Excellent work. You are definitely an artist. It reminds me of the work my dad used to do. Every detail is precise and so is the explanation. Thank you very much.
Ken you are a very imaginative person. Every one of your projects are awesome, wonderful. Thanks for uploading. Greetings from the end of the world.. Chile.
Thanks Ken for the design. I have built mine from your plans though I have to say the sizes are a little out. Those pipes aren't available her in the UK so I had to buy them in Home Depot on a recent visit to the USA. My wife wasn't too happy about being taken to a hardware store on our first day of the vacation. We had actually gone to Nashville to see the total eclipse, and its amazing how often we heard the trains passing through sounding their horns. The guys in Home Depot were bemused when I told them what I wanted the fittings for but they were keen to cut them to sizes I could fit in the suitcase. All in all it was a great project and a great trip.
Nice project, I am sure that you will have to be one of the coolest grandpa to have, or even the coolest guy on the block looking at the lathe behind too. thanks for sharing this
Thank you Ken for sharing your project with us! I'm going to attempt one with six tones similar to the Rizzoli six chime that's on the 504 at Silver Dollar City. I love hearing that whistle echo through the Ozarks around that area!
Excellent presentation! Clear, concise, and complete. It is refreshing to actually hear someone speaking and giving explanations in an instructional video. Far too many of them are vocally silent productions showing only a confusing series of the presenter's "wizardry" . At the conclusion, we are supposed to be impressed -- NOT! Great job in so many ways.
I'm a HS band director, making this for my MS colleague. The pitches make a G minor 7th chord, or (lowest to highest) G, Bb, D, F. In experimenting with the lengths during construction, this was the most logical configuration. So G = 10 in. pipe, Bb = 9 in. pipe, D = 8 in. pipe, F = 7 in. pipe. I'll be fine tuning it so the lengths will be more precise, but these are the approximate lengths for each pitch.
I was actualy just trying to determin the lengths had the first on (7" ) then I saw this Knew my first one was right when I saw this Ill take your word on the rest:) Thanks for doing that work
@@adamdrummer1991 Yeah, it seems you're right. Couldn't hear it well, but I guess to my ears the minor chord sounded more train like, and the bellows driven whistles makes that hard to tell what's sounding in the right pitch. 🤷🏻♂️
This is awesome, I need one for a country music gig I'm doing in two weeks and couldn't find a wooden whistle that sounds like yours. So glad I found this. You're the MAN, thanks for sharing.
Fantastic, Ken! You come off as an all around great guy. Hats off from one creative old fart to another. I'll be taking your project and building one for my man cave/workshop to be used with compressed air. I can't wait to see my grandson's faces when they get to blow it!
Nice! My grandpa used to make us whistles the same way out of bamboo that grew in a corner of his yard. I can imagine this with a foot pedal attachment.
am confused about pipe lengths which are different between your video and your book. On the video you state that Bb is the short pipe then D then F then G. In your book you state that Bb is short pipe then G Then F then D. I am no music specialist and would like the correct info quickly as I have a deadline of March 6 to have this complete
So I'm curious the larger the pipe and shorter the tube the deeper the tone? Small the pipe longer the tube higher the tone? How dose pressure effect the whistle effect? I ask because I have a compressor at work we dump daily... might be fun to make some whistles to mount to it's dump valve haha.
Love it I’ve always had a heart felt feeling for train horns and bellows whistles there’s a melody for every single one and my heart says a song to be heard sad or merry let the whistle be sound from old paddle ships to train my family came and let the whistle sing many a family new what a whistle meant for them let it sing again thanx for the memories and the tutorial I’m going to complete my barn with old style whistles and horns and to $&@l with the neighbors. Life’s only as good as the memories and what you make of them
Loved the video and whistles . It's nice to see a mature craftsman describing a nice project in a methodical detailed way. I saw whistles like this at an old amusement park and I always wanted to build a set. Maybe now I will thanks to your video. I built a set of large air driven train whistle. The video is here an you tube. You could click on my profile if you want to see it. Keep up the good work.
I did take a look at your train whistle ...very impressive. I did make a 44-whistle air calliope a while back, worked really well, took it apart to improve on it and.....didn't make the cut when I moved and downsized
Bellows cloth? Where on earth did you find that. It looks just like a tight weave csnvas. I suppose leather is ehat they used long ago...or a was impregnated canvas? Oil impregnatrd canvas? Interesting....thanks for sharing. I wont be making one but I love to know how they were made. I once wanted to know how they made the tweets in old time toys and never could find out. One part was a bellows..from paper as far as I could tell.....but the tweet remains a mystery to me. This however explains a lot of it. Again thanks.
Look in the written narrative supplied with the youtube for details on most of the parts. The cloth is simply vinyl covered cloth found in most common fabric stores.
Somebody should build one within an adjustable tuner in other words at the top pipes that slide over or in the other pipes where you can pick it up and change the tone of the entire Whistle by sliding the pipes in and out to lengthen or shorten them if you understand what I'm talkin about pipe over pipe all fastened together so that you could just lift it up and push it down to change the tune
Thank you so much for giving us all the pertinent information and wasting zero time.
Excellent work. You are definitely an artist. It reminds me of the work my dad used to do. Every detail is precise and so is the explanation. Thank you very much.
Ken seems like a nice guy.
Thanks I need to do this for my grandson who lives and breaths trains
Ken you are a very imaginative person. Every one of your projects are awesome, wonderful. Thanks for uploading. Greetings from the end of the world.. Chile.
I've made pvc whistles but this kicks it up a notch.
Their needs to be a youtube channel dedicated to projects created by us retired guys. toot toot

Thank you so much for the video, i am going to build one for my snow blower. My little boy would love to see it when he a bit older.
Thank you so much for sharing, Mr. Ken. This will help me build a multi-tone whistle for my train projects.
Fantastic video. What a great idea. Absolutely going to make one for the kids. Thanks. 👍👍

Actually, the notes are G, Bb, Db and Eb, which means it's an Eb7 chord.
www.scales-chords.com/findnotes_en.php?n1=G&n2=&n3=&n4=Bb&n5=Db&n6=Eb
@@Communitis I think it’s a C instead of Db. Just checked on keyboard.

Great video. thank you for sharing your project.
Beyond impressed. Sounds amazing!
I've seen this in a bluegrass concert in Tennessee at a station before. Really good for a musical performance.
Extremely well made, and well explained.
Thanks for sharing all that information that was very kind of you and appreciate it
😎👍Hey this is what I've been looking for my project. I appreciate your skills and attention to detail
You're like the Mr. Rogers of whistles. 👍
This is fantastic I wish I had the skills to build it. I would just pay someone like you to make it for me. Thank you so much for the video.

That is so cool. Looks like a log of work but you did a real nice job.😮😮😮😀😀😀😎
I enjoyed this!!!
Great! Thanks for sharing. My son is going to be very happy to build this.

Greatest video on RUclips!
Sounds really good....Love it!I want to make one with just the PVC and not the bellows so I can sound it with the air system on my truck.
Super project. Great instructions on Kindle - handy too.
I like your project, very nice
Glad you like it!
Love your video ty for showing us how to make it!
Very Clever SR,thanks for posting
Thank you..From Chile (Antofagasta)
Impressive.
Great video tutorial.
Glad you liked it!
Great video, I made the train whistle, now I will make this one. Thank you!
I would love to see how you made the inside of whistle.
The book with construction details is available on Amazon
This is really neat
Class job i hope to make one with my two boys
Ken, this is just way too fun. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you "Dadaji" (grand pa) for making this lovely toy..😍🙏
Cool good job

Now I know how to piss off my neighbors. BRB, gonna build one
Obrigado!!!
wow! that sounds pretty good!
That looks like it'd make a great adordian.
Great video. Love these kind of projects. Do you sell them?
No. Anything that has moving parts would probably require a warranty.
If you accidentally sand the wooden plug too much a thin layer of silicone caulk on the plug will not only hold it in place, but make it air tight
So cool !!!! Makes me wanna try it out to
Incredible job thanks for sharing :)
Nice project .
Note to young kids notice how he told how to make it w/o using the f word
Ok boomer
Frame?
I wonder if some small railroad vehicles actually used whistle systems like that
It would be nice to see more about how those springs are held in place on the inside.
There are stubs made from wood dowel on the top and the bottom. The stubs are inserted into each end of the spring
Included in the Kindle plans, 1/2 in. dowels hold them in place.
THANK YOU THAT WAS FUN.

Where in the world would you get Bellows cloth in the year 2022 I thought that went out a date in 1922
I used common drapery blackout material

awesome project! i'm going to embark on a lower toned ship version - air driven for my car. are the tubes tuned by volume or length and volume sir? xx

thanks. great video. :)

Them guy's at duck dynasty are mad . But we knew that already ; -)
how do make the bellows train whistle sound like that

Player Piano supply. There used to be one in Witchita KS.

Understood but the bellows cloth from a player piano or wind organ would be light years better.
What lengths did you cut the pipes?
Please read the written narrative attached to the you tube
How did you arrive at 3/4 “ for the pipe diameter?
I happened to have some on hand
Dagnabbit!!

I appreciate the input but the whistle was just made as a novelty and therefore s simple as possible
