Neil Blender may have invented the "Method" in '85, but Chris Roach was one of the OGs to tweek it tyte to progress its iconic style Damian, Kidwell, Monty, Palmer - all legends of the grab as well. Now XGAMES riders are blasting 45' out of the superpipe with crisp clean form Unbelievable! Thanks for the entertaining video. *ps - youre absolutely correct, you need to grab THEN bone it out. Backside hits ALL DAY!
I was originally thinking about calling roach and asking him some questions about it. I coached a butter clinic with him that inspired the “heel side approach” tip. But I felt like my interview skills are probably terrible and talked myself out of it because it seemed a bit too technical for my first video like this. But I’ll likely do a part two some day. Might need your help keeping track of the history because I started to dig into it and immediately overwhelmed myself haha
Love that you left where to grab up to interpretation. Even though you said to grab melon there are some shots where you grab in front of the binding. Both are "proper" methods IMO. Let's dig a little deeper. I find that grabbing in front allows a bigger stretch and feels better going massive whereas behind the binding is more compact and skate style which I prefer cruising side hits. Jamie Lynn's most iconic methods, known as northwest style, were between the bindings with the back arm punching forward to pet the beast, and the base at 90 degrees to the snow. Also he allegedly rode posi posi bindings early on, allowing the back knee to tuck in more easily. Nicolas Müller would grab in front of the binding, almost to the nose of the board and bend his whole body like macaroni, known as euro style, extending the back arm behind his neck allowing the base of his board to touch the sky. Everything between these two ideals falls onto the "proper" method spectrum and each rider will do it differently. As long as your back foot raises to the same height (or more) as your front foot. Back foot below front foot is a grasser(s/o Chris Roach). I think Slush Magazine ran an article in one of their early issues covering the different styles of method grab but I couldn't find it. Great trick tip you nailed the fundamentals of a great method and I will try the grab-then-tweak tip to improve my switch methods. Looking forward to your next videos! Crank that hog for me🤣
I want to do a part two someday when I get better at this! I originally had a lot more written for this, including a bit about the between vs outside binding debate. Had come to a conclusion that I think was a unique take.. but didn’t want to over complicate my first narrative video haha
@@antoinehxc stoked to hear it! That idea was more or less the inspiration for doing this. I had realized that I was occasionally doing this subconsciously and then was like “woah wait, has anyone ever addressed this?”
Is it still a method if you grab in front of your foot? Jamie Lynn always grabs behind his front foot. Either way, it looks terrible grabbing in front of your foot.
@@MVH198 I’m working on something for exactly that! I’m thinking of doing something like a “snowboarding skill tree” video next, then focus on fundamentals
That’s what I usually ride! I set the stance back a little bit and put my back foot at zero. Maybe that’s not for everyone though. Let’s see that method baby!!!
This is good tips, will try out the heel side approach, I've always been conscious about bending down, grabbing then twist. Lots of euro methods out there. what are your thoughts on not doing front hand between bindings but front hand on the outside of the binding (heel edge ofc) is both valid?
I had touched on this topic in the original script but it felt like it was a bit too much of a detour. Ultimate I boiled it down to “if you’re just learning methods, grab between the bindings, that way if you mess it up you can just pretend like you meant to do a melon, or even save it by poking another way. Once you’re confident with that, the four horsemen of the method-ocalypse will grant you the Devine right to extra leverage.. grabbing outside the binding” A bit of a long winded thought that required a long winded setup that ultimately didn’t feel like it fit in with the rest of the video. Stay tuned though I guess haha. Thanks for asking!! 🌹
@@cockpitsnow lots of pow yesterday - jumps covered in pow - took your guidance to my methods on the first runs through the jumpline. came in on heel side and grabbed between bindings - 'this is something else' - floating on pow streight into the flow of that method made my day. youre a wiz - thank you!
