It’s amazing how back then the makers of these cartoons didn’t even need a voice actors (I don’t think it was possible back then) I can still perfectly when the characters mean by the way they move
Many years ago, I saw an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film festival at the ornate Castro theater here in SF. The sound effects were improvised by a family of three using only their voices while standing on the stage and watching the cartoons.
I like how when Pete first spots the Sheriff, his hat jumps off his head in shock-and lands back on his head upside down, presumably because rightside up would be too ordinary. Even the details are imaginative.
Creating these films was so labor-intensive, I'm always amazed to find so much excess movements that had to be animated. It seems like, in the planning stages, during the storyboarding process, that alot of suggestions would've been discarded due to time-pressures, & added drawing burdens, not to mention cost of materials. I'm also amazed at the general smoothness of the animation already achieved in these early efforts. I've also noticed some interesting effects, too, like the oscillating, bouncy rr tracks, vibrations in character-movements, the quickness of the passing background while the train is moving, etc. Also amazing to realize that many of the characters in these early Disney shorts resemble Mickey Mouse, well before Walt created, & Ub, designed him. Oswald basically IS MM, only the ears are different. Pegleg Pete's face essentially looks like M, as well!
Depends on if it's a cartoon made for kids or adults. Maybe times have changed (I don't watch the idiot box much these days) but I remember lots of weird/cruel jokes with Gary the snail from "Spongebob" or Courage from "Courage the Cowardly Dog" that didn't bother me, and the latter was the main character who was emotionally abused constantly by his owner!
being a fan of oswald mickey and julius i can tell you that mickey had a more daring and mischievous attitude to the point that he would defend himself with fists or he was the headache for pete only the parents said that it was inappropriate that mickey could not get angry hit ect.. that's why donatl and goofy were created to express the emotions that he could no longer show.

Ok I laughed when Oswald became monke but I was feeling so bad for those animals. They did nothing wrong, just stand right there until some guys put them into a box without warning
even more funny this monke looks like bosko the talk-ink kid a character created by rudolph ising and hugh harman in 1929 to become in 1930 the star of looney tunes warner bros cartoons
One does wonder if Friz Freleng, Hugh Harman or Rudolph Ising did the animation for that bit. Since all 3 would leave Disney that year and would have an huge role in creating the Looney Tunes a short time later.
Assuming the short itself is still under copyright then like a certain mouse in January every one of the remaining original Disney Oswald shorts since this one was released in 1928, would also enter public domain. Plus the first batch of the post Disney Oswald shorts.
I remember i once was watching Disney Channel and an ad of Oswald and Mickey was showed on screen, at first i was confused on who the rabbit was, years later i found out who he is, pretty character for sure
Universal was the distributor but they didn't have their own animation studio. That's where Walt Disney and his studio came in. Same deal with Walter Lantz he had the animation studio, not Universal. Universal never owned the animation studio til years after Lantz closed it and sold the filmography to them. Another example was Warner Bros during the Harman Ising and Schesinger eras. Warner only distributed those shorts but until Schesinger sold the studio to them, they never owned the animation studio prior to the deal. Plus Harman and Ising were independent at the time.

Just once I wish Disney would put out a short where Oswald and Mickey star together
Yeah, that would be nice. That way, we could see how they would team up in a certain scenario.
I guess we kinda got something similar in the epic Mickey cutscenes though when they interacted 🤷♀️ it’s what we have for now
Glad now that they're Public Domain, we don't even have to depend on Disney.

I Have To Admit Its Very Good Old 1927 Short
Wow i read your description. This cartoon is worth $31000. Insane!
Unlike Mickey and Minnie, Oswald and Ortensia actually got married and had kids.

I wouldn't watch this on RUclips if Disney just released this short ( along with all the other Oswald shorts ) on blu ray.
Pretty rough, but the gags are really well worked out and build into one another extremely well. Disney was already the best story man in animation.
