fun fact: kanye and his team worked really hard on trying to isolate the vocals from the original song, only to find out last minute that the official acapella was already released and that the version they were going to release had the "isolated" vocals
“There’s a fucking acapella? Do you know how many times we had to mix that fuckin beat and there’s an acapella?” “Yea we all got it on the laptops” Along those lines lol, p sure the end song had been mixed 75 different times
For decades, hip-hop producers would only reach for soul, funk, and disco records to chop samples.. Nobody really thought to look at EDM to make a hip-hop record out of it. Gotta respect Kanye's ear for that
Crazy how this sample is ENTIRELY vocal, especially considering it's Daft Punk. So much of Ye's whole career has been about the human voice as the ultimate instrument and it's so interesting all the ways it's popped up across his entire discog.
@@c.fernandezmurray1936 I mean even before that Vox video came out it was always a prominent theory. Voice as an instrument has always been noted as a production staple of his across his works, from the choral chants of Jesus Walks to this electronic DP sample on Graduation, to the use of autotune on 808s, to the use of vocoders on MBDTF (mainly Gorgeous and Runaway) (as well as stacking voices to create a wall of sound effect on All of the Lights) to however you want to describe the vocal treatments he uses on Yeezus and TLOP (especially for example how he uses Justin Vernon as a haunted choir in I Am a God, puts Caroline Shaw through a vocoder on FSMH Pt 2, and manipulates that weird Section 25 sample on the FML outro to sound so alien and dissonant). I think the Vox video just verified what we all theorized about his use of vocals

As a long time Daft Punk French fan, I thought it was a really easy/lazy beat and sample when I first heard this in 2008. But it's not that lazy when you think about it, it pays tribute to the amazing original and twists it just enough that it feels different. Then you add the flow, the aggressive swagger of late 2000s Kanye and you can't escape the greatness of this song. And then I became a Ye fan, despite everything he says and does. The man is just so inspired. I feel like he's a musical Salvador Dali. The end.
I never understood people who dismissed this as a lazy sample job tbh (glad you came around eventually, some never do lol), the song is so much more than the vocal sample (as integral as it is), Kanye stacks synthesizers, drums, 808s AND a keyboard bassline to fill out the low end, and Mike Dean's reverbed guitar on the outro all around the vocal sample, he really builds it up into something new.
I don’t get how anyone could be mad at Kanye for doing a vocal sample when daft punk samples the entire instrumental from Edwin Birdsong’s Cola baby. Like you can’t be against just Kanye for this
It still amazes me that Kanye, until this point in his life, didn't know about Daft Punk. This isn't a dig...his earlier output showed how wide his musical knowledge was, yet he never heard of Daft Punk. Mind blowing!
I think it was that he somehow didn’t know this song was theirs, considering years before stronger he worked with the teriyaki boyz (daft punk affiliated)
@@fakedthunder I'm not sure. Daft Punk were still almost a cool underground act at the time, and I suspect a lot of Americans didn't know much about them. Daft Punk hadn't done anything worthy of the Daft Punk name since Discovery. And yes, I get that Random Access memories was a good album, but it wasn't the DP quality we associated with them in the early years.
