I new Shlomo in the 70s from Temple Emanu-El in Miami when I was a kid, mom and I would go to Rabbi Labovitz’s house, he performed at temple and stayed for Shabbos. Sat at table with the Rabbi for many hours he was a gifted musician and performer, highly intelligent funny and a real humanist.

This year, Shemini Atzeret occurred on Saturday, October 7 - the very day the current middle eastern chaos began. Interestingly enough, this is exactly 50 years to the day after the breakout of the Yom Kippur War, with both instances catching most of the Israeli civilian populace completely off-guard (as they were celebrating a double religious holiday). “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.” Amidst all the opinions and disputed facts going around regarding the chaos in the middle east right now, one thing is for sure: we are seeing a massively successful ‘divide and conquer’ campaign. When interviewed by Dutch Television at this event, Nov. 1, 1973, Shlomo explained that Am Yisrael Chai is the striving for life and peace. He contrasted the chants at a rally he had attended before in San Francisco where Jews sang Am Yisrael Chai proclaiming life while pro Arab demonstrators asked for death - “to kill the Jews”. Shlomo concluded: I really felt the difference - we don’t want to kill anybody”.
