Super video Mike. Love the passage-of-time element. I'm a school teacher. Just finished my first 3 step unit off back of house! Biggest job I tackled yet. Couldn't have done it without your vids. Used a template, black paper…all the "Mike" tricks I could throw at it. Wife loves it. Faced with brick to match house and salvaged sandstone treads from neighbor on the cheap. Keep em' coming!
i am so glad i somehow ended up watching this video here but let me tell you ,now have a new faithful viewer here now ,i need to fix some cement front stairs and already feel more confident a bit more about starting my project ..great great and very informative thank you sir and bless you
Mike as you said I don't like going behind another mason either. But sometimes you have to. You are the Man thanks. Maybe some of the younger whipper snappers Will take over where we are done
We have the same problem here in East Tennessee contractors will wait to put the steps in last and they put the footer on fill dirt and than they blame the Mason (me) got the steps moving Great video keep up the good work
Hi Nathan, I usually edit it the same day I film it and then render it and put it away, and then bring it back up and edit again,, sometimes the jobs do not get finished 6 months or later waiting for other to do their part, but it gets there in time, I appreciate it. mike
Mike, that was a great repair! Someone, (the builder?), should have built them correctly the first time. Your masonry work proves you're a Master Craftsman! Thanks for the video. ....13
Hello sir what are those large stones called? I am a pipe fitter for over 20 years but do diy projects around my house to save money and I'm trying to find something like that as my mom and my wife's parents along with her grandmother come visit and I would like to add those steps to make it easier for the elderly, thank you and good work thank you for your knowledge
very informative Mike... a question...After your flat stones were laid and in place, you powercut gaps at the back junction to the risers. . BUT...wouldn't the cuts also allow rain and water entry back into the support? Not sure i'd leave the gaps open ... I might caulk them with a self leveler and try and keep the water and maybe deicers out of that area?
Hi pensive, I can't argue with you there, but I know being on two different footers it is going to crack and it is a cover up job, I don;t know how much longer the caulking would last, (6 in one hand half dozen in the other,) thanks mike
You handle those treads like they are feathers! Are you laying them in a dryer-than-usual mix? It seemed like the mortar didn't ooze that much while you muscled the treads into place. Do you typically make the mix dryer when laying big heavy treads?
Hi Matt, usually something that heavy is not going anywhere , and once they are locked in under and around they hold fast and if you have to get them up int the future they will not break up. , I hope it helps thanks mike
HI steve, it is just a wall that comes out of the main wall, like making an extra wall for a room or just a plain old extra wall to maybe hide something but sometimes for added support against push from an outside wall, I guess that is my best explanation, thanks mike
These videos are so useful and beneficial Mike, thanks:) Do you know any books or are you aware of any resources I could use to learn about masonry, building and construction? (I'm a full time student in a completely different field so I don't have time to study this ) Anyway thank you
You know your masonry is top notch, when he returns not once, but twice over a period of one year, to quality check him self. 《Children. What did we learn in school today?》 《M.H.S.O.H.K.》. :-)
Nice. However, I've got to comment on the lack of personal protective gear - no gloves, no dust mask. Cement is corrosive on the skin and harmful to the lungs.
All your stuff is old school and done the correct way in my opinion
Thanks Brian, Mike
You Sir have done more work in your videos than most people have done there whole lives. That's what keeps us young. Great work!
Hi Lee, I appreciate the comment, keeps me going thanks mike

Great video Mike. You should think of writing a book, if you haven't already. You are the Larry Haun of masonry.
Steven, no just passing along what I learned from others, thanks mike
I have done a lot of stone steps that's good work
thanks Ken, It is good for me to hear that from a pro, thanks mike
Good job mike, a 1 year time frame for one video is insane, how I'd you keep track if that footage
that is a great observation. I know keeping track of video can get tough. used to help my mom do weddings. another excellent video Mike!

Hi Rick, in our area we call them limestone threads, thanks mike
very informative Mike... a question...After your flat stones were laid and in place, you powercut gaps at the back junction to the risers. . BUT...wouldn't the cuts also allow rain and water entry back into the support?

I like the brick pivot for the slab. Overall came out very nice. Why the black paper on bottom?
Hi James, I lay the black paper on and the step right over it, then just cut it out and it does not dirty the sidewalk, I appreciate it. mike
Serves as a bond-break between the new step and the sidewalk. Allows the sidewalk to move (expand / contract) independently from the step.
@@MikeHaduck hi mike I'm building a step to doorway on concrete do I put the black paper on the concrete thwn brick

The limestone treads kook great, are they 16 or 18 inches front to back Are you riser
about 7 1/2 , Thanks mike.
Hi Greg, usually 12 or 14 inch depending and a average of 7 1/2, thanks mike
this guy makes it look to easy
Thanks, Mike
About how much do those step caps weigh?
Hi Jim, I am not sure, maybe 90 lbs? Mike
What's the purpose of the black paper?
Hi, not to get cement all over the sidewalk. Thanks, Mike
Hey Mike, would you estimate masonry steps job in Pocono pa?
Hi Ken, I am actually living in Florida, I got a years worth of videos I been showing, so retired now, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thank you for reply! Enjoy! Great videos!

You didn't even wet the steps , Mike
Hi Shawn, not all the tme , depends on the project, thanks, mike
Nice. However, I've got to comment on the lack of personal protective gear - no gloves, no dust mask. Cement is corrosive on the skin and harmful to the lungs.

Guys just dont do this caliber and quality work now a day. Talk about attention to detail. Old school!
