You just described me dude, although I was at university and it was a little earlier, 1993...fucking epic grooving to shit this good in the comfort of your own solitude....
Ah you think so too ? I didn't think it was a big deal among listeners, as the main riff is so crushing, this part may've been underappreciated. It sounds like an invocation is happening or something, it's solemn and dark at the same time.
The whole album is a Death Metal masterpiece. It gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it, and still does. The guitar solo at 2:19 is so epic that it blows my mind every time I hear this song.
Grew up in central Fla about 80miles Tampa and was and still am a HUGE death metal. There was a music shop called Aces record and tapes or some shit like that to us it was just Aces the owner Frank did A TON for the death metal scene and you'll see him thanked in like every CD from all the Tampa bands and pretty much every other big death metal band the late 80s. But before every show most of the bands would just hang at aces sometimes they would have signings but that was rare. Obituary would hang there partially because their then guitarist James Murphy worked there. We'd go down there to buy music snd bullshit with James Murphy, Chuck S from Death(R.I.P) Trevor from Obituary about what bands they were listening to. Ive seen MA 5 or 6 times all in Tampa. Same line up Trey, David, Richard and Pete. A tear just rolled down my cheek when I read that Pete "Found God"????? Damn I don't mind loosin a few from time to time its really expected but Damn it Man that guy was a machine a absolute machine. All the local guys when Trey was talked about all of them respected him as a guitarist. I hadn't seen any of this new stuff before but Trey is still one of the best at doing what he does other than that its all unfamiliar, I still love the old stuff, think it sounds better than the new stuff but im a stuck-in-my-ways, mid 40s, stubborn, I could go on for days but I wont
I remember Ross Dolan thanking some people named Frank and Ace in the sleeve of Dawn of Possession. Is that who they were talking about? Old Roadrunner/ Roadracer Records alumni.
The old stuff IS a lot better than the new stuff, it's not just because it was the music we grew up with. From a musical theory standpoint, a lot of the new stuff sounds like they take what could be really good material, run it through a meat grinder, and just lay the tracks out as it comes out of the grinder. There isn't enough thought given to structure, and not enough time given to flesh out the material to make it great. The effort to "be different" is more important than being good. That's not to say I haven't heard some good modern metal(various sub genres), it's just far and few between, and certainly not the epic metal overload from every goddamn direction the 90s were.
I met Trevor peres in Newcastle England some 20 years ago. He was the most chilled mellow dude I've ever met. So different to the way he looks in the band photos 😆
You're not wrong, and not stuck in your ways man ...this is the shit. First generation death metal bands making music that is still the best in the genre some 30 plus years later. It doesn't get any better than this.
@azforu29 YEAH man it sure was. It was Aces Records and Frank was the owner. I was about 60 miles from that side of Tampa growing up andd we had to go right by the exit on the was to where the bulk of the shows were played back then(The Ritz in Ybor City) so we'd stop and like I said James Murphy worked there and talk with him. We kinda got to know oneanother because back then not too many people took a 80mile one way trip to see those guys so they REALLY appreciated it.
