Oh my goodness!! I'm Hungarian and I just heard you say that sour cream is more middle eastern! It is old world Hungarian! It is traditional! My father and his parents and their parents.... all of our recipes come passed down and there are soooooo many with sour cream! Even our kifli are made with sour cream (that's why our kifli will forever be better than the polish kolacky). Maybe different areas of Hungary are different.

Your mom was right about the sour cream also, an alternative cu umber salad...sweat cucumbers with salt, then squeeze water out mix sour cream, vinegar, sugar,add fresh dill if desired,mix well refrigerate overnite....it is very yummy
