I'd love to see your reaction to a song like "Wesley's Theory" by Kendrick Lamar. I mean, he has so many great tracks. Humble was a hit, but it isn't even in my top 25 Kendrick tracks. "United in Grief" would be another interesting one.
"U" would be one of the most interesting from a vocal perspective, since he conveys so much. "Maad City" and "Fear" are up there too for that. "Mother I Sober" is featuring Beth Gibbons, who is of course amazing, and I think vocally Kendrick matches her vulnerability, and lyrically takes it to another level.
Humble is fine but if I had one track to show someone how unbelievable of an artist Kendrick is, this would be one of my last picks.

when kendrick said "be humble, b**** sit down", he ain’t necessarily referring to women, he is talking to various individuals, including his peers in the music industry, people in positions of power, and possibly himself, urging them to remain humble despite their success or status.

Some people are just better at processing music than others. That's a scientific fact. I studied theory and composition as my major in university.
Take metal music, for example. To most people it's angry or scary and chaotic and comes off as dissonant noise. Dadaist composers in the early 20th century faced the same issue.
It's not that the music these artists produce is straight trash. It's actually, from a standpoint of tonality, diversity and complexity of chord structure and development, so on, incredibly brilliant music. Genius level artistry.
It's just that most people are just god awful at understanding and processing music. No cap. They just have unsophisticated ears and don't have the right amount of density in a small group of neural folds to understand what they're hearing.
Same issue applies here. Personally, this is one of Kendrick's two best pieces of work. It's subtly brilliant.
People just dumb af and sorry, that's all.

I’m a metalhead at heart and of an age where I witnessed the “birth” of Rap/Hip-Hop as a popular genre with bands like NWA and Run DMC. At the time I couldn’t stand it, and would still generally say I am not a fan. There are some good songs but as a whole I can leave most of it.
Having said that I took my son to see Kendrick a couple of years ago because he loves rap and wanted to go. I started listening to him so I wouldn’t be going in blind and I was impressed with a lot of his work.
The show itself was phenomenal, and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some great live bands. He came out and was alone on stage for most of the set. His energy was amazing, you could tell he enjoyed doing what he was doing, and he was as clear lyrically live as he is on the studio version. The crowd had an energy that I have only ever truly felt at Iron Maiden or Sabaton shows. It was a truly wonderful experience.
I am still not a fan of most of what my son listens to, but some of it, like Kendrick, is very good.

    • @mrfrostwing
      @mrfrostwing 5 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, it really sucks that rap today is nearly popularized by mumble and bland lyricism. Kendrick Lamar really is one of the greatest to ever put pen to paper, even in some of his more trap songs. Idk if you are familiar with him, but Kanye West's old music is also very good and I would recommend it (preferably The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy).

I like Kendrick, he really has some good stuff, but never understood how this track was so popular, definitely not his best in my opinion. He (or his label) seems to be pandering to what he thinks the public wants from its rap artists in a bid to sell records. It's got an average, monotonous flow and lyrics a schoolboy could have written. But hey, everyone has different tastes and I'm not going to diss anyone who like this.

Well, this song was actually made on the entire basis of "Kendrick can't produce a good trap song". He took that with a chip on his shoulder and made one of the most streamed songs ever. While this isn't even close to his best work, it is something that is catchy and so foreign to his previous music that media outlets ate it up. I personally prefer DNA. as a trap song over HUMBLE.. DNA. had great flow, lyricism, and a very impactful message to a certain set of reporters who discredited him.

This is just nonsense lyrics put to a beat. There is nothing that impressive here at all. Yes some of the patterns of the flow are pleasing, but the lyrics themselves are just nonsense and put there just to rhyme and keep the cadence working. I like hip hop, but this just seems like a 10th grader that thinks they're really deep.

@@dutchplanderlinde8883 Demonstrate why. If it's a "standout" track, then you should be able to demonstrably show why. Kendrick's ability to flow is impressive no doubt, but the lyrics are complete and utter garbage. There's no clever or hidden doubles, there's nothing of substance. Nonsense lyrics. "Bitch sit down, be humble". This is what passes as "standout"? I'd rather listen to Pete & Bas than this

@YTSucksMyAss Well, my friend, with an honestly great nickname, allow me to defend my position briefly and as simply as I can.
I majored in the study and comprehension of music theory with additional credits in musical composition at the college and university level. I am proud to add to this qualification that I made my living for nearly a decade as a professional touring musician.
I apologize for the caveat to come, but I prefer honesty. As such, I genuinely don't care what your opinion is regarding this information. I also would prefer to avoid making this discussion hostile. If things get insulting or ugly, I'm out. I'm not trying to be blunt, only honest.
As a result of education, training, and experience, I will gladly admit that the words in the song and overall vocal timbre, the story, theme, or lesson of the lyrics mean nothing to me as a listener. I give the words zero attention or weight as a consideration when I judge a song.
Those are words. They are not music. They can be rhythmic. They can be shifted in pitch and tone. They can be delivered in a melodic fashion.
They are not music. I just... don't care about that aspect of the track at all. Holds no value to me because that is not music, nor is it musical on a fundamental, mathematical level.
I'm therefore not certain how to explain why I find better than average worth in this track. You're judging its lyrical content, and I'm placing my value entirely on its compositional worth as a piece of music.
More than happy to keep talking. This is literally my expertise and has been my only obsession since I was 7. No cap. This is so fun for me, and I'm stoked that you responded. Thank you.
