I read once a long tim ago that the drummer actully wrote the song, hence why its such a oddly written and accent heavy tune, If you watch and listen to some other people play it, they miss the subtle grove changes between sections, to much metronome and playing with the eyes, and not enough grove and playing with the ears.Your observations are good.

Bands like Cannibal Corpse, Gorguts (in my school anyway) and Sepultura suddenly were just a little more accepted by the "average ear". The Green Days and REM could co exist with Pestilence and Suffocation. Weird, right?
Covenant is like one of the highest selling Death Metal album of all time and many record labels started signing Death Metal bands after the success of this album.

The first time I had ever heard of Morbid Angel was when this song played on Headbangers Ball back in the early 1990s. I have never really been a fan of death metal, but there was something about this song that really captured me. It rates up there with Cradle of Filth (another band I really like).
Nope 6 string always. With a floating floyd rose w locking headstock you can take back plate off guitar unscrew the 2 bolts and get super low, use a heavier gauge string then re-level the tremolo til you're at the tuning you want. Most all Old school dm bands did this. We we're super low never used 7 strings. Listen to mortician hacked up for barbeque. All 6 string w 5 string bass.
