We were playing in the backyard of my mom’s friends’ house when my cousin, around nine years old at the time, fell into a well nobody knew existed. Thank God, about four of us were standing close enough to him when he started go down, and in an instant, grabbed his arms and pulled him up. You could see the rush of water below him, like a fast moving creek, and I don’t know where the water was going, but he would’ve been swept away underground😱

Yeah, well all remember as kids our parents and grandparents telling us not to play in washes and to stay away from certain things that we could get into. When we were kids we thought, no big deal, moms being silly, when in reality she told us that because of these kinds of stories that she knew about. Now as adults, we made it to adulthood because of our worrisome parents that made sure we stayed alive. Everything makes sense as we get older and realize that our moms knew how easy it was to get hurt out there in the world because of these kinds of stories.
@@earnold1896 Yeah, it would be even more tragic if they never could get to her and her body would still be down there. At least they were able to get her body to give her a funeral and a nice resting place.

This is one of the saddest stories to hear in a very long time for me, this poor little girl lost her life at a very young age so, so, sad you have to cry hearing this- - 😭❤
In his film, "Radio Days", Woody Allen paid homage to Kathy. In the film, the family were "The Phelps" and the little girl was "Polly Phelps". It was very tastefully done. I cry every time I see it, even though I've seen this film dozens of times. I felt in my heart this was based on an unfortunate true event. Now I know. May little Kathy rest in peace.🥀
There was a film starring Kirk Douglas based on this event. I remember it well from my childhood. I can’t remember the name of the film but as a child aged around 10 years old, I remember it had an extreme impact on my life because I was raised in the stick and everywhere was full of hidden dangers. I always made sure I stood on solid ground since. 🤗🏴🌹
Kirk Douglas starred as a reporter, in an Ace in the Hole. A fictitious story about a man trapped in a mine set in New Mexico in 1951. It probably drew on this tragic incident.
The Well (1951) was a movie obviously based on this event. The difference being the girl who fell in the well was a black child and she was finally rescued.
@@aileenquiroz4453 No, I think it was classed as B grade and I don't know the actors, it was not a bad movie, not great but not bad. It is here on You Tube.
Lamont, thank you for being a caring person. I was 6 years old when this tragedy happened, and I remember hearing it on the radio. I, being a child, had the need to talk to my parents and be assured that this wouldn't happen to me or my brothers. Then years ago when the baby in Texas, baby Jessica, fell in a well, those feelings returned.
I was 4 years old and still remember clearly the vigil by the radio. A few months ago the question was asked what is the first major news story you remember and I said Kathy Fiscus falling in the well and the rescue attempt. The followup pictures in the paper still stick to my mind.
A very similar tragedy in 1981 when a little boy in southern Italy fell down a well. They tried for days to rescue Alfredo by digging a parallel hole but he did not survive.
I remember we all were watching the tv while they were trying everything they could to save the boy.. it lasted days and days, and it was heartbreaking 😢

Building a memorial park on the spot where this little girl died would have been far more fitting than building a damn sports field.

My mom talked about this story a lot over the years. She was really saddened and taken aback by it. Glad you did this story!
I heard about this story for years..one of the saddest😢😢 Wished they could have saved her somehow.
Thank you Lamont for sharing this. RIP Kathy
I don't usually cry easy but this one I did😢
Me too bro
Thank You for sharing. As always splendid job and my heart goes out to this poor girl.
- "walk softly, an angel sleeps here" (read on a baby's grave years ago).
That is the most soul crushing sentence I think I’ve ever read
There was a film starring Kirk Douglas based on this event. I remember it well from my childhood. I can’t remember the name of the film but as a child aged around 10 years old, I remember it had an extreme impact on my life because I was raised in the stick and everywhere was full of hidden dangers. I always made sure I stood on solid ground since. 🤗🏴🌹
Kirk Douglas starred as a reporter, in an Ace in the Hole. A fictitious story about a man trapped in a mine set in New Mexico in 1951. It probably drew on this tragic incident.
@@brandyjean7015 Yes, you are right, thanks for jogging my memory. I really was terrified of falling down a hole after that.
The Well (1951) was a movie obviously based on this event. The difference being the girl who fell in the well was a black child and she was finally rescued.
@@midnightteapot5633was it with Kirk Douglas?
Such a tragedy! Can’t imagine their heartbreak at the loss of their child. Thanks for sharing. 🙏 🙏
A very similar tragedy in 1981
when a little boy in southern Italy fell down a well. They tried for days to rescue Alfredo by digging a parallel hole but he did not survive.
I remember we all were watching the tv while they were trying everything they could to save the boy.. it lasted days and days, and it was heartbreaking 😢
What a tragedy!!! This story reminds me of Baby Jessica McClure!
