In Smash Ultimate, when you move your shield around it shifts your hurtbox. If you buffer this in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the full hurtbox shift happens in 1 frame. You can also use this to avoid getting grabbed OOS / make parrying multi-hits easier. Shield Shifting has a lot of unique applications!

I had to sub for multiple reasons!
1. The intro was epic.
2. Info was straight to the point and descriptive!
3. The back to the lab again from Dexter!
4. You gave some credit of where it came from!
Speaks numbers on you as an individual and character. Subbed and notifications on dude. Thanks.
wait till they find out you can sdi with your own multihits
Whoa, I didn't expect to get jumpscared by myself in this video LOL
Excited to see more people potentially abusing this, lots of interesting ideas shown here that I need to look into making use of too 🤔
thanks for the idea!
Shanoa Jump Scare
this feels like one of those things that we could’ve known from day one but simply missed out on somehow 😂
Shield shifting has been known since day 1. This video isn't describing a new discovery, it's explaining how this thing we always knew about might be more useful than we realize.
@@AbjectPermanencesure shield shifting has been known but no one has been using it in this way for this purpose so it might as well be a new discovery lol
Bringing deeper awareness to stuff we already know and why it matters
People who played other smash games know a lot of this stuff, it's just both that there are a lot of new players with Ult and that things like this are very character dependent. I would assume most character specialists at high level know this kind of thing about their characters, it's just the average player might not.
It is not a new discovery using in that way. I’m a Link main and people on Link discord already did this 3 years ago.
Man, shielding with two buttons is seeming pretty useful but will definitely take a hot second to get used to.
Or shield and b
That's still shielding with two buttons lmao
@@tyler94flynn much easier than shielding with both triggers, oof.
@glhf5525 oh yeah 🤣
I already made ZL and L both as shield. So this is will be a big boon for me. But for gamecube controller users.. oof.
The fact that rob is so big that instead of shifting away he has to push enemies away is hilarious.
This is extremely useful for Link as his boomerang practically autospaces the move for him. I made a video on it on Twitter 3 years ago and has been implemented by several strong Link players already. One thing I mentioned in that video is how you can option select optimal DI if they have quick enough OoS. A great example is Link vs. G&W where an unspaced boomerang -> shield shift away lets you avoid grab and make you avoid any follow-up if they go for an Up B.
Loving this series so far. Looking forward to the next episode!
for any of the Melee heads, this works in Melee too you just buffer the shield tilt without holding both triggers (rolls don't buffer in that game) it can make Marth impossible to grab for some characters
I didn't know Diddy Kong's forward smash was so beautifully animated too!
Haha, so many good animations in Smash, slowing down all of them is amazing.
This actually seems....really useful. Especially since I main Yink and those options were pointed out right to me 👀
Shout outs to the long lost soldier, ShanoaSSB. What a chad.
It's Minecart into down-air
god no please
Wait, Steve can shield shift?
Who cares. No one wants to play against him or watch people play him.
@@slamkam07
As it turns out, you don't have a choice.
@@dogyX3
I would be really surprised if he did, given his "animations".
This seems pretty big, ngl. I'll try to incorporate this into my play
Techmas once again not disappointing. Great work Gimr
Good thing Donkey Kong's able to DSC Up-B every move shown in the beginning!
This is actually super cool, insanely simple, and seems really damn effective
Thanks for watching, see ya tomorrow for Day 4! Get ya merch here: spif.space/gimr
Godspeed🫡
I AM DEVASTATED. there is exactly 1 character in the game that cannot do this. my main, YOSHI.
You should stop busy bragging, it's starting to sound too pathetic...
Ahh I never realized that shield tilting shifts your hurtbox, but it makes sense! Buffering it to dodge a grab is a crazy bait
This is so good wth. I hate getting shield grabbed when going on the offense. I am definetely utilizing this. Unpunished point blank boomerang is crazy. Thanks GiMR👏👏👏
If only this tech worked on pac-man's grab 💀
The Pac is Maning up
Pac God perserveres
awesome! glad you're helping make this be more widely known. @JforJonas did a video on Link shield shifting after boomerang a while ago, but don't think too many people know about this tech generally.
yeah someone just pointed it out to be on twitter. Just gave him a shout out!
@@GimR And thanks a lot for that! A pinned comment or link in the description would also be awesome as I go into even more benefits from this tech as well.
I think this is the most interesting tech seen in Techmas, because in my opinion it can lead to realistic situations outside competitive, like playing with your cousin and surprising them with this tech because it isn't even that hard
I always noticed you could move your shield around in all the Smash games, but never knew if it actually did anything.
In melee it's really important because it's easier to get shield poked
but I'm really surprised to see how significant it can be in Ultimate!!!
It's meant as a way to prevent shield poking. Just because you have a shield up, doesn't mean you can't still be hit. If your foot is outside of your shield bubble, and your opponent hits your foot without hitting your shield, it will count as a hit. Shield shifting would allow you to move your shield to cover your foot to prevent that scenario. This was super important in Melee when many characters had terrible shields that left large parts of their bodies exposed.
Its used for shield pokes BUT also shifting your sheild to allow an approaching aerial to hit it earlier will allow you to exit shield stun and react sooner
This one seems like it could be one of the most impactful things to this game’s competitive scene and its just one of the short videos 😂
simple yet effective👌
I may have found another variation of this, that being holding the opposite direction during a move so your character turns around. Roy, for example, seems to benefit more from this as his feet move out of the way and his shield hold doesn’t shift him much.
I think that does add one frame of turnaround before your shield comes out, so technically 1 frame less safe
But probably still worth it for many chars, especially if you have a good bair OOS
This is what I was hoping for Gimr. I talked about how melee always wanted to evolve their game. You came just in time and I appreciate you providing new applications for players on how they can mix up some of the neutral game and additional interactions. Thanks for your contribution to the community
This was sick. Really enjoying the series!
Let's see what we get today, thank you Gimr for providing these, I think that this is a great way to add depth to the game and make it in some cases better for everyone. Unless it has anything to do with Steve.
😐
This stech works with almost everyone but Steve lol
Little did he know lmao
@@igirjei3717What happened?
Simple yet so incredibly effective. Thank you for showing off this tech
So now we have DI before getting hit, that's crazy.
This will definitely elevate my barely safe Little Mac Attacks!
Really useful, thank you; and kinda combos into your Parry Shifting video at the end!!
crazy that we're beating paper with rock lol
Wow that's really great lmao
Love this video!
"Some characters move very little, and others move A LOT"
And then there's Mr. Game and Watch.
wait, this is nuts
You can do this against falcon's side b to make it way less safe on shield and shield grab it everytime
GimR coming back with that juicy mix of entertainment and viability
This is great for Kazuya, thank you
Meanwhile yoshi is just an egg lmao
Thanks for finding this shit out because it happens so often just playing alone!!! It’s crazy how many grabs you miss when you right in somebody’s face
this one's cool! not meta breaking but a nice little optimization, there's really no reason not to implement it in situations where you would shield anyways
This feels legitimately useful
It's so obvious it's incredible this hasnt been explored more by this point.
I remember playing with jiggling shields early in the game and it just kind of got forgotten about
Thats the best so far
I don't play anymore but watching the new tech is still neat ❤
I love the ad at the beginning, it's a perfect parody
Shift’s about to hit the fans
Finally an interesting reason to use shield shifting. “Safe on shield”s back on the menu for many
The GIMZ always WINZ
Might use this
This will definitely be useful with lots of practice. I know a lot of people like to argue that tech isnt that important in this game and while that may be somewhat true you can’t deny this is gonna be pretty useful
"Universal" Yoshi mains on suicide watch.
This is super interesting! I could see this getting lots of use very quickly. Great work GimZ
Teachmas actually making me better
a hoodie in the shower is diabolical
Definitely gonna have to rework my controls to optimize all these shield techs
This literally looks like magic.
Like, when someone goes “no way that hit!!” But if you know the actual janky size of that specific hit box, then it’s understandable.
Now… you could be in a ditto match, be both shielding at the same time, take turns grabbing, and only one actually works.
Grimey, I kinda like it though
This is absolutely broken... You could hug your opponent and aggressively pressure them. Match-up dependent though.
This is cool !!
ooh i like this one
that's actually huge
He's giving out ALL OUR SECRETS FUHHH
I love that as a very new player, I am astonished by the fact I didnt know you could double shield to shift it around, and as a G&W main Im completely exasperated that this really means nothing for my main. God why am I doing this to myself I should really pick a different character aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Tweek watching this for sure
I'll never be good enough to do one frame stuff. Ultimate still has so much we haven't learned about yet, just like with every Smash.
But you can do this. Holding 2 shield buttons so you don't roll or spotdodge, (when you're done attacking or whatever) and hold direction (like left in the video) to shift that way.
Buffered after your attack, etc.
@@PrestoJacobson I don't understand the buffer system.
Ok this one might actually change the meta
So good for gnw
I always thought I was grabbing the shield
thanks esam
this is cool
LMFAO the beginning is a banger
How good is Palutena’s hurtbox shifting during this? I want to practice it because she relies a lot on falling aerials and if she could do them even safer on shield that would be incredible
Good way to get shieldpoked too !
yoo christmas indeed, this is tech i can handle on my level of play
I’ve been doing this for over a year… why did you tell them!?!?!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Can we do aerials into shield shifting? In the video, Gimr only shows grounded moves into shield shifting.
I wonder if this is going to be disproportionally helpful to those with tether grabs, as they can use it to their benefit but largely ignore it if used against them
As a fox enjoyer with a bowser main friend, 1:24 was all too familiar to me
The real Christmas present isnt the techs coming each day, it's discovering if it could actually apply to your poor low/mid tiers main..!
Yoshi mains in shambles (?)
Yoshi mains never get shield poked. That's the big benefit of his shield. Also, Yoshi's fmash already pulls back so far to avoid hits. You can just jab 1 into fsmash.
Well now that's cool.
Most shieldgrabs are 10 frames, so a -9 frame move on shield is now safe?
this is just head movement in boxing
this isn’t game changing to me at least but this is another whiff punish option that adds more depth to the game very cool!
hopefully it helps with pichu and those giant ears
Does Yoshi shield shift? Like his shield does not shift, but does he shift inside the egg ?
Cauz, they might have implemented an animation for the egg and disabled the poke, but I am curious about the character inside the egg
watching this as if i don't play yoshi
Pretty good tip
Please, a sweatshirt with a slightly bigger logo 🙏
Yink buffs let's go
*Crys in yoshi😢
3ero
Espero que la siguiente tech este mas buena que la anterior 👍🏻
bad day to main yoshi
Hmmmm, maybe I could try this with Mario aerials, considering bair it's the most used on neutral
Looks at Hero frame data... good tech
Yuhh
Finally, a nerf to shielding
I wish I knew this sooner! I hate shield grabbers.
My pt thanks you😂 squirtle gonna go stupid off this.
*cries in Yoshi 😭
