  • The original Resident Evil 3 was handicapped by a short development cycle and a lack of resources. So you'd think a remake would be the perfect opportunity to fix those problems. Nope.

    Where and when Nemesis showed up was never random in the OG. Its based upon where you are, and if you fought him previously. But no matter how you slice it there are 7 Nemesis encounters.
    There are things you can do to change his spawn points (like fight and beat him), but he will still ONLY show up at set points. They made it feel random by just having him run on screen without giving him a cutscene a couple times... But it was not random.
    But it truly speaks to how well implemented and executed Nemesis was in the OG RE3 if 25 years later and LOTS of people still think he showed up randomly.
    The problem with the remake's Nemesis is two-fold.
    1. He's on screen too much.
    You can't show the monster for too long, because then it stops being scary and becomes "camp", or God forbid funny.
    And rather than have several short Nemesis interactions like the OG RE3 did... The RE3-Make went for longer interactions... And that was the wrong way to go. By the third time you see him you're not even afraid of him anymore...
    But that also has to do with the 2nd Nemesis issue.
    2. The even bigger problem is how almost every time Nemmy shows up, the game devolves into contextual quicktime events and it feels like watching a cutscenes with minor player input, rather than an intense showdown that you are actively choosing to engage with or run away from.
    They constantly snatch control away from the player during the times when we should have had the most control...
    I think the length is definitely an issue. RE3 is already break-neck paced, and the Park and Clocktower did an excellent job at helping to pace the game... So on top of shortening an already shorter game, it also hurts the overall pacing and removes 2 unique areas that help break the city up visually.

    • @Miyakolover
      @Miyakolover 5 месяцев назад +10

      The way Nemisis works in OG RE3 still felt random and unpredictable though, especially on first playthrough...which is not something I can say for the Remake.

      This is how I felt about Mr. X from the RE2 "remake". He wasn't scary or threatening, just tedious and annoying. Of course the whole game was just tedious and annoying so I guess it lines up.

    • @TheQuietTimes
      @TheQuietTimes 4 месяца назад +2

      @@jovenc4508 Agreed. It was cool to see the idea of a stalker enemy built upon and expanded, but it doesn't take long before Mr. X becomes more of a 'dynamic environmental obstacle' than a 'threatening force' closing in on your location at all times.
      There comes a point where he almost stops being a character, and becomes a game mechanic that you have to account for.
      And the biggest reason why it becomes less effective as the game goes on is because at a certain point you aren't even scared of Mr. X... or dying at his hands really.
      And that should be the whole point of his inclusion..
      The best they can hope for is to build tension by inserting him in areas where there are other threats... But even that starts to feel shallow and more 'tedious' than 'tension filled' as you have more encounters with him.
      And Nemesis is even worse because his implementation is more area/set-pieced-based, and less about throwing him in environments and letting him act/react dynamically to how you respond to his insertion.

    Resident evil 3 reminds me of my dead mum. When I ought the original I also bought Ghostface Killahs 2nd album, Supreme clientele. I remember playing that album in my room while playing this game. It was a stormy night which helped with the survival horror atmosphere. • @CursedWheelieBin
      @CursedWheelieBin 5 месяцев назад +9

      That’s fair. It’s clear that those in charge at Capcom prioritised short term profits by rushing the remake.
      If they’d have played it smart, allowed their best and brightest more time and resources to work on it, then they could have created a product that takes on a life of its own, guaranteeing legacy sales, a lot like previous entries that get ported to and resold for years and years.
      They’ve sh@t the bed and they realised that when they went onto remake RE4.
      - Branching story paths would add incentive to replay
      - RNG deciding which enemies you face in certain areas keeps things interesting
      - Expand on ammo crafting. The original nailed this without all the miracles of modern tech
      - Make Nemesis a stalker enemy. Less scripted crap. Build up his intro. Again, the original used him perfectly to create a tense atmosphere, 20+ years earlier without all the alleged advancements that Capcom now has.
      - Get rid of that pathetic lab section at the end. It’s supposed to be small town america in 1998, not the starship Enterprise. Maybe have an aesthetic that hearkens back to either the RE2 lab, or the Arklay mansion lab. Not something that looks unremarkably and generically futuristic ffs 🤦‍♂️
      - Get rid of the tedious “hold UP” sections followed by cutscene, followed by hold UP again. It’s not exciting or engaging. It’s boring and frustrating. If that’s the only way you can do an escape from Jill’s home then it’s not worth doing. It’s as though those sections are designed for people who’ve never played a videogame

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 5 месяцев назад +3

      Its successes stem from what its borrowing from RE2R, which is a very good foundation, but it fails at everything new it adds. That's where the issue lies.
      Plus Nemesis was practically the face of RE for a long time, only reason he stopped was lacking relevance. Then RE2 takes his OG game design and improves on it in Remake's Mr X, and its such a massive success that MR X became the newest super popular enemy (especially as newer fans were not familiar with nemesis) basically emulating Nemesis' success for the new generation. When it came time for Nemesis to retake his throne, its completely botched! Not only is he worse than MR X, but he's even worse than his OG version somehow, basically designed like OG Mr X. On top of this, he is regularly made fun of in the game and not taken seriously by Jill, and despite being able to break through walls is easily blocked by Ikea products, and can be killed in seconds and then ignored. He's a complete joke in the game. Even his transformations aren't as good. Though I like the look of his "dog" form, I don't think its fitting for him, and at the very least comes too early in the game (need an inbetween form like what the OG would do). But his final boss fight is one of the worst in the series.
      Considering also that the game is filled with Zombies that are barely a threat, and then everything else is an insta-kill, and its a very poorly balanced game.
      Not to mention the Main Character being incorrectly named Jill Valentine, even though that is already a name of a character in this series, and definitely isn't the one in this game because she doesn't resemble the real Jill in any way.
      These things really set the game back a lot. There's fun to be had, but its not a consistent game, so there is a lot of annoyances to trudge through as well.

    It is kinda funny how the Resident Evil remakes have been received about the same way as the original games were back in the day. 1 probably gives the most unique and most Resident Evil of Resident Evil. 2 expands on it, giving new perspectives and giving us the real zombie apocalypse. Then 3 trying to be a big climax and kind of tripping over itself, losing focus on what made the previous games as beloved as they were.

      Except it wasn't the same team that made RE4, or even RE2, so they theoretically should have had more time. It was just rushed for some reason. Like Capcom wanted it out by a certain date, but didn't want them to start working on it until RE2 was finished, rather than side by side, leaving it to have like 1 year of development at most. I bet they expected the games could come out yearly, and didn't want to push off any of the other REs to give this one more time, and definitely wouldn't have 2 RE games competing in the same year (since RE8 was coming out soon, though that one would also have benefitted from more development time).

    I enjoyed it for what it was and hate it for what it tries to be and what it tries to replace.
    Honestly, while I do agree that RE 3: Nemesis was a bit more on the forgettable spectrum of early RE titles. Simply known for "being more action focused," I find that the game still added new layers to the early RE formula that fans who played those early titles would pleasantly be surprised by, and later sing the praises of.
    In-game story choices, multiple endings, Nemesis spontaneously following, being able to defeat him during your encounters, and more.
    The fact that this game plays more as a movie and they didn't include the story choices and multiple endings is crazy to me.
    Especially after RE 2 and RE4. You can tell that they just wanted to rush through this game just to get to the more lucrative, ambitious, fan favorite RE4 remake. Which is a damn shame.
    For what it was worth... i loved the short Nemesis encounters. If you play stupid. By not playing efficiently or using the hilarious one hit kill grenade. Him jumping and rushing you in a street full of zombies can add fun tension for a moment; and the hospital can also be fun if you play with limited resources, and slow pace. It requires a lot on your part. But its worth it if you wish to play the game with the imagination and expectation you were looking for in the first place.

    I think wishing for more characterization of RE characters now that we have escaped the PS1's limited days is definitely a valid wish. Your point about not getting to see Jill in the RPD building is a good one. I did enjoy seeing Raccoon City in a state of active collapse, as opposed to after the collapse occurred in RE2. I wish they had done more with that and the UBCS extraction effort. Maybe showed us the police trying to make a stand and do something. RE3 original had a intro cutscene showing the cops trying to stop a zombie horde that one of those shit Wes Anderson films actually did as well.

    I’ll give nemesis this, in inferno he is hard and there’s that 1 singular section where he follows you. It shows some good ideas I liked the sections individually but they cut puzzles and shortened it. The ptsd scene would have been fun to of been expanded, tbh a ptsd induced dream where she fights yawn would have been a nice tutorial for the dodge mechanic and a fun fast paced intro. The rcpd section was too short, the hospital was fun and atmospheric but ended with cod zombies. They had a chance to make Jill’s parts more action based with nemesis chasing her and Carlos’ scenes atmospheric and creepy ex the hospital. The theme of re3 is instead of a city or police station it’s a whole city, the game would of been brilliant if it had open world exploring scenes like re4 remake added maybe a few side quests to help survivors ( it’s within Jill’s personality )

      That’s something that RE3 remake will never have. They made a quick Buck from pre-orders. Whoop-Dee-Doo.
      Nowadays it costs about £12 (maybe less) because it has such little value.

    I beat RE1 on PS1 back in the day, and I played Re2 on PS1. I recently been going through the series trying to platinum all the games so far platinum zero and one I’ve got four trophies left to platinum two. I wanted to take a break, so I started playing three. I was able to just beat this game without using a guide to figure out where to go or where to find this key or that item or that piece. And then every time nemesis would jump out I was like this guy again?! I liked when the bosses were kind of puzzle sort of than just throw all the ammo you have out until he’s done that was really annoying. The part where he’s in that circle and returns like amphibious looking and he runs on the buildings and you gotta know that you had to bring the mine grenades with you to shoot the mine to blow up for him to fall and shoot them in the chest. I beat it and then I was like yeah I’m not wasting my time trying to platinum this. I can’t play it more times.

    I still like this game. Considering how fast the devs probably was required to push it out, they made a good work with it. Jill is badass, as she should be, the new characterization of Carlos is a huge improvement, Nicolai was a pretty good obvious badguy. As for what's left out or done differently, I think it's all in service of a tighter story pacing. You too said how the original had lots of running around on the streets. It's all about getting out asap, before they nuke the city, no time to fuck around, right?
    As for Marvin the policeman and Kendo the gunshop owner, they are both in RE2 remake, and it's good to see what's up with them before that game happens. It being Brad who bites Marvin, and that's why he's telling to kill any zombie to Leon/Claire, no matter who they were is a good story beat.
    So yeah, it's not a perfect game, it's more like what the original RE3 was supposed to be. An expansion for RE2. I might've been angry if I bought it at full price, but I grabbed it for 15$ on sale, so I'm perfectly fine with it.
    PS: the choices in the original game not making a return? To be honest, they didn't really change much in that game.

    We need a resident evil outbreak reboot. That game was really cool on ps2. I liked being able to use random melee weapons being different characters with different abilities and playing different levels in different cities.😊

    11:58 You state here how Jill being infected by a form of the T Virus only in a dream sequence then never mentioned again, then later specifically reference the Carlos RPD section, while Jill is out of action. Factually yes, it became part of the story, similarly to the original, but I think it could've been executed better.
    I like your thoughts of Jill being able to explore her old office and somehow they should've made it so that Jill woke up in the RPD instead of the hospital maybe? But then again I don't know how they could've made this work given that the tram had already left the main city area by the time Jill got to the point of being infected. That would entail Jill being dragged back to the city, the very place they were escaping in the first place lol.

    This was my very first Resident Evil game, and I did appreciate it's simplicity and length. Have now played Origins and 2. Good intro for a newbie, but I can understand the anger and frustration of og fans.

    I consider the Resident Evil 3 remake the best Resident Evil movie. It feels like an adaptation of the original PS1 game instead of trying to represent the key moments of the game again.
    And people say the clock tower and Raccoon City Park segments "weren't removed" in REmake 3. But then you have the Resident Evil 2 remake add the orphanage for Sherry and also combine the train elevator with the escape train at the end. The former is an entirely new segment and the latter condensed two things from the original RE2 and still managed to feature both in the remake. So, yes, the clock tower and the park in RE3's remake were absolutely removed.
    Aside from cutscenes, interactive cutscenes, and scripted segments, this is why I say REmake 3 is like a film adaptation. "Hey, there's the clock tower, like in the game. But they're just getting right to the 'boss fight' for the action sequence. Oh! There's the moment when Nemesis gets caught in the gas station explosion. Too bad they couldn't work in the restaurant gas leak into the plot." Gameplay-wise, it feels less like REmake 2 and more like a Resident Evil 6 campaign. The dodging mechanic returns from the original RE3, leading to understandably not featuring the defense knives and grenades like in the first two remakes. I'm personally a little disappointed to see that remake feature consistency go away with the third game.
    Besides having a different team develop REmake 2, the team for REmake 3 probably had less time to put out the game as well. That's another aspect that doesn't help the game's quality. Nemesis should have operated like Mr. X, aside from moments when he has weapons. But that would have likely required a bigger city streets segment to explore.
    edit: Also, Jill lifting and firing the railgun is equivalent to the absurdity of Chris punching a boulder in Resident Evil 5. So it's good to see both original series protagonists have a display of over-the-top strength. Even if both are ridiculous.

    I don't know what Capcom's plans are for what's next in this series but they need to put it on hold and re-remake Resident Evil 3 and actually put in the effort to make it not shit
    And then give it to RE3 Remake owners for free for leaving us to chew on this soggy embarrassment

      You seriously think that’ll happen?
      The internet has really exposed the culture of casual entitlement in the gaming community.
      I can think of no investment worse for an organisation that makes video games than to remake a remake that came out 4 years ago.

      There's no way that they will remake it again sadly, and there is certainly no guarantee that they won't mess it up again if they did (especially how they treated ""Jill""). The best we can hope for is maybe after the innevitable RE5 remake, they redesign RE6 from the ground up and make it very similar to 3 in a lot of ways, so it can be a sort of spiritual successor to it. I think the fact that 6 has a lot of sections that are about a modern city being ravaged by zombies, and even has a pseudo Nemesis character for Leon's campaign, means that it has enough setup to just redo RE3 again just with a new story and characters (or even switch out the characters so Jill is part of it). Granted I do actually like 6, but I'd be fine with the story getting some changes, as long as they still try to make several campaigns with a different tone to each. Basically, have one campaign (like Leon's) be more like RE2R in gameplay, then Chris' in RE4R style. I doubt they'd go through the effort to make more than that because they haven't been willing to have all the content of the originals in the Remakes so far, all of them have been shorter, so that's likely the best we'd get. But this is something to consider years from now, we still don't know anything about an RE5 remake yet.

      @@CursedWheelieBin Do you seriously think I'd genuinely expect that?
      I'm being a sour bastard because I'm miffed about all the bizarre decisions Capcom made that resulted in the game being a lousy meh of an experience which pales in comparison to the original despite its own faults.
      Like sure, I'd take a better done RE3 remake if one fell out of the sky but good lord man, you'd be fooling yourself if you think that I need even _one_ other person on this planet to go out of their way to convince me it ain't happening. There's a better chance of Jesus himself showing up at my doorstep and handing me 40 million untaxable dollars.
      You sure are right that the internet exposes a lot of qualities from a lot of people. But you might be happy to find out that your comment doesn't describe me.

      The closest thing that Capcom could do now is an Outbreak Remake. That way they could at least expand upon Raccoon City more. Sadly I kind of doubt they'll do that since Resistance was kind of there attempt at a new Outbreak & that turned out to be meh at best.
