    Yes, the 70s and 80s were the golden-days of women's gymnastics. Thankfully, rhythmic gymnasts still demonstrate the beautiful, ballet-trained lines and gracefulness that the women of standard gymnastics used to display. Thanks for giving us a nice trip down Memory Lane!

      Yes, too bad RG killed the artistic side of the sports as well since the code, as with the current AG code, values difficulty over artistry.

    I also believe the gymnasts from back in the day are underappreciated for the skills they were doing. A lot has been made of modern gymnasts and saying 'no one has ever done x y z' and so forth - but the equipment has changed, like a sprung floor. When I watch Nadia or Kim or any of these old school gymnasts, on unsprung floors and less responsive beams, there's no doubt that generation would be on par or perhaps dominating today's competition as they did in their era. Part of me wishes the equipment would stay the same so things could be compared, but more than that, I wish the equipment of today was available to the gymnasts back then. I would really like to see Silivas next to Biles on the Rio floor, for example. I always say that gymnasts are the best pure athletes on the planet. These old school gymnasts never get the credit they deserve. To do what they did, sans springs, is really impressive. And the "inverted" work on beam - it needs to come back. It's incredibly impressive.

    • @thesovgc
      @thesovgc  Год назад +12

      I think a lot of people don't realize that when it comes to beam and floor, crazy things were bring done in the 80s (with less than ideal equipment) and 90s. And the Code literally REQUIRED originality. I don't think people understand how important that is. It's why gymnastics has lost its personality nowadays and the majority of the routines seem cookie cutter and interchangeable, regardless of one's D score. Thirty years ago, gymnastics routines were evaluated in a "big picture" sort of way. Now they are analyzed and scrutinized and each skill is picked apart to death. Now they're even trying to objectify artistry, which (in my humble opinion) is just not possible.

    Bruno Grande and Nelli Kim both said that it was their intention to get rid of "old-school Soviet gymnastics" and open the sport up to the world because the Soviet athletes were so dominant for so long. Well, ballet is an important part of Russian culture and gymnastics training has long been part of our school system and our national service program so most Russian children at least learned the basics of both. Similarly with skating, we are dominant because we have 4 million skaters to choose from. But Grande and Kim, more than anybody else are responsible for pushing the sport away from balletic artistry, in which the CCCP excelled, towards power-gymnastics. The open-ended difficulty (and its associated horrific injury list among child-athletes) is largely down to them pushing for it. Now, competitions are not about who is the better athlete but about who is fit to compete. And all the routines look the same because the athletes are looking to maximise points with the least amount of physical danger to themselves; they are all about staying fit

I do miss 80's and 90's gymnastics, and I cannot believe why to this day nobody has done anything to improve the sport, like you say, sport is supposed to get better over the years, to EVOLVE, but it seems the opposite to Gymnastics, which makes me really sad, routines now are empty and hollow from my point of view, there is no originality, no expression, the wow factor is just gone, I find myself not interested in watching competitions anymore since the 2012 olympic cycle, sad to say from a true gymnastics fan. I rather turned to Rhythmic Gymnastics to find artistry, pointed toes and leg extensions.

    I do remember hearing of a "creativity bonus" during the 86 American Cup, which gave you points for doing a rare or original element. I would kill to have that as something you could add to the DV.
    On the other hand, have you thought of making a video on Nastia Liukin? Considering her Soviet roots, she should get one (I'm biased but her 2008 pacific rim routine where she got a 9.8 (!) in execution.)

    • @thesovgc
      @thesovgc  Год назад +5

      1. I did get into more specifics about the Code but wound up cutting it for time. The Code worked under a Bonification system, where a gymnast could only max out at a 9.5 from completing the mandatory elements. The additional five tenths to attain a 10.0 SV came from 2 tenths in Originality by displaying new or rare skills, one tenth by competing an additional D element (skills were only graded from A - D until 1993 IIRC), and two tenths for virtuosity. This is known as the ODV system. Maybe I will follow up with a Part 2 getting more in depth.
      2. I was a big Nastia fan throughout her career and I have the routine in mind I've wanted to react to for years 🥰.

    Do you think a part of this problem could be dealt with if they brought back compulsories? At least, the finalists would have a minimum of artistry, control, balance and so on. What upsets me the most is the lack of artistry on FX. It's very weird to see sleazy choreography on floor. In college gymnastics it's worse, they make slutty faces, stick their tongue out, I mean... And unfortunately we also have the same few skills being performed on beam, bars and vault. It's boring and sad.

    I agree and disagree. I certainly enjoy routines from this era more, but I can see why the code needed to change. Back in the day, it seemed that judging was based on intuition and many of the rules mentioned in the code were enforced randomly at best and selectively at worst. I was watching the 1972 event finals (admittedly a bit earlier than the period you are discussing) and the scores on vault were announced almost before the gymnasts were off the mat, which is very suspect to me. At least today, you can see what deductions are being taken more clearly. If the panel makes a decision, it is actually possible to figure out after the fact why they made their choices. But at the same time nearly all routines today have low energy dance and terrible code whoring and the code isn't really doing anything to fix it, aside from downgrading skills.
    In figure skating, I think the move away from the 6.0 system arguably led to a golden period, at least for me. Competitors like Mao Asada, Kim Yuna, and Carolina Kostner have extremely good artistry. Kim was rewarded for her eccelent technique with the highest scores. Mao was rewarded for her triple axle but righly deducted for her terrible flutz. Of course today everything has gone to shit, with no objective judging on jumps and even worse judging for component scores. But an open scoring system isn't inheretly antithetical to artistry or excelent technique, it just needs to be done right.
