In this video, we're going to talk about the fear of yo-yo decluttering. We'll explore the reasons why it's so hard to declutter and the strategies you can use to overcome your fear of decluttering and recluttering.
Specifically, I dig into my journal supply stash and how I recluttered this category.

I realized I don't have to be a curator of the history of an American housewife. I have been collecting things off of Freecycle or the thrift that were older womens' crafting supplies, cookie cutter collections, cookbooks, vintage fabrics or clothes that didn't fit, etc. My mantra has become "I am not the Smithsonian: I do not get taxpayer money to house all the Americana.
Bless 😅
I'll take it. I love all things vintage. My thing is one thing in two go out. So I'll get rid of half of everything I have left and gladly curate all your Americana!
Mantra: If I forget I own it, I clearly don't need it.
Side note- I'm loving your look in this video. You are beautiful, Erica.
Thank you!
I guess it looks on the outside like you've re-cluttered your journaling supplies but to me you look like you've refined your hobby (journaling) and combined it with something else you love (bible study). That basket isn't full of lots of different types of empty journals to try out like it used to be, it's full of bible study aides and supplies for a specific purpose.
It's kind of like what I've been going through over the last little while with my art supplies. When you start out there's so many options and you want to try everything, pastels, pencil, inks, acrylic, watercolor, oil, printing and everything else but as you grow and learn about your art you find that you really don't enjoy some mediums. I prefer acrylics and watercolors to oils because of their faster drying and the way the watercolor moves on the paper. I find pastels mucky but love working in pencil and ink. So as I've learned I've decluttered the things I don't like and won't use. The same goes for watercolor papers and journals. Once you've tried a few different ones you soon have your favorites for working in the different mediums and the rest you pass along to someone else to try out, but you have to progress through that messy time of too much stuff to get to your favorites, because for example, sticking to one paper type right from go, and it not being a good paper for your art, will hinder your growth and make creating unenjoyable. We have to give ourselves space to learn and grow.
My auntie said “Eliminate and concentrate.” Creative people see possibilities in everything and that can stop us from focusing and following through.
My mantra: I am moving across the country to where my grandchildren live, with a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack. I am NOT, at least at this time. But, I am slowly preparing for that anyway. 😉 My mantra used to be: I’m selling the house and it needs to be ready for viewings. I was not planning to sell. I guess I just have a good imagination.
Thats a good way to do it. I am in trouble then.
I often feel that if we don't declutter that initial thing that's overwhelming (books, craft supplies, journal supplies, kitchen tools, whatever), we can never get to a place where we can find out what really sparks passion, and have the mental and physical energy to lean into it. Sure, you could have kept that stuff "just in case," but if you had maybe it would have continued to drag on you and you never would have been able to do the thing that you're doing now that brings you so much joy.
Your hair looks Ah-Mazing! Go curly girl!
One of my decluttering mantras is: If it’s not a heck yes, it’s a heck no. It usually works well for me when I am going back and forth about whether to keep something.
mine
Limitations breed creativity. I think it was good of you to let all the previous journaling items go. It allowed you to get a fresh perspective and zero in on what you really wanted to bring back into your life.
A gentle minimalish question: when did began to believe you needed stickers and vellum to effectively journal? All that's really needed is a thing to make a mark and a thing to make a mark on...a pen and paper. Anybody can draw the simple designs found on stickers. Your drawn "stickers" will get better and better if you draw one every day. It's kind of a meditative three minutes during your journaling time and you will always have the perfect sticker.
I went through a similar journaling supplies journey as you. Soooo many nice journals given away! (At least you haven't gotten to the expensive fountain pens and inks stage yet.) I now journal in 25c. composition books with a ballpoint. The freedom from the burden of all those supplies is AMAZING!
And I think it must be much easier to release them when the time comes. They have accomplished what they were meant to.
Well.. she didn’t say she ‘needs’ those items, but that this is bringing her happiness, and helping her recultivate a good habit. She could well yo-yo again and decide she doesn’t want the extras 🤷🏻♀️
My mantra is, "If it's not a hard yes, it's a hard no." -the Minimal Mom
I am finally getting rid of scrapbook supplies that I have not used for 10 years. I am feeling so free as I donate them. If I return to the hobby I will do it differently anyway.
I don't remember if it was Joshua Becker who said it or if I just came across it after finding him but one "mantra" I try to go back to over and over again is Love people, use things because the opposite doesn't work. It helps me remember my priority is people and the things in my house are meant to be used.
That's a good mantra. Love that one. It's from the Minimalists and you can put it as wallpaper on your phone for free if interested. I used to have this at the beginning of my journey to declutter
@@katesimonet1154 the Minimalists, thanks! I'm glad to give credit where it is due.
I heard it from Joshua but so many of these quotes are floating around. I had forgotten so I appreciate the reminder. My favorite quote I heard from Erica, “I seek not to get more done but to have less to do.”
@@bananaanna1373 I remember her saying that and thinking "yes! Me too!" That one is so good!
👍 to mantras "My home is not a storage shed" also, "I don't need to improve on what works" and "I can like it without buying it"
My mantra is "like with like". I only keep any paperwork in one place in my house, I have a baking center in my kitchen with food items, baking pans etc. My craft room is in zones with sewing, yarn and paper crafts. It makes it easier to find things and to see when you are starting to have too much. When I lived in a big house I kept cleaning supplies in all three bathrooms, the kitchen and the laundry room. Now I have a cleaning cart on wheels and I move it around. I wish I would have had that in the big house.
My mantra... While in a store like Michael’s, “Realistically, I will not use this craft item. I will come back when I have a firm plan and buy it.”❤
Who can use this? Asked my sister if her grown kids want the pics I got thru the years…yes! I am using up my colored paper writing pads to write to my nephew who needs help with his reading…I have to remember to print! Using up holiday cards bought and forgot to send or leftovers thru the years instead of buying a new box with all the same greeting. Donate clothes since losing weight. Cookbooks and magazines and books to laundromat. Throw out things if not good enough to give away. Donate old towels and blankets to animal shelter. My son and his girlfriend needed things for their house they bought…my extra set of silverware, extra dishes, etc. I can always replace but in a pretty good place right now. I have just what I need right now. Use it or lose it. Keep a running list of what you need. Shop with the list and think before you buy do I really need it. Love your videos❤
Yes I would enjoy a decluttering mantra video. Personally I like the saying "If in doubt...throw it out!" Of course I don't throw much away. We sell or donate instead.
Your best video!❤❤❤. Your words hit home, the way you talk through the psychology of guilt and change is PHENOMENAL. Please repeat this method in future videos, maybe others are slow learners like me. I am moving soon and plans went from renting a Uhaul to only taking what I can’t live without. Your channel is a joy, I’m so thankful Minimal Mom Dawn recommended your channel. ❤
Hi Erica
I asked the Lord for a word for the year and some time ago i got the word ENOUGH
God is enough
I am enough
I have enough
Enough is enough
That word transformed me so much, if i wanted to buy something i would ask myself have i enough, and if the answer was yes, i would put that item back. What is so freeing is, i walked away content and thats so good. Having done that for a year it set some good boundaries for me, i still ask myself have i enough, it really helped me to stop buying unnecessary silly purchases that over time accumulate, and waste my money, and dragging it home to eventually donate and create that cycle all over again. I just have to take back that control. Hope this is helpful xxxxx Love the bible journalling very encouraging.
I have several mantras. I use the one that fits when I need it. My main one: "I don't want to dust it or the box it's stored in." That reminds me that I don't want things sitting around, collecting dust, because I won't dust things or move things to dust the surface. And it also reminds me that if I keep the thing and store it in a box or a bin, I'll have to dust that bin. I won't dust the bin, so that means a dusty surface. So if I keep it, it has to be "dustworthy". It has to be worth my time and energy to dust. If I love it enough to keep it, I will give it the love it needs. I will dust it. I'm still working on my first major purge, but this has helped me let go of many things.
Because you decluttered this category last year, you were able to reignite your love of journaling. It absolutely makes sense! Enjoy it, yo-yo and all 🥰
I like Dana’s “where would I look for it?” And I also love “ to have more than we need is greed”.
I’m doing my first no-buy year. (Yes I still buy things but I set rules for what I’m allowed and not.) I started this challenge as a way of not re-cluttering my space. My ultimate goal is to be more minimal. Also I wanted better spending habits for better financial stability. So far I’m seeing huge benefits to my no-buy year challenge. And I’m planning to make it a no-buy lifestyle.
When you said that your Grandmother would say "It's just stuff" That actually is and has been my mantra. Puts the things in it's place to let go of the emotions. I understand what you're saying I just recently added some things in the house on the walls in the office and my thought was 'Oh no I don't want to go back!" but my mindset has changed to being more thoughtful with the things I bring in. Before I had a ton of journals as well, looking for the "perfect" one and wastefully spending money. Now I only have one planner, one journal that works for me and I am thrilled. Keeping things limited in a container or space I think is THE game changer. Great video! So happy you are back in the God's word and also doing what you enjoy and are good at. You have a gift for journaling :)
A mindset shift has to come with it and love that you see that for your things!
I have really struggled with my yo-yo re-cluttering of books. I decluttered SO MANY boxes of books over the last few moves (12+ years) and through beginning my simplifying process. But, recently I have been collecting books again. I tend to get down on myself for this re-cluttering, but I'm realizing that this, too, is growth. When I decluttered all of those books, I was in a season of needing less - less stuff, less to do/read, less pressure on myself. My kids were small; I didn't have the energy to read more than the few favorites I kept to read again and again. My kids were small; I didn't have the energy to constantly clean up their books, and they preferred if I read the same ones over and over again anyway. Since 2020, when my oldest started elementary school, we have been homeschooling. We have collected reference books and beginning readers, along with books our library didn't have that helped enhance our learning in a unit study or specific area of learning. And we have collected a lot of new curriculum books, trying to figure out our learning styles, teaching style, homeschool style. I also started making reading a priority again as I had the energy for it, and as I realized how much digital time in the evening disrupts my the quality of my sleep. I'm realizing that this is a process; constantly redefining boundaries for those books that add value, rearranging and donating as we learn what works and what doesn't for us. I need to give myself grace to walk through the process and not feel like this is a failure, but an opportunity for growth, learning to set boundaries, getting to know myself and my kids better and leaning into our preferences and values to cultivate a book collection that helps us thrive. And, remember to check the library before I do anything else!
these mantras are So interesting. There are ones that deal with financial considerations, physical or mental bandwith, life simplification, ideals, focus, goals, etc. I need to reread and see if there are some for sentimental items? There are questions, declarations, and ideas that "woo" you to the next level. Some are quite comforting, some are in your face (haha). We need different things at different times (same onion, different layer). Some mantras could even be for taking a breath, whether for life events, self reflection, or celebration.
I wish these were little posters that I could pin up or put on a whiteboard, one at a time, to consider as I moved about my day. If I were a adult coloring book person, a "blank" saying would be fun too. I'm not a journal person or a coloring person BUT I love the power of words and ideas so a little focused 9x12 poster would be cool for me.
“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
- William Morris
Do I use it?
Do I love it?
♥️
So relatable, especially for this time of year, when I am looking at buying planners and supplies for next year. The amount of choice is overwhelming, but ironically what helped me is going to Michaels and Jo-Ann and seeing how junky and disheveled the stores in my area are (due to lack of staff). And I stand there in the planner aisle and think, I do not want to bring this mess into my life! 😃
I was at Hobby Lobby and someone (husband) had spelled HELP ME with the wooden letters.
@@poodlegirl55 I was just in there yesterday looking for a photo storage box. I left quickly as there was so much stuff in there I could barely move. They had numerous palettes full of Christmas stuff that were still shrink wrapped in every open isle. It was a disaster 😅
My mantras: Do you use it? What value does it bring to your life? You love people and animals, you use stuff.
Interesting topic, Erika! My “mantra” would be something like “Adjust the budget! Adjust the budget!” 😂😂😂. I am pretty obsessed with budgeting and fine tuning our planned expenses. When we declutter an area of our life, my husband and I sit down to make sure our budget supports our decisions into the future. That way, recluttering becomes a bit more difficult. Obviously, children’s clothing needs to be replaced when they outgrow it. But if we declutter an abundance of dinnerware, the budget will stop us from buying a different style, to be decluttered again, down the road.
You are looking especially lovely today, Erica. I would love to hear your take on a mantra video. One item in, one item out is always a good one.
thank you!
My mantra is: Sorry, I need the space for living!
wow I love that!
Great to recognize something you love doing. I think we risk decluttering things that we would love to do, but because we have no time due to the larger cluttering mess, we get rid of it. Purging and rediscovering a love of something in another season of life is okay! My mantra is if I have room for it and I look around and enjoy my rooms with certain decorations, gadgets, furniture, crafts, books etc., then it stays. I don’t need to be a stark minimalist, I like a warm welcoming home where I can do the things I love….spending time with family, reading, doing a craft without guilt because my house isn’t holding clutter or things that don’t bring me joy.
YES!!!! My mom and I recently went through this. We have been decluttering our craft supplies and then we decided we wanted to start making junk journals. I kept saying if only we had kept ....... but we had no idea we were going to junk journal. It has been fun to collect supplies for this specific project. It has taken us to antique shops and really got our creative juices flowing. I agree with you, I don't think this would have been as much fun if we had not let that other stuff go.
I make junk journals and it was a great way to declutter my craft room. Oh the stuff I used up!!!
What is a junk journal?
@@janicesosh8643 You can use any sort of base such as a cereal box or scrapbook paper. Then you add whatever you want on the inside. Type it in here on RUclips and you will see lots of ideas!
And! I think anything that encourages you to spend time in the Word is worth it :)
Amen!
Love this video. You are using and loving everything you bought, so in my opinion you didn't reclutter. You bought some supplies so you can do what you love to do. ❤️ My mantra: would I buy this item right now, if not, out it goes. Yes to a mantra video. Love from the Netherlands.
So GLAD to hear you are back in His Word! I too had been leaving it out of my daily routine, but this past year have actually read through the entire Bible, with a program that helps you to read through the Bible in a year, chronologically. Why do we ever "stop" reading it??? Everything we ever need to know or help us in our lives is found there...God is good!!!
It felt like coming home to pick it up again.
I'm 34yrs old bible is 🗝️ for our lives
It's not a mantra but it's the concept of purposefully "curating" a collection of the things that are most important to you. When we're letting go of clutter to make more space in our lives, we don't always know what that next season of life will look like. I'm trying to be more purposeful about what I select for my hobbies and I think you're doing the same thing. BTW, I saw you declutter your journals the first time and I was anxious for you! They're so addictive!
I try to declutter to the point where home life is simple and not complicated. Different season of life will come up and will look different each season. Also eventually want to move so to have a easier process for any potential move in the future.
I've been using the 5 minute decluttering trick. So, I repeat to myself it's only 5 minutes..let's go. Then I start. 5 minutes is so easy, it usually goes into another 5 minutes and so on. I also hear your voice in my head. Stop the financial guilt. Especially with clothing. And I haven't bought anything without purpose since I started watching your videos.
I have a Bible basket too😍💚
Yes to a mantra video! I have a variety of mantras depending on the area of my house/my mood/etc but I’m getting to the point where I’m less needing to purge and more trying to play defense as new things come in the house.
We are at the beginning of our family life with 1 toddler (first grandchild on both sides and we get a crazy amount of gifts) so for kid things I tell myself “we already have more than we need, and gifts from others will likely fill the gaps”. My general mantra is “I don’t use it, I won’t miss it” or “I have other ones, I won’t miss it” and I try to apply the $20 replacement rule when I’m having a hard time. I know I am privileged to be able to think/act this way, but I try not to let guilt/feeling of wastefulness get in the way of getting towards the simple life I dream of.
I had to pause after the entro to write this. I never thought of it this way but it sure has the same emotional effect as yoyo diet! I feel frustrated with myself why after taking strides forward I am back having excess clothes and toys...
Clean like the Queen is coming for tea.
This is exactly me! I have no problem in other areas of my possessions (skincare, sewing supplies), but with my journaling and stationary supplies, I accumulated AGAIN. Thanks for the permission of recluttering a hobby that I enjoy the most and the motivation to go through my supplies and declutter again.
I love my journaling 'stuff' but you hit upon a key in keeping it contained to only what you love & use.
I like Dana K White’s mantra: space for people not things
Mantra: (Abraham Hicks)"'things that you love in life, keep telling that story". Love your channel and content very much indeed. YOU are amazing!🌺🌺🌺
You are glowing with confidence 🤗 I really enjoy your channel. Thank you.
thanks!
I remember that original video so vividly! One of my favorites!
My mantra/thought is I don’t want my daughters to have to go through all this stuff when I die. I think that would be so rude! And the more I get rid of, the better I feel!
Late respons, just catching up. My declutter mantra: If you care for it, you care for it. Meaning: if you're able to store it (instead of tossing it on the floor where it could get damaged) and clean it (without sighing), you are able and willing to care for it. If that's the case: hold on to it. If it's not the case: start thinking of letting it go, knowing that part of you already has. This mantra created a break through for me and eliminated all physical clutter for me.
Yes, the container is the limit. That is a valuable lesson I have learned these past couple of years.
5I love your channel and following your journey. You have an adorable family. Seasons in our life come and go.
I think you would enjoy the book " The Coffee Self-Talk" by Kristen Helmstetter. I have been using it for two years now and it has really helped me to set my tone for the day and help guide my life path with affirmations that I select. I know you are a coffee drinker, so it ties to setting up your mantra's before tackling a big task. Putting your mind game on and reflection a bit before hand. Something I have been working with is " What limit do I want for myself?" . That helps me to declutter and make comfortable decisions with my items.
With the many, many, many times I have decluttered over the years I have completely released the guilt of "I spent money on that again...." because each time I have released the stuff that has turned into clutter for me it has enabled me to be able to bless other people and bring them so much delight!!!!! It's like I am pre-shopping for others I am not even yet aware they are in need of what I have. ❤😊❤ Hope that makes sense.
I love Bible study! I have really bad ADHD so I can’t journal. I make an epic mess. I have a big Bible, set of neutral colored zebra highlighters and a really nice 0.5mm pencil. I highlight my favorite verses and write notes in the margins. I have an app called E-Sword on my I-pad and I use that for actual study.
Nice! I use the Enduring Word app as a commentary.
I've been decluttering because we are moving across the country. Our house needed to be ready for showings. It's been amazing.
my mantra is I love the space more than the clutter
Would love a video on your mantras for decluttering! ~Karen
My "mantra" is this....When in doubt, throw it out.
In the beginning of my journey, I would find myself at times "STUMPED"...should I keep this? Maybe I will need it later. How can I use this? What if? etc. What helped me push through that was my little mantra. I have learned that if you hesitate at all about keeping it, you really dont LOVE it. Just let it go. You will NEVER hesitate on something you truly love or want
I would love a video about your mantras.
My mantra is :
Nothing or Anything will still my Joy or my Sparkle.
I realise the attachment I get to things. So I tell myself I do not want the pain of having to let go.
Yes to a mantra video!
only 7 comments as I am reading this, and they are already gold. Thank you.
❤
Awww, thankyou for listening to my suggestion ♥️ I wonder if there's a stronger container or raskog trolley for this category, to save your back! It's not too busy at all! Just 4 big books. ♥️
I like 5 stitch sewing small journals / to do lists. I use up random papers I find.
I also found a happy planner paper puncher at the thrift store. It helps me try the different templates without committing to a whole book.
Oh man, Erica, don’t sweat it.
You have come a LONG way Baby!
All I have to do is think about you in that other house’s basement.
What and how you are doing, is working.
And, you look very nice today-good hair! Haha
I just had to say that.
I love your decluttering mantras 😁👍❤️. Very helpful
Bible journal is nice. And you like doing it. Great combo.
Yes! Thank you!
I'd love a list of decluttering mantras, thanks!
I don't have any mantra but what I want to say you that is beautiful how you study Bible and you have so nice and enjoyable way to do it. I need to rethink my relationship with Him. Thank you and have a nice time.
My mantra is “when in doubt, throw it out!”
Ironically, I was listening to you while getting ready for the day and started putting on my deodorant. Lol! I LOVE your notes and pictures in your Bible. That’s how I’ve started taking notes in church, just directly in my Bible. Now, every time I turn to those passages I can remember what was shared and add to my learning. 🥰
Yes, please a mantra video!
My Bible Bag and all its contents is my craft room. it is so full.
Loved these wise words of wisdom ❤if it makes you happy then great & yes Life is too short ! Lol ❤️🇮🇱💖
I love a lot of Dana k whites: Better is good, Progress and only progress, dishes math, Sass level 7/10. And it drives me nuts but 'don't put it down, put it away x2 from a lot of people is very helpful when I keep it up for a few days in a row.
I would like the mantra video, I started using one of your early mantras when I started my journey
You look great!!! .. I have been watching you for a while. What a great journey you have made... You are very inspiring. It is comforting to see that I am not the only one struggling with stuff. I appreciate your honesty. First I could not believe It was true. Thank you for documenting the thought process like mantras ect.. I struggle personally with financial guilt a lot... Thank you for your videos and for sharing..
Yes !!!! On the mantras. 👍
You look beautiful. Great video thank you so much.
I take A LOT from Dana White having ADHD makes it hard. It has to fit in its container. And I take it there now. (Helps me get my exercise too.)
You speak so fluidly. Do you use a script that is voice activated to move through itself on a screen next to your camera, or do you really have all of that content in your head? I am impressed with your lack of verbal hiccuping (ums, etc) and wondering if you have advice for other RUclipsrs trying to sound as fluid.
If you see some footage overtop my voice, I had usually cut out an "um" or the kids screaming. Instead of showing the jump screen, I cover it with a short clip. Ah the tricks of RUclipsrs. lol
Oh, and sometimes I do prepare bullets so I make sure I talk about the things I thought of. Sometimes I just ramble on and edit half of it. :)
I needed to see this! I am a paper and pen collector…and (trust me) I have more than I need. 😂
I absolutely love Bible Journaling. The container method is great cause if you store too much journalling stuff you forget what you have!
Me too! I get so excited when a word or scripture jumps out at me.
Yes on mantras. I have used several of yours in the past year+, but I would be curious to see what works for others.
I have found myself saying (usually out loud), what in the world was I thinking???
Not actually a mantra but more of a realization observation. And since when I consider buying something that I don’t really need, I flash back to this phrase in a moment of clarity. It helps! Barb Fitzgerald
Indeed! "what was I thinking??" now that's a mantra/realization I can relate to.
Decluttering mantras video? Yes please! xx
Mine : Do I know that this will serve or benefit me or my family right now in our season? If not, let’s thank God for His Provision to have been able to have it, and then let it go.
You look stunning
aw thanks!
This is off topic although I have to say it cause it needs to be said!
I LOVE THE COLOR OF YOUR HAIR AND MAKEUP ON YOU!!!❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍
I love the idea of using a bin for journals and supplies! This afternoon I’ve been trying to go through pens and stationery supplies which for some reason I find difficult 😅 Also shocked to see how many markers I’ve accumulated 😮
Yes mantras would be helpful
I love your Journaling Bible! I have a ton of Bible study stuff that I use every day. No apologies
It collects quickly, doesn't it?! I've put some of commentaries and guides in the church free library but I do tend to keep a bit.
Just watching your video... Im like you...decluttered really well and then got cluttered up again...with stuff..aghhhhhhhhh.... So trying to declutter stuff again, my walk I. Panty and surfaces seem to be magnets for attracting stuff, but I struggle cos I clean houses for a living 🤦🏼♀️... And hate dealing with my own stuff
I organised my kitchen again the other day, putting mug hangers up under my cabinets and making a drinking station...kept it looking nice all week .and failed again today..why...cos I'm feeling rough, tired and emotional as it 3 yrs since my cat got PTS... however I finally got off my lazy bum, and just unloaded the dishwasher, reloaded and wiped sides im slow so took me 40 mins and then quickly cleared my coffee table so I could light my candle in memory of my cats time of passing...
Off topic. But your hair looks fantastic
