How to play 'I'm Broken' by Pantera Guitar Solo Lesson w/tabs

- Hi guys! Welcome to lesson 123 of Learn That Solo! Today we look at how to play the solo from 'I'm Broken' by Pantera.
Good ol' Dime! This solo is from the C# (and a 1/4 sharp) standard era. Once you're in tune, you're ready to make some serious testosterock. The second section and the final shred are the only ones I'd concern myself with as the rest are pretty manageable.
Section 2 tips:
Ideally for the pentatonic run in Section 2 you'd want to work on pulloffs and string changing as well as using the pinky to get those epic Dimebag stretches he loves so much. Your picking hand doesn't play too much of a role in this run.
Section 4 tips:
As for the final shred just hone in on alternate picking with a basic semi-quaver feel. The positions are basically chromatic with a slight gap here and there. The run itself sounds like a pentatonic with accidentals/'blue' notes but you could just as easily work on the speed and technique doing basic 4 finger chromatic exercisers and warm ups.

hey Chris, your lessons are great, it really helped me out with some songs (like Holy Wars) but in a couple of months i'm gonna peform on my school with my band and we decided to play "Peace Sells" by Megadeth.

Great lesson! Yeah it's hard to sound exactly like Dime on the some of this towards the end of the solo when one can't use a whammy. Great job!

a quarter step up is easy to get by doing this. Standard tuning is A 440hz. a quarter step up would be A 452.89. So just grab your tuner and change the A reference and then tuner your guitar from low to high C# F# B E G# C# and then you can play along perfectly with this song.

The flashy part in section 2. I have been playing for 17 years and i never learned that picking pattern...I always wind up ringing the lowermost string on licks like that. and it should be in every guitar player's arsenal....kan you elaborate on how that picking is done correctly?

btw these are quite advanced lesson anyone who is a beginner i suggest you check out justin sandercoe he has pretty good lessons for those of you who are out of your depth here.
You certainly did a great job with this lesson, so thank you , but I would suggest you to practice a lot your vibrato technique and do it from your wrist and wider.
I know this is old, but did you go back to the thumbnail playing or stick with the pick. A pick has always felt unnatural too me. Thought about growing my thumbnail. Any advice on this?

sorry, I'm a begginer. What do you mean with 1/4 tone sharp? Is it going to be a C tuned down 1/4? and the rest (B and E) standard? Thanks
it means that you tune the guitar to C# Standard (C#, F#, B, E, G#, C# low to high). then make to needle on your tuner half way between the note of the string and the next note up e.g. C# & D (this should be angled to the right on the tuner's screen)

Probably around a 4.5, not too difficult once you get your head around the picking pattern on in the middle section. Once you get your right hand to settle into the ascending 'groove' you've pretty much got it.
To play the solo right clean and on time without good vibrato and the correct phrasing and zero mistakes I'd say it's a 6.5 7

In the beginning of section 2, why would you pick the 17th fret of the 2nd string when it's the same as the 12th fret on the 1st string? It's much easier like that.

+yuval4597 there is also a different sound one can hear when picking it this way as apposed to just plucking the 12th twice. It's kind of hard to explain.

i dont under stand how the solo is in C# but the rest of the song is in D tuning? but im pretty sure the hole song is in D
its in halfway between D and C#. Set your tuner A4 frequency to 427.5 and tune to D and you have the record tunning!

not trying to bust balls, but the tabs at 6:51 says to hammer on to 13 from 12 on the 2nd string, and you actually pull off from 13 to 12. it just confused me a little from what you said to do then what i read.
