I bought this guitar in 1981. It's just fantastic. I had to do some work on it about 10 years later, and again 2006 similar to what you described. But it has just served me so well. If this was still available I'd be interested. To own two of these would be great. Nothing sounds like this guitar.
10x’s sweeter and warmer than any Taylor or Gibson. It’s not loud and obnoxious, just well balance and has that smooth vintage sound. I agree it’s probably a soloist guitar, you don’t want to bury it amongst other competing instruments. I’m going to keep my eye out for that model 😉This is the 1st guitar I’ve heard that’s made me want another guitar besides my one and only 1981 HD-28. Not as a replacement but as an alternative to it.
Sounds great. The guy who runs the open mic in Snohomish, an accomplished musician, plays an M38. It was new to me. I'm used to 000 and D styles. But he swears by it. Sounds great when he's up there!
I have a 0000-38 that I purchased in '94 (?) and love it. I think the main difference is that the 0000 has an ebony bridge as well. Mine also has gold hardware.
I have a 1987 M-38. It's an incredible sounding instrument. I inherited it from a dear friend. Money couldn't buy it. It had to have a neck reset which I had done at Glaser Instruments in Nashville. I had them put it on the PLEK machine too. It made all the difference in the world. It is truly a joy to play!
Dang bro you’re versatile...singing and playing well. That’s a sweet Martin. It really shines for fingerpicking. I’ve played for 40 years and just started playing acoustic seriously. My wife got me a 000 RS1 a month ago. Electric has become boring for me and acoustic is a great new challenge. Keep up the good work with the videos.
Nice guitar. I can sort of hear what the owner is complaining about: it does sound a little shrill when played hard. I think that's a basic tradeoff between guitars suited for fingestyle vs. flat picking. A great fingerstyle guitar will sounds a tad bright when strummed hard with a pick. Does this one have a truss rod?
I must have had some $$ in 1983, as I acquired an M-36 brand new. The guy I bought it from gave me two facts which I've never been able to confirm or disprove: 1) David Bromberg (allegedly) asked Martin to make a model based on the outline of an old arch top he owned, and the M's were the result; 2)Regarding the size: that it would "hold as much water as a dreadnought" though it may not look it. I have found it to be a somewhat delicate instrument, more sensitive to low humidity for example. It's the only of my dozen or so guitars that's developed cracks due to lapses in diligence on my part w/ humidification in my wood-heated house. My bad, sure, but it's the only one to have done so. Someone told me that they stopped making them b/c they were doing a lot of repairs and concluded that the bracing was a bit on the light side. The sound is lovely; a lot brighter than my go-to everyday box, a 1946 00-17 mahogany gem, but still retaining that Martin bass presence. It is nowhere near as loud as a dread, but has tones you won't find in the D's. I actually tried a set of silk/steel strings on it once, and it sounded sublime in a whispery kinda way.
Sure hope my Dad still passes this down to me someday like he always promises!!!! :) Opening this Martin case smells better than the finest coffee you can find on the planet! soooo rich! its a perfct size. Probably not as bassy with the smaller body but really belts out sound for its size
Love watching your videos here in Colorado. I know it's just a matter of time before your at 100k subs. Keep up the great quality. God bless. P.S. as a big Collings fan I would love to see a Collings video.
Jeremy, I really enjoy your videos. My son just purchased an Agile AL-2000 from the local (Durham, NC) Habit Restore shop. I know a guitar from a Restore shop? I thought they only sold building construction items. Anyway, he got it for $45. It is in good shape, but I am not familiar with Agile guitars. Any insights?
I had an 83 D35 for a while... had to trade it in part of the package I put together to get my D45... but it was sweet! Martin is always the best... those 80’s are gems
Great sounding guitar, you are a very good singer too! The guitar reminded me a lot but not exactly, of a Taylor 714 or somewhere in that neighborhood. Which IMO is very swiss army knife, like a jumbo or a dreadnought or a slope shoulder or an OM or a single OO.
Hey. J Thanks. I have dirty 30,s ooo and Ros 10 and love them. Have you played an ROt16? I'm curious to how it compares to the other two. I heard it compared to a Martin 18ooo. I want it as my main guitar? The dirty 30,s is kinda unique and unrefined sounding. The Ros 10 more balance and woody fingerpicking depth. I'm thinking that the ROt16 is maybe more balanced? I have to buy online. Hey enjoyed watching your videos this morning. If need a Watson for some guitar hunting sign me up!
I fell in love with a 2008 Martin D-28 Marquis. Not the incredible tone of the '37 Authentic, but to me at least, it's close. The Marquis has an adjustable truss rod and the Authentic didn't. The Adirondack top on the Marquis is just getting better and better. And MUCH cheaper than the "37 A. I don't play near well enough to have a guitar with bling, so the Marquis was a fit for me. OK, I'd prefer the D-28 GE (Brazilian), but no way could I afford it. My ear is not so developed that I can hear that much of a difference.
For volume. But, the question is can it be lowered without resetting the neck (how much saddle is left?). And is the relief set purposely high - or what? In other words, what is making the action high?
I love the sound of that guitar, of course now I want one. If I had not just bought a 000-15M I would have been pretty interested. I sounded pretty loud to me. The price seems very fair.
if they reset the neck and the action is now lower than before that could be contributing to the fact that the guitar is not as loud as it was before! just a thought.
An awesome sounding guitar. Seem like the volume went down when you put the capo on and tuned it down. Why would do all that work? Was a reject as a new guitar? Martin has been known to sell a few of them. I had a 1975 D35 I bought new. It never sounded good. I bought a New D35 in 2001. I love it. I would never sell it.
Thomas Tommy Any Martin before 1984 needs a neck reset. This one just needed an update. It sounds great and has for a long time. Your Martin from the 70’s has a rosewood bridge plate which is why it sounded so bad.
@@JeremySheppard My older brother bought a New D35 the same year. It sounded great. (He still had it when he passed away two years ago. His sounded so great. That is why I bought one. Can you explain that?
Thomas Tommy I’m sorry to hear that. It could be a bunch of things. Sometimes they have more mojo than others. Could also be how tight the dovetail joint was, bridgeplate or bracing.
Not the greatest sounding Martin. It breaks up quickly and sounds lackluster when played softly. I never understood the rosewood bridge and ebony finger board.

I’d like to buy that guitar if you still have it
I saw Vince Gill playing an M size. Sounded great.
Great. Saw this 2 years too late.
Buddy... come on... that guitar is insane!

Tim Barber that’s awesome! I’ve found deals in weird places.

Mitchell horner 80’s Martins are killer. Had a 1985 J-40 that was great. They’re good to buy now and are still fairly affordable.
Extremely cool guitar
Jeremy, You have a very, very Good Voice! You should play & sing more on your videos.........
Beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing.
What is the neck shape on that guitar? I live in Annandale VA, are you still in Virginia?
Rick Allen thin C. I’m in Harrisonburg!
It's C.F. Martin's best kept secret. I love mine it's performed flawlessly.
Nice Derek Webb cover! Very cool guitar as well!
I thought the same thing! Jeremy turned me on to that song years ago and it's still one of my go-to songs!
Hell I'd buy just for the case! Nice guitar! It should sell fast.

One of the best Martins I ever played was an M-38. I've also played a stinker though.....
6:27. Awesome song
Beautiful guitar. It's succesor is the awesome m36, my next guitar
Amazing guitar
IL buy it! It will take 10 years though. Any chance of a discount?
Have u played recording king guitars? I value your judgement!
I have played recording kings and they’re killer. They remind me of blue ridge.

Why would you keep the action high when playing out without a pickup? Love the videos, keep it up. Thanks.
For volume. But, the question is can it be lowered without resetting the neck (how much saddle is left?). And is the relief set purposely high - or what? In other words, what is making the action high?
Looks like there's a gap where the fretboard meets the body...is that an illusion?

Hard to sell a piece of your history like that. Hope he doesnt regret it
Is that a Alvarez AJ80CE behind you on the wall?!?!?
Do a video of all your guitars!
Is that over-dubbed clapping at 0:05? Sounds cool either way.
Sorry, 0:04 maybe.
Not only can the Good Sheppard play guitar. He can sing too
Yeah, he surely can.
What's your friend replacing this one with?
Matthew Smith a Gibson CL-45. fairly rare, beautiful and boomy J45 type guitar.
if they reset the neck and the action is now lower than before that could be contributing to the fact that the guitar is not as loud as it was before! just a thought.
Outstanding ! Keep up the good work...."To the Moon and back"
Hey did you ever sell that guitar?
I did, few months ago.
I'm assuming it sold?
Yes, about a year ago.
Love a little Iron and Wine.
Yeah! I like it 👍 heart of gold 😆
0000 body👍
Can we check out your friend Dave, has he got a surname and some videos,he sound very interesting.
Michael Dickinson yes, Dave Nealon. I’ll try to find some stuff.

3 piece back?
No, 2 piece.
What’s the scale length?
25.5” I believe....I’ll confirm.
25.4”
Are you calling me old, boy??😆 lol.....
Wedding Dress!
Shoot I'm left handed
janie utley Janie! Me too. I want to make a video about how I ended up playing lefty. What do you play? How has it been being left handed?
That’s pretty loud
$2399 is dirty cheap...
Freight train :-D

Sounds like a bad guitar, seeming as its needed so many repairs
N e v I l l e N I c o l All martins before 1984 need neck resets and all guitars need regular maintenance. This guitar is stellar.
When i need my guitar set up i take it to the martin authorized repair guy at the music store i do t send it to Martin every 6 months

I dont.like it
If only you could play. Just kidding. You are alright.
Sounded disgusting 😬 definitely wouldn’t buy. Sounds like a laminated guitar with a solid top.
