Oh don't worry, they will likely be doing that, just for now, it's easier to do A.I. in the digital world then physical world, but robotics is coming along at a decent pace and because A.I. is developing so rapidly, I suspect it will boost the pace of development of robotics that it wouldn't surprise me if we start seeing them doing many tasks over the next decade.
What is surprising and what got many by surprise is how A.I. is more of a threat to the creative sector and not manual labour, most of us expected manual labour would be the first to be at risk as creativity is harder to master, but clearly, the creative sector fears A.I. now, that it's developing so quickly in that area, does suggest that not many jobs are going to be safe from A.I. and robotics over the coming decades, which is kinda exciting and frightening at the same time in how that's going to radically change the world.

He's so right on the internet part, on the surface, you would think that would bring us together and break down barriers between us, and to a degree, it has done in some areas, but it's also made us a lot more paranoid, not as trusting and more hot-tempered, especially when it comes to politics or disagreements.
On the positive side, the internet has opened up the world to have access to pretty much any information we want at a click of a button, something I would have loved as a kid growing up in the 90's.
But if I'm honest with myself, I don't think the world has changed much, I think it's that a lot more gets exposed now thanks to the internet and smartphones that exposes a lot more corruption all around us and that is making us think things are worse than they were, where it's probably more to do that now we see the corruption whereas in the past, we didn't know any better.
With that said, the internet is braking down walls and bringing the world closer together, it's just not a smooth ride and there are some taking advantage of it to try and cause trouble and to divide us, but we should remember that the internet is still quite new in historical context, we've only had it a few short decades and we are still adapting to that new reality, and it will be interesting to see if we have grown up over the next 50-100 years.
The last part of creating a new race, sounds so much like what we could be going through over the next few decades with A.I. and robotics, and it will create a lot of fear and panic for many, especially on what we allow them to do in life, and part of that fear is that A.I. and robotics could become smarter than us and replace us, and I think if there is a risk of that happening, it's likely by centralised A.I. systems that have too much access to the world system, but if we do A.I. with robotics were each one is independent and can't be remotely controlled, that should reduce the risk a lot, as each one will be independent of the other and would not be able to remotely control the others, in other words, we treat A.I. and robotics in the same way we treat people in a democracy when it comes to balancing power and what access they have, whiles that power is more shared out, after all, a centralised A.I. system would in a sense be like a dictatorship, which could be the real fear with the online A.I. centralised models compared to open source A.I. models.
Anyway, I do like the way the video ends with something along the likes of that we are doomed lol.

It's already happening with unmanned drones fighting wars. Maybe we are all being conditioned without actually knowing it on AI as we will all likely have a lot of spare time as these robots and AI takes over more and more. Maybe the film The Terminator was a factual movie? I remember reading the book 1984 written in 1949 by George Orwell, read it off you can or watch the movie. For one thing what you are calling AI is machine learning, it's a program that relies on scraping massive amounts of data to appear like it's smart, it's nothing but a series of responses chosen from a databank, it's no different to how a chess AI works. It all relies heavily on humans feeding it the data and is in no way controlling or close to being able to control us.

Steven Fry with his usual amazing prescience, but in a time of dictators and big corporations all obsessed with the seeking of power, Steven may well be the Cassandra of our age. I agree with your formulation of the need for an international approach but would have to ask, how is that working out in efforts to tackle climate change?

The creation of an artificial intelligent will be determined, first by the mind and the intelligence of man, you see us humans have flaws and as with genetics these flaws will be unwittingly ingrained/transmitted into the programming of the AI, an Artist will see it as a means to create, a new ascetic tool, to improve painting, design and music, while the Warrior will create a new way to improve the human's capability for war , It could be used by geneticist's in the field of medicine for the benefit of mankind , or by the warriors for bio technology for the battle field, Stephen is Right! before us is the new Pandora's box we have already glimpse inside and we are aware of what could await us, but we can not cherry pick only the good things! the Question is should tip the contents out and release the good with the bad or should we put the lid back on and seal it?. The status at the moment, is that the box is being held open, but because of mans greed for wealth and power is it possible to control the outcome? I fear the prognosis is not a good one.

Ai will be like all things in that all things go through a stage of independence and self interest, but also like all things rise to a state of interdependence and integration with a greater reality. There was a stage when atoms were all alone, separate, like a universe of parts. But then there was stage after when they came together to create molecules - which housed the atoms in a greater whole. The same happened with molecules as they had their period of aloneness, only to then become proteins, and a further aloneness to then become polymers and cells, stage after stage after stage to finally become us. And WE, as separate selfish little children becoming the moral adult; who fits into their greater society just like the atom did with the molecule, to create eventually, if natures law holds up, a great super-organism of a united and harmonised world system. Ai is another link in that chain, and will no doubt go through those conditions (and remember that each succeeding stage is dependent on the last (shoulders of giants).
Another short point though is that pandoras jar was shut before the last entity in it was released - the hope fairy. This is like the act of repression, which turns away before the full story is told; I.e. to resolution. It’s when we process data fully that things come into their true place and harmony is again regained. Like Hercules in the Disney movie failing to drink the last drop of his god juice and so not fully gaining his godliness and his fall from heaven as a result.
Anyway rant over. Moral of the story is I don’t think it’s a grim story.

Fortunately also for Ai its level of intellect will be so high and achieved so fast that the problems of less intelligent creatures will be transcend fairly quickly imo. A lot of the more brutal issues in humanity is due to a lack of understanding. As Rumi says “truth lifts the heart as water refreshes thirst”. And a lot of the bloodier lessons it will of learned through our mistakes. Unfortunately we have human bad actors, which throws a wrench in there. But that’s another discussion.

AI has ruined ebay already. The descriptions of items used to tell you so much about the seller. But now most of the descriptions are all the same in the way they are written. Not a very serious issue. But an example of how AI has not improved something in my view.

The Cat’s already out of the Bag, unfortunately. I don’t think we can reign in what has already been done, the argument that AI is already sentient wages right now. Of course the problem will ultimately be Money and Greed, that’ll cause a total unwillingness to apply the common sense restrictions needed on the Technology, and we’ve already lost much of that Battle, and I don’t see us winning that War. Not trying to be a doomsayer, just applying our History and Human Nature to the issue. AI is a much much bigger threat, and will have a much bigger impact, than the Industrial Revolution.

Stephen Fry is very intelligent, and almost always has inightful thoughts on a topic. As we get closer to the supposed "singularity of technology", things are moving faster and faster. Far faster than we can create laws to protect ourselves from the developments. We're already seeing it with problems with AI and copyright. The better AI gets, the harder it's going to be to keep up. Are we heading for chaos or a new renaissance? I've got my fingers crossed, as everyone should, I think.

  • @CraigMcKee

I actually think he is wrong about the internet. First it is very naive to think that it would erase all kinds of negative human behaviors. But beyond that he misses the most important development where the internet is concerned. In fact, it's not trolls and abusers who are the biggest issue (yes they are an issue but human beings have always been good, bad, and everything in between), it's those who wield power in in our world. They employ operatives whose job it is to interfere with free speech and cooperation and all the good things Fry is talking about. The worst trolls are very likely to be paid to divide us. When issues like critical race theory and gender ideology become points of division, it suits the elites just fine. Divide and conquer. Convince people that hate speech is everywhere, and then you can justify censorship and authoritarianism.

First I remembered the movie “The Terminator”, especially the explanation they give at the beginning. We saw this in the 80s and thought “ahah, how silly”. Then I remembered the series "Westworld” with the great Anthony Hopkins. A little scarier. There are many films and fictional series that seem to predict the future and also serve to show us what it will be like, as a warning. It sounds like a conspiracy theory that is neither a theory nor a conspiracy...

Fry is an intelligent and educated man, however, he has no background in science, social science or technology - this is why he relies on regurgitating classicical myths and citing romantic authors here. Unfortunately he doesn't even understand that there always have been and still are huge debates about 'sapients/sapience' (terms he is actually misapplying here) basically what is intelligence, knowing, awareness, the brain, thinking a thought...- I aways assumed he's studied philosophy, but this video makes me wonder if he even did that. He might have useful contrubtions to some of these fields if he did some work and got properly informed, coz as I said he's bright.....
I think his young husband is putting him in these embarrassing positions around science

AI is going to happen. Whether we create the AI or the AI eventually becomes smart enough to grow itself, write new code to overwrite the code we created to stop it growing and making decisions that affect our lives. But AI is not my biggest worry, global warming and the world wide population growth will kill more than AI will. If population growth carries on there will be food shortages, places to live will decrease, medical & educational services will also be impacted, wildlife will die out as we encroach more on their natural habitats, global warming will increase and speed up. Everything we do as a species causes damage to the world we live in and I mean everything. So perhaps AI becoming aware and wiping out the human race would be a good thing. Think about it. 🤨🤔

You could argue that Pandora’s Box had already been opened when we created the computer. For a while, Turing was a hero, albeit unknown to most people. To him, in years to come, humans would say to each other, “The computer in my pocket said a most funny thing to me today….” And he was right, and I suspect the majority of us just use computers for our amusement, maybe for work, all very benign stuff. But if we move on from Turing, to the 80s when I got my ZX81, there were already documentaries on the telly about how computer developers had unleashed a ton of viruses onto computers and how businesses had gone under due to the chaos this malware caused. All before Joe Public had even heard of the internet. So Stephen may be right, but the paradigms since Bletchley Park are changing far too quickly. It’s one Pandora’s Jar after another.
