Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in "Hungry Hobos" (1928)

- This short was taken from the special features of the latest release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Hungry Hoboes (alternate spelling: Hungry Hobos) is a silent animated short released by Universal studios in 1928. The short features Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Peg Leg Pete as the title characters, who hop trains in search of food.
Having been lost since before World War II, the short was rediscovered in 2011 in the Huntley Film Archives, and was later purchased by the Walt Disney Company for $31,250. It was then restored in a year-long digital restoration. Hungry Hoboes re-debuted in at the Telluride Film Festival, on September 2, 2012, as part of a special animation shorts program presented by leading film historian and restoration expert Serge Bromberg. - Кино
It’s amazing how back then the makers of these cartoons didn’t even need a voice actors (I don’t think it was possible back then) I can still perfectly when the characters mean by the way they move
Many years ago, I saw an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film festival at the ornate Castro theater here in SF. The sound effects were improvised by a family of three using only their voices while standing on the stage and watching the cartoons.
Back then, they couldn't use voice actors anyway
yeah
😀😃😄😁😆☺🤩🥰😟🙁☹😮😯😲😩
@@CaptainCat101because voice acting wasn't a thing back then.
Moral of the story....do not travel with Pete!

@@Antoxdtoonsoficial Pete/ Pedro es un cochino >:(
Thank you for uploading this. These Disney Oswald's are the holy grail of cartoon geeks and this shows their reputation was deserved.
I like how when Pete first spots the Sheriff, his hat jumps off his head in shock-and lands back on his head upside down, presumably because rightside up would be too ordinary. Even the details are imaginative.
The American Storyteller also they are pretty damn funny
Restless central Oh indeed. This one is a real laugh riot filled with wild imagination and hilarious gags.
The American Storyteller most definitely
biryanifan Ha I like that too
It''s kinda funny and gives agony the fact that Pete's litteraly abusing Oswald
I can't get over how clean and clear this looks and sounds! What a restoration!
This was originally released as a silent film, the soundtrack was added for a modern experience
Creating these films was so labor-intensive, I'm always amazed to find so much excess movements that had to be animated. It seems like, in the planning stages, during the storyboarding process, that alot of suggestions would've been discarded due to time-pressures, & added drawing burdens, not to mention cost of materials. I'm also amazed at the general smoothness of the animation already achieved in these early efforts. I've also noticed some interesting effects, too, like the oscillating, bouncy rr tracks, vibrations in character-movements, the quickness of the passing background while the train is moving, etc. Also amazing to realize that many of the characters in these early Disney shorts resemble Mickey Mouse, well before Walt created, & Ub, designed him. Oswald basically IS MM, only the ears are different. Pegleg Pete's face essentially looks like M, as well!
Wow i read your description. This cartoon is worth $31000. Insane!
Unlike Mickey and Minnie, Oswald and Ortensia actually got married and had kids.
What makes you think that Oswald and Ortensia can get married and have children/kids, but Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse can't??
Morty and Ferdie were not Mickey's "nephews"; they were his bastard kids with Minnie.
@@marcosmith2501 no they weren't
PROOF THAT OSWALD IS BETTER THAN MICKEY
@@sth5697 I don't how that makes Oswald "better" but that might be just me
Just once I wish Disney would put out a short where Oswald and Mickey star together
Yeah, that would be nice. That way, we could see how they would team up in a certain scenario.
Thank you for finding this short and uploading it to RUclips
Ok I laughed when Oswald became monke but
I was feeling so bad for those animals. They did nothing wrong, just stand right there until some guys put them into a box without warning
even more funny this monke looks like bosko the talk-ink kid a character created by rudolph ising and hugh harman in 1929 to become in 1930 the star of looney tunes warner bros cartoons
One does wonder if Friz Freleng, Hugh Harman or Rudolph Ising did the animation for that bit. Since all 3 would leave Disney that year and would have an huge role in creating the Looney Tunes a short time later.
If this short was made today all would be screaming about "Animal Cruelty" XD
Depends on if it's a cartoon made for kids or adults.
Maybe times have changed (I don't watch the idiot box much these days) but I remember lots of weird/cruel jokes with Gary the snail from "Spongebob" or Courage from "Courage the Cowardly Dog" that didn't bother me, and the latter was the main character who was emotionally abused constantly by his owner!
Fayez Fawzi even though the main characters are animals?
Fayez Fawzi this forgotten Oswald?
Walt would have already passed away if this short was made today.
Actually Oswald is the lucky rabbit and Petw or whatever that is is a wolf
Oswald is no longer suicidal because he is remembered.
I also downloaded this video because one, so more uploads of this video can exist and two, because this is the only perfect upload of the full cartoon, the others were a person recording it on bandicam and the other was recorded with an IPad, but did credit you on the description of my upload of Hungry Hobos.
I wouldn't watch this on RUclips if Disney just released this short ( along with all the other Oswald shorts ) on blu ray.
Oswald is the best. I love the shorts
So do I!
Is it just me or does Oswald have more personality and he is better and more charming then mickey
He really is.
being a fan of oswald mickey and julius i can tell you that mickey had a more daring and mischievous attitude to the point that he would defend himself with fists or he was the headache for pete only the parents said that it was inappropriate that mickey could not get angry hit ect.. that's why donatl and goofy were created to express the emotions that he could no longer show.

Assuming the short itself is still under copyright then like a certain mouse in January every one of the remaining original Disney Oswald shorts since this one was released in 1928, would also enter public domain. Plus the first batch of the post Disney Oswald shorts.
I hope we see an influx of Oswald amateur animations on RUclips. 😊
Fast forward to now and every original Disney Oswald shorts are in the public domain.

This got me thinking... He is clearly presented as a cat in all Pete featuring cartoons made after 1999 but what kind of animal is he before that?
In the Alice Comedies and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit shorts, he's depicted as a bear. In Mickey Mouse shorts, he's a cat.

Universal made this cartoon. It's not Disney.
Walt made it and Universal published it
Universal was the distributor but they didn't have their own animation studio. That's where Walt Disney and his studio came in. Same deal with Walter Lantz he had the animation studio, not Universal. Universal never owned the animation studio til years after Lantz closed it and sold the filmography to them. Another example was Warner Bros during the Harman Ising and Schesinger eras. Warner only distributed those shorts but until Schesinger sold the studio to them, they never owned the animation studio prior to the deal. Plus Harman and Ising were independent at the time.

Hay does any one else wonder why Oswald was replaced
It was because someone bought the rights to use him, so Walt had to come up with a new character that Ub Iwerks would eventually create.
Mr.MickeyMario the owner of Felix took Oswald when Walt Disney left. The company owned the right to Oswald not Walt Disney
