His phone call to Paulies mother was the most hilarious moment in the series.....beating out Chris getting a beat down with that squeaking kids toy by the dealers....and the conversation then fight between Tony's cousin Tony and the Korean laundry manager.
At the same time, just associating with Ralph highlights how awful Tony is since while he doesn't like Ralph or approve of things he does, he keeps him around because he makes money. Criminals having standards doesn't mean much if they associate with people who cross the lines they don't. In Breaking Bad, Mike is horrified by Gus' murder of Victor. Then he goes back to doing Gus' dirty work.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense, either. Ralph was killed after a long, knockdown-drag-out fight with Tony, and the toupee stayed on, as the expensive ones are sealed tightly to the scalp and only removed by a hair stylist every few weeks. And yet, Chris grabs it and voila! Off it comes! 😅 David Chase just couldn't pass up the chance for some comic relief.
I think Ralphie also killed the horse to get back at Tony for taking Valentina. There were a few comparisons between women and horses on the show; Sil calling Tracie a thoroughbred and Tony initially rejecting Valentina because he “already took his [Ralphie’s] horse”. I think Ralphie thought he won’t let Tony get both. Interestingly enough, Valentina and the horse both were involved in fires and suffered burns that made both of them no use to him.

First off I love your channel. And great analysis. I have a different viewpoint of Ralph in the instances you listed. I once read a comment on another video where someone said “I used to love to hate Ralph, but then one day I realized it was more how much I hated that I loved him”. This sums up my like of his character perfectly, because in all honesty, Ralph wasn’t even close to being the most depraved on the show. I always thought of Ralph as the one who best understood how to play the hand he was dealt. When he was young, he wanted to do noble things (he wanted to be a dentist originally, something in the health field). But like you said, he was forced to provide for his family at a young age. Crime was the easiest route, and though stressful and taxing, he developed mechanisms to cope with it (drugs). But he understood there was nothing regal, traditional, or noble about the role. In his dealings with Jackie Jr. (who you noted was already introduced into the criminal world by Richie), he candidly showed him the reality of being a soldier/underling in a criminal organization. You don’t really have friends that you do business dealings with (you have expendable associates who are only as valuable as the amount of money and respect they provide you). You don’t get ahead by being a good guy, you get ahead by being audacious and bold. With Tracy, while he certainly mistreated her and was an a**hole, he did so because he saw her what she was, an emotionally damaged sex worker at a mob controlled strip club. While she probably was a sweet individual, she was also lazy and abusive to her own child. He insulted her for believing his lie of them having a storybook life because he wanted her to see just how ridiculous it was and how she was being delusional. It would have been cruel for two abused people in seedy professions to attempt to even raise a child with delusion that it would have a healthy, well adjusted life. What Ralph wanted to say was that if it was a boy it’d probably be a miserable, obnoxious and mercurial deviant like him… at best. The Pie-O-My incident was just the cold reality of business when it collides with personal objectives. The horse was an asset, and like all assets it had to deal with depreciation. His callous attitude was because he understood this reality, that you have to push it to win now, because it’s only going to get older. While it was a selfish and inconsiderate act to burn down the stables, it was for a reasonable purpose. Ralph understood that the future medical bills his son would incur would be astronomical, and at least wanted to make sure he was taken care of. Tony loved the horse, but not enough to take full ownership and liability for its care. He gladly let Ralph do that. Ultimately my interpretation was that Ralph was the whipping boy of the sopranos (though much of that was due to his own bellicose and jocular demeanor). He wasn’t the first to insult Ginny Sack, or even the most vile in his joking. He was the one whom someone felt it was justified to rat him out to another family out of petty jealousy. He isn’t the only person to kill a person on the show out in a moment of blinding rage, but he was the one who Tony felt the need to hit. He wasn’t even the most vile, but he was the most obnoxious. To quote a famous movie, the characters in the Sopranos needed Ralph, they needed him so they “could point their f**kin fingers and say that’s the bad guy!” He was a great distraction from what really was the focus of the show, the amoral nature of Tony Soprano and his circle. However, he was one of the few to acknowledge it. Btw I love the comparison of Ralph being what Tony would have been if he was raised exclusively by Livia. Great observation!
@@skewCZ I think Tony is a given. I’m not at the Phil leotardo stuff yet I just finished season 4 I’m on a rewatch but I can’t remember 5-6 so well. Probably Chris and Tony even tho it’s kind of easy to say that. I think Paulie is a weirdo I can’t lie.
The effectiveness of Ralph as a character in this series REALLY highlights the secret to making "villainous protagonist" shows like this one work: not shying away from just how despicable the main character(s) is, while also making everyone around them as bad (if they're allies) or worse (if they're enemies) so that people still have someone they can root for, without ever making such an action feel like a default or obligatory one to take. Terrific video like usual, Vile Eye!
"This is because human beings are not, technically, worth anything. A good racehorse, on the other hand, may be worth twenty thousand dollars. A doctor who lets one hurry off too soon to that great paddock in the sky may well expect to hear, out of some dark alley, a voice saying something on the lines of "Mr. Chrysoprase is very upset," and find the brief remainder of his life full of incident. While a human doctor, after much bleeding and cupping, finds that a patient has died out of sheer desperation, he can always say, "Dear me, will of the gods, that will be thirty dollars please," and walk away a free man." - Terry Pratchett
Loved it as always. I still really want to see a video on Zero Worf from Apocalypto, but I love the Godfather and Sopranos videos best. Great job again, man.
I read in the earlier draft of ep. 3x06 Tony complains about Ralphie after he leaves Tony's Sunday dinner and Tony says "Drop-out to help his family?! PLEASE! Everybody knows that Ralphie got expelled for skipping class and getting that girl doped up on Quaaludes and she DROWNED at the lake!"...I really wished they that kept in the final draft.
For more Sopranos suggestions: Livia Soprano (with maybe also Johnny Boy Soprano) Richie Aprile Phil Leotardo Jesus Rossi (the grapist from Employee of the Month)
I agree with the first 3, but there is probably not even an entire minute of Rossi put together in the entire show. Kind of hard to make an analysis with so little material
Ralph was like Shane from The Walking Dead, Adebesi from Oz, and Stringer Bell from The Wire. Once you saw them appear on screen, you paid attention. They were livewires, that peaked your interest. Once they were gone, a piece of their respective shows died with them.
You in character was perfect. You did it at exactly the right times while keeping the meat of the analysis standard and serious. Love that dedication. And love Joey Pants, he'll always be Joey Pants. Ride that wave! Hope to see Christopher Moltisanti or Memento as a whole next.

There's so much depth to so many evil characters on The Sopranos that you could seriously do Analyzing Evil videos on so many others: Livia, Janice, Christopher, Richie, Johnny Sack, The Shah of Iran, Paulie...the FBI could even have their own full episode.
quite suprised you missed that! in the end he made up with rosalie and genuinely appologised. he was changing for the better, or at least started to show signs. I think on top of killing the horse(which was never confirmed) and tracy, i think tony was also very jellous of this.
It was temporary change…just like Tony after he got shot..once it wore off he would be back to beating whooahs to death…and demanding to be put back on the street as “mommy’s little whooah”
He was my favorite character too, never a dull moment and funny af. Also his crazy antics with Janice in the bedroom "Mommy's li'l whoaah, gonna pimp you out" 😂

To quote a famous movie, the characters in the Sopranos needed Ralph, they needed him so they “could point their f**kin fingers and say that’s the bad guy!”
He was a great distraction from what really was the focus of the show, the amoral nature of Tony Soprano and his circle. However, he was one of the few to acknowledge it.
Btw I love the comparison of Ralph being what Tony would have been if he was raised exclusively by Livia. Great observation!
When it comes to entertainment factor, Ralphie is top 3 in the show for me
What about the other two? I'm guessing Philly Leotardo. Maybe Paulie?
Ralph shows how evil Tony is. Tony’s mad Ralph killed his girlfriend, but killing Tony’s horse was a death sentence.
It wasn’t the horse. It was the fat joke.
It was definitely the girl that triggered it, the horse was an investment but was also the cherry on top for Tony’s rage against Ralph
@@JoJoJoker Yeah. Tony didn't lose it until Ralph insulted his weight
She was not tony's girlfriend bro
"This is because human beings are not, technically, worth anything. A good racehorse, on the other hand, may be worth twenty thousand dollars. A doctor who lets one hurry off too soon to that great paddock in the sky may well expect to hear, out of some dark alley, a voice saying something on the lines of "Mr. Chrysoprase is very upset," and find the brief remainder of his life full of incident. While a human doctor, after much bleeding and cupping, finds that a patient has died out of sheer desperation, he can always say, "Dear me, will of the gods, that will be thirty dollars please," and walk away a free man."
- Terry Pratchett
He's probably the most despicable character on the show, yet at times shows genuine empathy and emotion which is really jarring.
Italian Vile: "Dont make me come over that you mutha.."
Me: "Aye woah take it eez 🙌🏾"
Someone probably told Vile to go get his shine box before he started recording.
I always get excited when I see you do Sopranos characters. You should do Chrissy next, he obviously has a lot for you to talk about.
Good name
I never thought about the part that Ralph is like Tony if he hadnt had a father figure. Nice analysis as always, love the Sopranos content
That phone call to Paulie's Ma was hilarious 😂
For more Sopranos suggestions:
Livia Soprano (with maybe also Johnny Boy Soprano)
Richie Aprile
Phil Leotardo
Jesus Rossi (the grapist from Employee of the Month)
I agree with the first 3, but there is probably not even an entire minute of Rossi put together in the entire show. Kind of hard to make an analysis with so little material
Now, this is a video that I have wanted for a very long time, and that intro was sublime! Bravo Sir.
"Ralph" was simply Cipher, after being reinserted into the Matrix
Analyzing evil: Vince macman
I love the opening of it 😂 also, joe Pantoliano was freaking amazing as Ralph. He became my favorite character just for the performance alone.
This was the guy who you loved to hate and hate that you loved him!
Ralph was despicable but that’s why he was one of my favorites. Poor Chris was my favorite. That broke my heart how Tony killed him like that
I’m thrilled to see you cover more Sopranos characters. I deep dive on Tony Blundetto would be fascinating.
Great profile picture!
I... I was not mentaly, phisicaly, or spritualy ready for Mr. Eye here to hit me with such a intro! He knew *WHO* he was talking about, and *HOW* to discribe him!
Next to Paulie Walnuts, Ralphie is the best. Pure chaos thrown into the mix, the devil figure....love it
Ralph never had the makings of a varsity athlete
that only applies to Tony, don't play it out
Incorrect. You know that man could’ve out played the Harlem Globetrotters
Small hands, that was his problem
"he's fuckin' obsessed with Gladiator."
would love to see an analyzing evil series dedicated to the sopranos, richie aprile next 😁
Quality content. When I see a new video from this channel I watch immediately
Please do more intros like that! I was pleasantly taken aback!
Ralph liking Gladiator is a rare Ralph W
My favorite character. Very allegorical
Charles Schwab ova here..
This guy just doesn’t stop surprising me lmao I wasn’t expecting that intro at all
Gyp Rosetti from Boardwalk Empire deserves a video. He makes Ralph look like a choir boy.
Blew up a whole club just to try and get nucky
@@tapset and killed numerous people for just random reasons passing through his mind.
I was NOT expecting this intro! That along with the Junior clip had me laughing so much! Great job with this video, I hope to see you do Christopher someday! ^^
the governor, micah and now ralph? this dudes hitting all my favorite characters
0:19 Nice suit! You look really sophisticated 🤌🏻
2:21 This clip alone makes me laugh so much harder than any comedy has.
Great video on an amazing subject. Can you please do a video on Phil Leotardo next?
There's so much depth to so many evil characters on The Sopranos that you could seriously do Analyzing Evil videos on so many others: Livia, Janice, Christopher, Richie, Johnny Sack, The Shah of Iran, Paulie...the FBI could even have their own full episode.
Oh! This fuckin Vile Eye, more creative than Spielberg.
ralph was changing, something tony never could.
quite suprised you missed that! in the end he made up with rosalie and genuinely appologised. he was changing for the better, or at least started to show signs. I think on top of killing the horse(which was never confirmed) and tracy, i think tony was also very jellous of this.
It was temporary change…just like Tony after he got shot..once it wore off he would be back to beating whooahs to death…and demanding to be put back on the street as “mommy’s little whooah”
@@anthonyrobbins9778 it was temporary since tony killed him haha
Unlikeable? I loved Ralph!
He was my favorite character too, never a dull moment and funny af. Also his crazy antics with Janice in the bedroom "Mommy's li'l whoaah, gonna pimp you out" 😂
Loved him like a brother in law...
Love seeing you have fun with your videos! Thanks for the wonderful content!
You should do Analyzing Evil: Otis Firefly
He’s one of my favorite villain
Your new thumbnail format and new energetic tone is certain to bring in new viewers! Glad to see you chance pace! up and up!
I wanted an episode on Phil Leotardo so I compromised and got one on Ralph Ciffaretto
This is perfect!!
Another character from the Sopranos that could be analyzed is Livia and maybe Junior, Richie or Janice
The Boys need to have like a 4 hour episode around Billy Butcher, Homelander and Vought
Its cool to see that youre getting comfortable and having more fun on camera. That intro was gold
Would absolutely love more sopranos content
Can you do one for chuck mcgill from better call saul
He wasnt evil but his envy towards jimmy …
Well done, as always! I absolutely love this channel!!
This video is long long long overdue plus the opening of your video is beyond hilarious. This Sopranos character beyond deserves to be on this channel. Every thing you are saying about him is beyond accurate and true.
Here's who I'd love to see featured on "Analyzing Evil" someday soon:
*Emperor Gorganus of Meleculah (Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills) [30th anniversary!]
*Ommadon the Red (The Flight of Dragons)
*Zhang Li (Perfect Dark franchise)
1:14 seconds...Im realdy hittin the liek button for Gangster vile eye
This is the kind of intro we demand every time from now on
Junior Soprano should be next from this series. Other suggestion for villains to explore:
J R Ewing-Dallas
Nucky Thompson-Boardwalk Empire
Johnny Friendly-On The Waterfront
Cody Jarrett-White Heat
I’d love to see an Analysing Evil analysis on Homelander
It really says a lot about Ralph that all the other mobsters didnt mind seeing him gone after Tony killed him over Pie-o-my
The creator of the show said tony did it for the stripper.
It was over alot more than that. Ralph had it coming for sure.
They were all more worried about their own lives because he whacked the guy ova a horsh
Awesome video! S-tier actor playing an S-tier scumbag, great acting with great writing 🤘
