I just spent 10 minutes cleaning up my cola mess. Thanks alot. When you were pulling off the Texas burgers and you said that you almost lost El Paso. I laughed my butt off. Unfortunately I was taking a drink of cola at the same time!!! Great vid. Thank you.
Thanks for the video, it was quite helpful. Would probably also help if you showed the cleaning process and comment on how feasible this as an alternative to a real charcoal grill, given that you have to insert and remove the tray before each grilling. Appreciate your feedback!
Cleaning I just lift out the tray and dump the ashes. If any ashes got into the gas grill, I blow them out with some compressed air. It is just fine for high temp charcoal grilling but you don't have much control over temprerature since the gas grill is not very air tight. Not a replacement for a charcoal grill, but an alternative if you just want to grill something without buying a separate grill. Thanks for the question.
@@RashleysBorderQue once you actually light the charcoal's obviously turn off the gas burners and then you can put a thin drip pan on top of the burners so no ash goes in the holes.
once you actually light the charcoal's obviously turn off the gas burners and then you can put a thin drip pan on top of the burners so no ash goes in the holes. The main issue I see with this is there is no way to shut the fire down Charcoal will just continue to burn until they are gone and you have no control of the fire there is no vents to open or close because of the cart design.
@@wallyj2000 agreed, you can’t shut the charcoal fire “off”, but you can’t do that with a real charcoal grill either. To save space in your yard, yet still have the option for a great charcoal tasting meal, this is a great option in my opinion.
Just ordered a Napoleon Prestige P500. Hope I like it. I got the rear roast, etc, burner, but not the side burner. Is the side burner worth it. My present BBQ has one, but I have never used it. I could change my mind and get the side burner, but I just wonder if it makes a difference to seer steaks on it? Thanks Rick
If you like gas grills you should love it. I have had good luck with the sear burner and have even used it to fry foods in a skillet over the burner. It is a personal call though. Let me know how it works out for you. Thanks for watching.
thank you for this. this was very helpful. i have a question about the ashes. The tray has holes. Do the ashes fall on the burners and are the ashes easy to clean?
Cleaning was a non issue. The drippings are burnt up or absorbed by the coals and any ash that dropped into the grill is easily blown out with air. Flavor bars are are your choice. I wanted the flames to be able to reach the charcoal. I don't have the grill anymore so can't confirm, but I believe you can leave them in if you prefer and still fit the charcoal tray above them. The tray does not rest on the burners or the flavor bars it sits on a ledge that keeps it above them. Thanks for the question.
When doing a review you should also show the cleanup as this is the most important step. We all assume it will cook burgers and corn but we need to know whether ashes went all over your gas grill inside and what it was like to clean up that mess. Otherwise nice review.
Since the tray has holes in the bottom, my guess is the ashes make a mess inside the gas grill and is a PITA to clean up. There's a universal charcoal tray out there that looks like a much cleaner option.
@@tanjab.8665 I haven't tried it yet but was thinking about laying the tray on top of the burner covers (minus the covers in between burners) so that the ash wouldn't get on the burner tubes. That's a pretty cool product for the Napoleon Prestige and I've also seen that TX press at HEB, but wasn't sure how burgers would hold up. Well, got that question answered, so I will be making a trip to HEB. Great vid and review!
I was surprised at how they held together. I think the trick is to let them cook on side one as long as you can before trying to flip. Only one tried to break out of the 4. Hey Randy I'm looking to buy that grill are you really satisfied with the performance ? That smoking tray really works that good ? Spending $2000. on a grill is a big step for me so i would appreciate any helpful comments to aid my purchase
Oh man I hate to guide you into something you may like or may not. All I can say is if you want a gas grill and from time to time you want to add charcoal and/or smoke flavor it works pretty good. Nothing can give smoke flavor like a smoker, but having this tray in the gas grill give the versatility to use gas, charcoal, wood chunks, and to grill, slow cook, sear, rotisserie, all in one pit. I really enjoyed cooking on it, but it was a demo and went back to the dealer last week. I had just too many pits on the patio and am trying to make room and keep the wife happy.
I just tried the Charcoal Tray on my new Prestige Pro 500 to cook pizzas. It really worked great to have 1 side charcoal and the other side gas. Easy to set up and light the charcoals and the smoker adds a nice flavor. Be careful to cook safely away from your house and on flame proof flooring (not a gas grill anymore). I woke up in the middle of the night realizing I cooked on my wooden deck and went to bed with the coals still hot. Luckily no issues this time other than getting out of bed to check.

It did a great job of grilling and gave a little smoke flavor that you can’t get with gas alone. The grill has too many smoke leaks to truly smoke though. Having said that, it IS a way to get charcoal grilled taste from your gas grill.

Thanks for the question. No, I never use lighter fluid. When I had the Napoleon I would put my charcoal in the tray and then light the propane burners on that side until the charcoal was lit. Then turn out the propane burners and finish the cook with charcoal. The burners light the charcoal quite nicely without the need for lighter fluid.
Lots of reasons. Sometimes I would use the propane to start the charcoal, sometimes i would use the propane heat to cook and have the charcoal and wood chips just to add flavor, sometimes I would cook with only charcoal. Thanks for the question.
