Was fortunate to have heard Mr. Fox on two occasions. Once with my high school music teacher at the Philadelphia Academy of Music with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy. 1965. Hearing this brings the same sense as to how Virgil's soul comes out through the pipes. The Wanamaker organ is a national treasure. May God allow it to continue for many years to come.
Here we have one from a number of versions of this transcription, which is also to be heard 15 years later at Riverside Church - Soli Deo Gloria (1979). As with many of his performances (especially Bach), these arrangements were worked out by his assistant, Robert Hebble. The late Mr. Hebble had told me that he put it into a collection of pieces that is now way out of print. The Archer Gibson setting is very well suited for a good performance, however!
I have this Compact Disc, which is a brilliant disc apart from this track. Carlo Curley plays this on the organ of Girard College and his version is much better than this. I do love this organ and Fox's COME SWEET DEATH is a classic recording............
Carlo Curley is amazing!. I found the recording and it was stunning. I want MORE! It's really difficult to pick one from Virgil and Carlo so I'll adore BOTH! Thanks, for the track.
"Fanfares from Parsifal" and "Liebstod" take second only to Dr. Fox's "Komm' Susser Tod". Absolutely breathtaking.
AGREE WITH THAT!!!!
