    The ''holes'' in the attic are for summer cooling. They are a way of taking advantage of
    ''the chimney effect''. The air pressure on the leeward side of the house is always slightly lower than the windward side so the hot air is sucked out of the loft. No comment on how effective they are but they should work and are free. Keep them open in the summer and closed in the winter.

    I'm a newby to your channel, and am seriously considering retiring to Bulgaria. That is an amazing property! Did you give a shout-out to your realtor somewhere? This is the exact type of property I'm looking for. I live in a tiny house in the United States right now which costs more than a much bigger property with land in Bulgaria! The second level of that property is really great and as long as it's well insulated and there's a source of heat and running water anyone can live comfortably in this type of home in this condition. There's a channel in the United States called "Doug and Stacy" and they have a beautiful off grid location that they built themselves but the point that I wanted to make is they have a composting toilet that they talk about. And of course I know from experience that you can live perfectly without a fancy shower or bath right away. With this in mind, as long as you don't freeze to death in the winter and you have plenty of drinking water and a place to poo you can dive into these types of properties and start renovating one room at a time!! I can't wait to watch your other videos. Thank you for sharing.

      Hey Mark. Our place is near Troyan, around the Balkans.
      Unfortunately it is hard to find a place. We literally drove all across Bulgaria trying to find places, checking out villages etc, speaking to locals. That's how we found our place, it was not advertised for sale anywhere at all, but a local person took us to the seller.
      If you don't speak Bulgarian it will be difficult to do it like that. There are estate agents but then you'll pay more fees.

Even when that building was at it's prime it was a pieced together pile of junk hardly worth the animals that were kept there. sorry, but, you'd be money ahead to clear that mess out of there and have a prefab brought in. Nice plot of land, congratulations!A bit of advice! Don't bother with renovating the old buildings, even the house itself. Just get planning permission and build new one , single storey, the refurbishment may actually cost you more! And old house always will be old!
    I just got similar investment for same amount of money, two month ago.
    The old house went down in two days. Bear in mind quality of old houses is not the same like in UK. And Bulgaria is in a earthquake zone! Good luck!Another point, position of the house is awkward!

      @@garyjackman4363 thank you! Yes it was easy before Brexit. Stay as long as you want and buy what you want. Now for example, as I'm British, I can't own land. So legally the land belongs to Anna 😂 But we share the house. She might start changing me for the apples!.
      There may be other ways around it but as far as I'm aware it's either by EU citizenship (some with Irish heritage get an Irish passport to open the door), or retirement with a suitable pension. Check 'Our Derelict Dream' on RUclips they are quite knowledgeable.

    Is the language any problem for you? USA

    • @nibbletouch7566
      @nibbletouch7566  2 года назад

      Like most places, if you are in the bigger towns and cities it's generally no problem whatsoever, so many residents and workers speak English. Obviously you'll find exceptions sometimes. When you get to the villages it can be a bit harder language wise. The older residents don't generally speak English. Some do, some have broken English too. But then you may go to a small shop in a remote village and the owner starts talking to you in perfect English. So you never know 😁. If you're living here trying to find contractors etc you'd need to be able to communicate well, at least via a Bulgarian bi lingual friend. Anna is Bulgarian, so for us, it's not a problem. Except it means sometimes she has to do all the talking with people which may be annoying for her.

    People are friendly once they know you
    On the downside
    The villages are slowly being depopulated
    Their residents are getting old
    There isn’t much to do and public transport is pretty space to non existent in many places
