- 1994- JOSH MULCOY, JOSH LOYA, JUSTIN POSTON, COLIN SMITH, DAN KENNEDY AND FRIENDS SURFING ALL TIME COSTA RICA: GUANACASTE, OLLIE'S POINT, PAVONES, SALSA BRAVA.
GUANACASTE HAD BEEN SURFED IN THE 70'S AND 80'S, BUT IN THE EARLY NINETYS, THE BEST BREAKS WERE STILL EMPTY AND RELATIVELY (AS COMPARED TO TODAY) UNDISCOVERED. ALSO AT OLLIES, PAVONES, SALSA BRAVA... WE CAMPED EVERYWHERE AND THE LINEUPS WERE EMPTY EVERYWHERE WE WENT. IT WAS A GLORIOUS TIME.
Besides producing this video part for the surf movie "Above And Beyond" • TR PRODUCTIONS "ABOVE ... I also got the cover of Surfing magazine and a 15 page artice entitled "Guess Where". Due to an agreement I had with the magazine not even the country name was published. This was before Surfline, surf maps and not naming spots was the order of the day. As the years went by the name of the break was still not printed for another decade due to respect for our agreement. Once the internet was invented all bets were off and most every spot and location became publicized.

Thanks for sharing. Brings back nostalgic memories. Been Coming to CR since late 80's, now I have over 20 years living here. Some of the best times were in the 90's when the boys Jay Miller, John Logan (RIP), Brad Hersh, Newell brothers, myself and a few others were holding it down in Playa Grande. The secret playground back then was Junquillal, and I guess Marbella. Some epic trips to Witches and Ollies with a stop at Secrets/Labrynth on the way, and an occasional Bat Island score. Never forget watching Logan absolutely destroy solid 8 foot Secrets while I was shitting myself on the shoulder. Miss those times, CR is not the same now. Pura Vida Tony.

Cool to see those names of some homies. I took Miller there his first time and when we saw the “coming soon” sign for Ranch Colinas I told him he should come back and get a job there. Of course that’s exactly what he did Logie and the boys followed! Good years for sure
@@Heavymetalhettel Yes he did. I remember being out on a bulldozer with Miller when they were shaping the course. Watching it be built. Then playing rounds of golf with Jay, Parlee, Logie, and the boys with no one else in sight. Of course direct access to Avellanes was icing on the cake. Yes those were the best years in my opinion.

Yeah TR that's where I first met you, Mulcoy and the crew staying at Wayne's Mono Congo Lodge playa Negra. YEW. We totally scored that summer I spent nearly 2 months down there that trip was amazing time for sure. Hope to see you again soon down in Nica. Keep up the amazing surf history videos so rad !!!!!!!!!!!

Yes for sure back in the day.. Negra was so fun and not even crowded at all. My first trip was 1991 and nobody there. NOBODY and was pumping.
