  • This past weekend I went out the railway for the first time this year, mostly to just check on things and see how much damage there was from the winter storms. Very few branches had come down and no serious track issues were noted, I managed to take a full ride around the line in the steeple cab and only de-wired twice which is good for a 1st run of the year. Apologies in advance for the wind noise, it was gusting over 40 MPH on this day so it was hard to shield from that. Enjoy a full ride in this video while I clear the branches and inspect the track!

    Reminds me of when I was a train operator in Dallas for DART. I was the 1st train to leave the yard going North to N. Carrollton/Frankford Sta and since I was the 1st train, I was tasked with doing an inspection of both track & OCS. If any problems or defects were spotted I was to report them to train control. Speed was limited to 45MPH, which we called "Sweep Speed". Actual posted & ATP speeds were as high at 65mph. Love the channel & videos!!

    Great video. I like your little speeder. Love to see more details on its construction. Also have an idea after watching your video.
    Take your speeder, add a leaf blower or two and mount them to your speeder. Then you can blow the leafs off your tracks as you travel along.
    Just an idea

      Here is another one for you… if you get lots of snow.
      Put a set of railroad wheels on a snowblower and sent it down the line. In the summer and fall, replace the auger with a brush and sweep your tracks clean.
      Yea, I tend to think a lot.

    I love all the little bridges and embankments. There were even a couple little stops or "depots". Can't quite figure out how the little engine connects to the wires overhead. The wires seem to go every which way and dip considerably between the poles. VERY enjoyable!

      He shows that in in this other video by him: ruclips.net/video/uG67Iqb9b0c/видео.html
      At 23:02 he starts talking about the pickup shoe and trolly pole that connects the engine to the overhead wire. Where you've seen the wire sag more than a hand width, he had to stop and make repairs because tree branches fell on it and snapped the lateral tensioning wires.

    I would guess the 1st order of business is to "pest-proof" the car barn/shop. Would have liked to have seen/explanation of the electrical power source and the details of that. With the distances of the railroad, there has to be some power issues to overcome. Definitely a very unique operation, one that I've never seen before (in miniature railroads). Very impressive and I'd like to see more, . . . .

    Regarding the tree that limits the train you showed in an earlier video. Why not just turn the tree into a pole and save yourself some work? Chop it off high enough to reattach the wire support. Then using your chainsaw remove most of the encroaching front of the tree, cover the remainder in bitumen to slow the rotting and reattach your power line. Might last a few years.

    A very impressive achievement and great to see the cab view as you travel around. Thanks for this. As a 7-1/4 steam guy, I have some idea of what you're up against (on a smaller scale) and have one question - do you increase the coning of your wheels to accommodate those very tight curves?

    • @CNW4145
      @CNW4145  10 месяцев назад

      The wheels are barely coned at all, which is why it makes noise around the curves. There isnt really enough meat on them to do a proper taper.

    Excellent video! Must be great to have your own railroad. I'm very interested to hear more details about its history and about its electrical details. What is the size of the electric motors on the locos? Have you had any problems with maintaining good electrical connections on rail joints? With operation at only 120 volts it doesn't seem like you can afford too much voltage drop. Please keep the videos and narrative coming - I find it fascinating.

      I honestly have no idea, this stuff has been acquired and built over a period of nearly 75 years so tracking the cost would be a bit difficult!

      Yes, rail this size goes for $3 per foot to $7 per foot and there is over 8000 feet of rail. Ties are about $2 each if you get lumber on sale and there are about 4000 ties, each tie has $1 worth of fasteners, so that all adds up pretty quick. Thats just the track lol
