The album and single do not seem to be available digitally. However, you can still buy the soundtrack album on various sites, such as Amazon etc. The single itself was only released promotionally (why, I don't know... should have won an Oscar for Best Song), again, you can find the promotional cds on various sites but usually on eBay
The song was co-written and co-produced by kd lang and Rick Nowels for the film Anywhere But Here.
Both the film and soundtrack were released in 1999, though information I've read suggested that this video was not aired until 2001, I'm not sure how correct that is.

Heard this song at 2am in a 24-hour CVS in 2002. Been a favorite ever since.
This is one of the songs that after you break up you say I could I just leave and go anywhere but here.

I recently just found the soundtrack to "Anywhere But Here" on CD at one of my local thrift stores for just a dollar. It looks like it had never been played. 😊
I first heard this song years ago when it used to play overhead at my retail job. I immediately fell in love with it. Years later, still golden.

This is in my opinion one of the greatest songs of all time and sadly the only place i get to hear it is in the grocery store on one of those one size fits all audio loops,how this never saw mass release i'll never know.
Story: so I loved this song so much after seeing the movie, and I asked my mom to look for a kd lang cd when we went to the library, she said, "Emily, you know I think she's a lesbian?". Lol I was like 9, I couldn't have cared less, it was a beautiful song lol.

I generally like rap and some rock n roll and a few others but I actually like this song. There's something about the beat and the meaning behind the song that I like.
I know exactly what you mean. This song has a great beat but it really makes you think cause the lyrics are real and deep very relatable.
I agree. I think the lyrics are something that just about anybody can relate to. The background music is incredibly simple and the melody is oddly simple too yet dynamic at the same time. I think KD Lang with her vocals really know how to tug at heart stings too. She can really sing the note and know JUST how long to drag it to make us love what we just heard without over extending or over running the beautiful note and tone that she gives us.
I love KD Lang. What a beautiful voice and a beautiful person.

Finally I found the song that's crawled into my heart! This song always chimes in above at work (grocery store) and I can't help but hum it while I'm at the register! People find me weird for doing it, but it seems this song has headed to the "elevator music" genre, which is disappointing. Good shit though!
Yes. In 1999, I heard this often in an independent grocery store in Bettendorf, Iowa, that has since closed. It's odd how music is still "released" through grocery stores. "Not Where It's At" by Del Amitri, comes to mind.

I started working at Wal-Mart in 2005, and I first heard it on their loudspeaker radio (something that you don't hear anymore), and I couldn't make out any of the words for a long time, but when I finally found out the title, I was ecstatic! I bought the soundtrack album later in 2006 or 2007. It's a real shame this song is so hard to find outside owning the CD - it's a fantastic song!

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful lyrics and music. I was at the CVS and it stopped me in my tracks. I had no clue. I searched, I Googled, one thing led to another...I ended up here. Powerful, pure, dreamy and lush. Awesome voice and awesome piece of music. I takes me back to somewhere I've never been.

I saw this video as it was being filmed, on a Wednesday afternoon in the Summer of 1999 almost at the exact location at the :57 point in the video with the sand dune in the distance. This is at the Ventura/ LA County Line. I was going north and the car she's driving was going south with a huge filming truck alongside her. I asked the girl at the production scene at the side of the road what was going on and she said it was going to be a kd Lang video, she said the name of the song is Anywhere but Here! It's a great song, and what a great voice.

I worked at Walgreens in the early 2000s and LOVED this song when their Muzak system played it. I've spent all day searching RUclips and the interwebs and FINALLY FOUND IT.

WOW!!!!! just heard this for the first time on 1-4-14. Had to stop and listen to it in a store. It sounded like K.D. Lang and I listened to the verse. I typed it in at RUclips and here I am . Love the tune and it is a part of my mantra now. I have just lost 120 pounds so far and I am in the process of a divorce (not brought on by the weight loss. I am also becoming a writer with a nice following of friends that encourage me. Thank you K.D. Lang. You have been an inspiration throughout my years and your voice is always nice to hear.
glad you found it dude, I heard it at my job, i missed it the first time. But the second time I took a 30ft ladder and used an app called shazam to get it. I work in a huge warehouse

The soundtrack cd is out there, but the title track was not released as a single, except for promotion. It's not available digitally, just as a cd.

I have such fond memories of driving from California to Colorado to see my family with my boyfriend Jack, listening all the way to K.D. and Patsy Kline with the desert vistas courting us through the windshield. Simpler and sweet times not so long ago.

I so love this song I had no idea it was written for the movie Anywhere But Here(which is also one of my favorite movies) but the song fits so perfectly well with the movie and yes like everyone else I heard for the first time while out shopping today

The first time I heard this song was when I was a cashier in a grocery store (it was part of the loop of songs). It always made me laugh and cheered me up because it rang so true in that environment. Thankfully I don't work there anymore but I still love the song, haha.

i worked at Regal Cinemas when this movie came out in 1999. I loved, got a bunch of promotional stuff we had lying around the theatre. If i remember correctly this KD song was on the theatre soundtrack at that time. I now only ever hear it at Publix from time to time. I have to mosh by the fish sticks.
