We took a number of these to the desert in 1990 and ragged them out. Decided it wasn't worth cleaning them up to bring them home so just left them for the units that were replacing us. I went back in 1993 and a number of them were still going strong. Ugly they might be but they were goers.
Pull the plate on the floor where the 4x4 lever would be and shift it into hi gear. They put a transfer case in them and lock in it 4 low to get the low gearing.
They have a Dana 70 rear with 488 gears. There is also a np208 tcase attached to the tf727 that's locked in low range with a bracket bolted to it instead of a shift mechanism. There is also a chunk of steel under the bed in between the frame rails to add extra weight to it. I've owned a couple of these things.
I worked on these in the air force for many years and cant stand the ground the sit on. They are grossly unreliable especially in cold weather bases. The glow plug systems never did work right, the electrical systems were scary even new, and parts are hard to find. Those turn signals on the front were shit rigged after they were built and every one had been messed with 1000's of times afterwards to function. I could go on and on. Oh and that weight on the back, he might as well get scrap valve from that, because no one will want that piece of shit.
A couple more fun facts. The front axle is just a tube straight axle but the hubs are actually Dana 44 8 lug 4x4 hubs. Pop of the center cap and you will find a hollow spindle for an axle to pass through and splines for lockouts inside the hub. Also the frames are late 70's 2 door Cherokee Chief Wagoneer frames and not cj. Another is that rear Dana 70 has a 72 or 74" wms (can't remember). You would have to run a dually Dana 60 to match that width.
@Craig E was going to say the same.... Built one back in 1999/2000 with dana 60's and 360 with QT. Sold it to a collector with a Jeep museum in Italy. Wish I had kept it.
I drove these things when I was in the Air Force as an aerospace ground equipment mechanic. They could pull like a mule but man if you had to pull something heavy to the end of the runway it was a long haul. Dennis than YOU for the trip down memory lane. That cab sure took me back.
There is a bolt in the top on the transfer case that makes it only go into 4 low in some models and the later ones don’t have the high gears in the transfer case
It should have a TorqueFlite 727 transmission and yes the transfer case is locked in low hence the low top speed. Can't wait to see the build! You can make an awesome Jeep truck out of the CJ10a!
Michael Moore We also had one when I was in the MS ANG. We could tow two GPU’s side by side and it didn’t strain at all. A couple years later, we got the Dodge bobtail with the Cummins and it went a little faster than the Jeep. It also had impressive turbo sound.
You should perform some various torque tests on this beast before you start on her conversion! I'm curious to see what she's capable of! Personally, I think you should leave her as she is, except for maybe changing out the low(not tall) differential gear ratios. Great content, Dennis! As always!
I was an Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) mechanic in the Air Force back in the early 90's and we used those to pull support equipment back and forth on the flight line. They were awesome vehicles and yes they could pull the weight. Can't wait to see what they do with it what with the short wheelbase.
Those Nissan Diesels were smooth and quiet. That engine sounds like it may have some bearing problems. That knock is way more harsh than a fuel knock. Maybe the hammering is coming from the air compressor. You will not be able to change very much with a rubber ratio change. Dana axles are plentiful and a matching set may be well under $500.
Our airport Tug on the old Myrtle Beach Air force base had a flat head Chrysler straight 6 with a 2 speed automatic transmission and 7:14 gear set! Plus they had an A.P.U. to power the Hanger with ground power that had a Chrysler Red Ram 331 Hemi!
I can tell you really enjoyed driving this Jeep. If you ever get a chance to drive a Coleman tug, I hope it's one with 4 wheel steering. It was slow, but necessary to move big items around on USAF bases.
That CJ 10 the 1985 would make such a awesome plow vehicle for me a beer in Vermont there's a lot of small tight driveways in the city well it's not much of a city in Burlington Vermont but the driveways are pretty small and that thing would be perfect for a plow truck
Worked many years on an Air Force flightline. These were used to tow supporting ground equipment not actual aircraft, ok, maybe the teeny tiny trainers. Very strict speed limit on the flightline.
Just leave it as is and use it around the shop as tow tug. You will be very surprised how useful it will be. This is a cool find and only original once.
The reason for the low mileage is for 30 plus years that vehicle drove around the flight line towing support equipment for aircraft operations. How many hours on the vehicle? Check the hour meter. Where I was stationed we left them running 24/7 for weeks on end. They didn't like to start in cold climates. It is a rare find haven't seen that many jeeps at the surplus auctions. Starting to see Ford vehicles that were modified for flight line use most have had 4 wheel drive.. As for that bed you have got yourself a boat anchor. After you remove the bed and get the transfer case in drive take it for a ride, completely different vehicle.
The rear axle isn’t geared that low, they had a transfer case locked in low internally. You can swap in a shift mechanism from a NP208 and get high range. There is a 1200lbs weight behind the cab under the bed. That diesel isn’t that powerful but they go forever. I’ve had a few CJ10a jeeps, fun projects. I drove the 4wd versions of these back when we still used them on the flight line. It may only have 11k miles but it’ll have a ton of hours, we generally towed at 15mph max...all day, every day.
There was one of these on a abandoned vehicle lot in N.C. . It had a Dana 300 transfer case and Dana 60 and 61 axles . Did not make sense to have that 61 in there unless that was a replacement at some point . Maybe left for weight? No tags on the diffs to know ratios. No drive shafts Seemed like a bastardized vehicle .
Hi kool tug l have a 1990 dodge tug it has a 12v Cummins, 727 auto, it had a Dana 70 with 7.17 gear set and locker, the top speed was 25 mph. I built it into a 4x4, with a Dana 60, 70, 3.54 gear set and a power lock. I used two tug beds and I now have a short wheel base duelly, it has 14k miles on it. Thanks for the videos
Hey Dennis. You've got it backwards The numerically higher the gears the "shorter" the gear The lower the number the "taller" the gears. I know you know this, but somebody's gotta bust your chops Keep up the good work. Love the chanel. 👍
I have one 1986 CJ10 A It has a 4 wheel drive transfer case locked in low range. Pull the transfer case and remove the pin locking the shifter and put a 4 wheel drive shifter so you can select 4 low 4 high and 2 high. I installer ford front and rear 4 wheel running gear in it. I moved the rear axle back and put in new springs in the rear. wait until he removes the rear tool box and finds a 1800 pound block of steel in under the tool box to give it enough weight to pull AIR CRAFT Fighter JET'S.
So awesome 👍😁 I would love to have that beast! What a build that could be!!! Thanks for sharing it with us! Great episode man the jeeps you find one day I will buy one 👍😀🤤
Cool jeep, as for a build I would like to see...would love for you to build a cj7 using the best parts from the best years, and painting it in a original color/decal combo. It would be cool to see how (what parts) you would build a cj7. Thanks.
I painted dozens of those when I got out of the Navy. I had a job with a government contractor recondioning military vehicles. And they are crazy to "drive". Crazy to crawl just didn't sound right. You're a genius Dennis. I never would ha e thought to do anything with them as a civilian vehicle. Looking forward to the finished product.
I bought one in Pensacola in 2002, didn't run, had big plans for it. Wanted to put the body on a CJ5 somehow, then it got stolen. Still mad about it, lol
Dennis a friend of mine has a pick up Jeep like those but needs to be rescued it’s in McAllen Tx, south Texas let me know how can I send you pics of it ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Miles mean jack. Our fuel truck we just bought had 2600 miles but it was a 92 model. Been though several engines and tranny's according to the vehicles history. Miles mean crap on military vehicles.
Can't understand how yanks in the military would strip a new truck to keep an old truck going. I used to buy ex USAF stuff here in the UK and it was always the same, everything butchered. Trucks with 1000 miles on with many vital parts stripped and nothing unplugged just hacked! Crazy😲
Are you in Oklahoma City Oklahoma I thought I recognized. On Cue but I'm not sure would you please tell me one way or the other I like your program thank you and keep up a good job like you always do bye-bye
@@longtalltexanrc3358 Cheers sir, learn something every day 👍 - green petrol here in Scotland, black is diesel - I fly out the states tomorrow to do a road trip so maybe a good thing you've told me that 🤣, could have been awkward...
There is a line of these CJ10’s sitting at the airport here! Along with the special order Canadian military CJ7’s
We took a number of these to the desert in 1990 and ragged them out. Decided it wasn't worth cleaning them up to bring them home so just left them for the units that were replacing us. I went back in 1993 and a number of them were still going strong. Ugly they might be but they were goers.

What a cool jeep truck project. Bet he read your comment immediately and took it out for another spin lol

Yup, check the transfer case. You'll end up getting some speed out of it.

Just a little random piece of jeep history there. Thanks for sharing this one Dennis. Pretty cool.

This is going to be GREAT. Please post frequently on this build. Do want!
This Jeep CJ-10 is the perfect base for a rock crawler. Extend the wheel base, put a bed on the back, some bigger tyres, a roll cage inside...done.
that's badass dennis

love the cj10 a lot in europe as they were used on air bases here
I hated starting those Jeeps in the winter. Other than that, those little tugs were pretty fun!

Glow plugs?glow oh no? Nissan? holy grail? Holy plow!⚙️?🔧?! Military grade Torque ?
J20/J30 chassis with a stretched CJ8 body. Dana 60 front and Dana 70 rear. That would be a sweet trail rig. Would need 4:56, 39's, NV4500.
This Jeep would be great on a farm towing heavy trailers. Dennis should make a tow test in it.
Worked many years on an Air Force flightline. These were used to tow supporting ground equipment not actual aircraft, ok, maybe the teeny tiny trainers. Very strict speed limit on the flightline.
Already has on board air! That thing is mint.

Can't wait to see the future video's of this one
Very cool, can’t wait to see it being worked on !
i think military fan might have more interest if you clean it up and keep it stock

I have the same one . I look forward to watching the build
also the "bed" you speak of is covering a huge heavy weight that will also have to be removed
Dennis you got great vehicles there thanks.
Good ol quick trip. Wish we had them in Houston.

Please keep the 8 lug hubs. They are just a subtle hint of what a torque monster this vehicle is.

That is very cool. It will be a fantastic build platform
I remember seeing something like that years ago, but the ones I seen were 90s ram cabs with a stubby chassis like that.
I can't wait
Awesome brother keep up the awesome work you need your own Tv show people would watch it bigtime

So awesome 👍😁 I would love to have that beast! What a build that could be!!! Thanks for sharing it with us! Great episode man the jeeps you find one day I will buy one 👍😀🤤
They got a 208 transfer case locked in low
Waiting to see what you do with it. Will it get up to road speeds?
How many hours are on the engine, I'd bet a ton.
Bobtail warrior!

Who needs horse power all you need are 5.38 gears pull just about anything Can’t wait to see what you guys build from that GW
Think you had the tralior brakes on, why it was leaking air in the back. (If comeing from glad hands)
Buckle up Dennis

Can't wait to see what you do with that! TURBO! LOLOLOL
OMG...that's cool.
That's cool
Is a nice jeep, I like
Put a turbo on that beast. 😎
I used one of these at Torrejon AB, Spain to tow F-16 jets around.
That's badass!
Finally something Richard can drive without being scared. Lol
I bought one in Pensacola in 2002, didn't run, had big plans for it. Wanted to put the body on a CJ5 somehow, then it got stolen. Still mad about it, lol
I remember the first time I saw a CJ-10, it was parked in Edinburg, TX and all I could think was “Man! The front of that thing is WEIRD!”
That thing would climb up the side of Everest.
Dennis a friend of mine has a pick up Jeep like those but needs to be rescued it’s in McAllen Tx, south Texas let me know how can I send you pics of it ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Hook that up to the hellwagon and let's have us a proper pull off!
Very cool

Used to get coffee, oj, and powdered donuts at that QT
Chris Durham had a buggy with one of these grills
These had 4:88 gears with a 208 transfercase locked in low, top speed 25mph
What’s with the square headlights?
Are you in Oklahoma City Oklahoma I thought I recognized. On Cue but I'm not sure would you please tell me one way or the other I like your program thank you and keep up a good job like you always do bye-bye
Was Dennis suggesting that a bigger set of tires would make the CJ-10 go faster? If that was true, my CJ5 would be driving like a Ferrari. ;)
I got worried when you put fuel in. Here in the UK the green is unleaded and the black pump is diesel
Just the opposite here
do you do HMVEE conversions to H1 HUMMERS?
That thing must a shit ton of power..
Gears may by 7.17s
Where’d u find it I’d love to have this put a plow on it plow my driveway in winter tow my boat in the summer
When are you going to build a roxor with CJ components?
Joeys Cleaning Lady Why.?
put it on 40s for the 5.38s
Dennis, I'm still waiting on a ride in the new Ferrari kind sir!
Isn't a green pump petrol and the black pump diesel? Did you just put petrol in a diesel tank?
Colin J Campbell in the states, or at least in Texas, green is diesel and black is gasoline
@@longtalltexanrc3358 Cheers sir, learn something every day 👍 - green petrol here in Scotland, black is diesel - I fly out the states tomorrow to do a road trip so maybe a good thing you've told me that 🤣, could have been awkward...
Colin J Campbell Ha Ha! Enjoy your trip and fuel pump knowledge!
5:38 gears is the exact opposite of "tall" Hah.
Yup, lower is higher the number
Cool
What happened the coffee 🤷🏼♂️ for the walk
Not even so much as a toot of the horn while you fly into the mechanics bays ?
That air compressor is working its ass off
Needs an 8 or 6 speed transmission to get above 25.
Nope, take the transfer case out of low. It's got a bracket that's keeps the lever locked in low range.
I wish you would send me some TJ parts.
I thought they had 7.17 gears in them
Didn't know it was a thing. Turbo it lol
Those gears are not tall tall gears are highway gears those are very short gears or low geared if you will even though the numbers high
