As a 6-year-old boy, I remember this coming over the radio. We followed it until the tragic end, and all the adults warned us for days afterward never to go into fields alone for any reason. God bless Kathy with eternal peace. I so remember.

When we were kids we thought, no big deal, moms being silly, when in reality she told us that because of these kinds of stories that she knew about. Now as adults, we made it to adulthood because of our worrisome parents that made sure we stayed alive. Everything makes sense as we get older and realize that our moms knew how easy it was to get hurt out there in the world because of these kinds of stories.

Sometimes people forget the rescuers and only focus on the child or person they're rescuing and they forget that The rescuers sometimes need rescuers too maybe not at the time maybe it takes a few weeks maybe it takes a month it doesn't matter they need help and they don't get it.

Thank you Lamont for sharing this. My mother used to sing a song when I was a small boy. It started out “It was April the 8th, the year 49. Death claimed a young child, so pure and so kind. Kathy they called her…” it went on but I don’t recall the rest but this must be what that song was based on. My Mom was born in 1934. Thanks again, just sparked a bunch of memories for me 😊

As a SoCal native, this is the first time I've heard this tragic story and i'm 75 yrs old. This saddened me to the point of tears, such a heartbreak. I do remember this same scenario with baby Jessica and the world being on pins and needles and praying heavily during her rescue, which fortunately had a good outcome and she's alive today.

I was in a Montgomery Wards department store in 1980 when the U.S.A. Olympic hockey team went on to win their gold medal against Russia. Everyone in the furniture department (employees and customers) were gathered around the television sets cheering on our country. It was a moment in time I'll never forget. In his film, "Radio Days", Woody Allen paid homage to Kathy. In the film, the family were "The Phelps" and the little girl was "Polly Phelps". It was very tastefully done. I cry every time I see it, even though I've seen this film dozens of times. I felt in my heart this was based on an unfortunate true event. Now I know. May little Kathy rest in peace.🥀

There was a film starring Kirk Douglas based on this event. I remember it well from my childhood. I can’t remember the name of the film but as a child aged around 10 years old, I remember it had an extreme impact on my life because I was raised in the stick and everywhere was full of hidden dangers. Lamont, thank you for being a caring person. I was 6 years old when this tragedy happened, and I remember hearing it on the radio. I, being a child, had the need to talk to my parents and be assured that this wouldn't happen to me or my brothers. Then years ago when the baby in Texas, baby Jessica, fell in a well, those feelings returned.
