumed it would be long gone - I'd better go have a look
Brian do you have an idea of when the axles for this swap will be available? I bought the new swap mounts as soon as Hasport released them and just waiting on axles to have my CRX on the road. Thanks in advance!
You can call and order them.
Love this car!❤
:08 that BASS DROP
Dream swap and I’ve still got an 87 CRX Si.
I can haz?
When you say the diff wanders, do you mean it slides to one side or the other? My Si does this in bad weather.
It has a Kazz clutch type LSD. Probably more a product of the surface than the LSD
L15 swap an 8th gen civic for the People!
Curious on a 1/4m on that chassis engine combo
Hoping to find out this fall, just for fun. On the B16 putting 148hp to the tires it would run 13.5s on drag slicks and 13.9s on street tires at 99mph.
@@1stGenCRXs That thing must be very light.
@@JSAFIXIT minus my big but it’s 2035 lbs. used to be under 1900lbs back in the day. But adding roll cage and other safety tech added weight
@1stGenCRXs Not bad at all, you're still about 180-190lbd lighter than my 91 si
I dont know what your doing but my rex b20v with ys1 nonlsd runs solid 9.4 to 9.5 .i guess after driving my rex for 15 yrs .seat time is definetly important.smfh.
I shit on kseries
Seat time is VERY IMPORTANT. That's why Brian mentioned he haven't drove this car to those extends. The owner of the car mention running 13.5 on a B16A, there is no problem for him seeing high 11's in the build.
