The Stunning Soviet Optionals From 1985 Worlds
As retaliation for the US Boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the Soviet Union and many of its Cold War Allies returned the favor and skipped the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
As is usually the case when politics overshadow sport, it was the incredible athletes who suffered the most from this decision. The Soviet Union was the best gymnastics nation in the World; two of their stars finished first and second in the all-around at the 1983 Worlds in Budapest.
Instead of captivating the eyes of the world and making a big splash the way Olga Korbut had done in 1972, the Soviet gymnasts found themselves competing at the so-called "Friendship Games" in Czechoslovakia. This meet received negative me...

Who is Your Winner? 2003 Worlds Floor Final
Просмотров 6444 месяца назад
I've moved on to Floor Exercise for my Gymnastics History series on Instagram reliving the routines of all the World and Olympic champions since 1972. The Floor Final at 2003 Worlds in Anaheim 🇺🇸 was a very interesting one, with a case potentially being made for any of the medalists to have won. All three had a 10.0 SV and were pretty even IMO. This is the order they competed in the Final, with...

Perfeita, maravilhosa, elegância, perfeita.
Bravo bravo bravo Natalia ❤
Her English is better than mine. I'm re-learning Russian.
Then USGF messed with Yurchenko at 83 American Cup…
do you have the link to Olga’s olomocu beam?
@@d4m0n97 no, it was deleted 😥. You can see some of it in my video about Mostepanova
I unlisted it, but here is the link ruclips.net/video/IXGlrfP4UlE/видео.html
Tracee & Sabrina were the truth on that mount!
I thought Kevin Brown used Wendy Bruce to take Kim Kelly’s spot. Everyone knew Betty Okino was going to Barcelona. We all knew who the Top 5 would be and Betty was in there! 🤷🏾♀️
Kind of like how figure skaters aren’t allowed to backload their programs by doing all their jumps in the last half of their their routine. I get it!
Isn’t bhs considered flight?
@@healthandwealthdiva yes, I misspoke. I meant a back salto. I also use "flight series" to mean "acrobatic series".
I've been screaming this for over 30 years. She should have won in both '91 and '92, hands down. It shouldn't have even been close.
Oh this is heaven. I remember watching this when I was 15 and being blown away by Oksana. I still have the video tape. Thanks so much for doing this - I’m going to binge watch your videos 😊
loving your vids
That’s a move that now carries her name, so I’m pretty sure she created it or perfected it. Stop looking through the lens of modern times and remember this was over 30 years ago.
She did neither (create it or perfect it), nor did she do that skill in this routine. And I am looking at it via the lens of the time.
She was so graceful and creative. Her legend will live forever.
She was an Uber technician on UB. Super textbook on form and not always lucky in competition. She gave us pain of the nation with her choreo for sure.
Well done you deserve the monetisation.you do my favourite gymnastics especially illy from 1972 to 1992
Great Gymnast from Great user 🎉🎉❤❤

I love old gymnastics
Elle est impressionnante, félicitations Shannon Miller !

The Soviets were dumb for boycotting when even the Chinese and Romanians didn't.
I thought I had knowledge…. You are amazing! I think I have an intellectual crush on you for this! 😊 But never dis ShouShou But I really like that shirt on you
Kim Zemeskal=When gymnastics lost its artful essence and just became flopping around. Woof.
Yes - I wholeheartedly agree - way better than anything current gymnasts produce!
The thing that always bothered me with Ponor were those crossed ankles! It’s one of my biggest gripes to this day no matter whom is doing it. It’s on par with sickling your feet or bad turnout in ballet. Just sloppy. She’s had better moments and to be fair it’s not a terrible routine, but meh.
Ma for sure. Better execution and higher degree of difficulty. Her form was perfect. I find jumping from bar to bar endlessly is what people do when they don’t quite have the other skills to use to increase the difficulty.
I couldn’t stand those leotards
I'm gonna get it for saying this but NO! I absolutely despise this routine. Choreographically, it's a dumbed down cutesy version of what Celestina Popa and Eugenia Golea were doing in 1987 without any of the dance sensibility. It looked so childish and ill suited to her.
Любимая гимнастка моей юности, мы почти ровесницы. Спасибо автору канала, который так подробно и с такой теплотой рассказал о замечательной гимнастке.
Такие добрые слова! Пожалуйста! 💗
Excellent 💯
Yurchenko was called the Queen of the Maidens by Asian magazines in the ‘80s. Her position in the lineup could be because of her placement in USSR Cup that year, which was often the selection for the majors. She was and still is beautiful. But her inconsistency might be the reason why they put her early in the lineups that year. At that point, Mostepanova had the most clout. Shushunova was European AA champion and USSR Cup winner. Omelianchik was the national champion with so much promise. Baraksanova was a rising star because of her Olomouc FX and Junior EC AA win. Vera did a great job as a starter. I look forward to your Baraksanova video. I remember an article written about her in 1984. In addition to the obvious fact she was a great dancer with out of the world musicality, her ability to perform the layout like full-in with great form and the tucked full-in dismount with great height were amongst the reasons why she was singled out by that magazine. She just made the full-in look effortless. In fact, I think she was the first woman who made it look effortless to me.
Heh, I low-key appreciate the quotation marks around the word Olympics. 😉
Mary Lou did double layout at the Olympics in 84 so does that not count or does Shoushunova's first double layout at the Worlds in 85 more meaningful?
@@kenmoreSF no. If I was talking about the 84 Olympics, I would mention MLR was the first to do it. I wish MLR had competed at Worlds.
So is an Onodi actually a Mosteponeva?
@@reneepeters3045 yes
Bravisima,gimnastă!❤ Gina Gogean❤ Felicitari !❤ Super !❤
First, I adore you, I wish you were my next-door neighbor, and we could hang out together. Second, while I love Shawn and Alicia, I am in complete agreement with you. Both routines were boring and stiff. They were comprised of uninspired poses in between tumbling… No dance, no artistry at all. Thank you for all the work and passion you put into your videos! 😊
Your mouth like a girl
Masses of drama and tension….must be female gymnastics. Although when Russia 🇷🇺 returns it won’t be Soviet gymnastics anymore but I am sure the insane competitiveness will soon bubble up.
I think my Omelianchik video came out in April 2024 so I was unintentionally not far off 😭
Why wouldnt she be in the gymnastics hall of fame? She was HUGE. Everyone recognizes her name that knows anything about gymnastics. I always watched her as a child. Shes Russian so is required at birth to hate the USA, but like you said dont meet your idols. And dont idolize ppl you dont even really know in the first place.
@@Janellabelle they seem to shy away from controversy. I think it literally took Ukraine being invaded for Tatiana Gutsu to be inducted (Podkopayeva and Amânar already had been a decade plus prior although they won after her).
Many times athletes like her were over trained and injured by their coaches before they could even compete. By the competition they were injured and unable to recover fully. Many times they were warned to never discuss this. This may have been why some of her competitions were shaky.
A little unrelated but if you want to see pure jealousy/rage remind Nellie Kim Nadia got that perfect ten right before she did.
one thing i found really interesting - as much as difficulty has increased over 40 years, the beam skills here are the closest to being in the same ballpark as in current competitive routines. and bars was so different that it's impossible to compare difficulty
Now this is ARTISTIC gymnastics ❤
