I was raised a maximalist. I disliked having so much stuff, especially in storage. I was always worried about redecorating when I didn’t have the talent or patience for it. Minimalism has really helped calm me down and make me happy to be at home. I’m even a minimalist in my classroom. I’m excited about your baby girl’s arrival! Please keep us posted!! :) :) Hugs!
The best thing I did was ditch instagram, too many ads and hate on there. I find most of the minimalism didn't work videos are by people who think minimalism is living with 50 items, well yeah anything taken to the extreme doesn't work. Your take on minimalism is a sensible one for sure.
Well said , thank you for reminding me.
Moving so often throughout my 20s made me a minimalist. I'm so happy with the items that I have, and that's it.
I may never be a true minimalist (I have crow brain😂) but the peace I find in the "underconsumption" (aka normal consumption) videos is so real. I love seeing how life can be simple and less consumable
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Girl I know you feel, you just want to keep them safe and feel you have to get so much. when you have a baby it does get hard to stay minimal but not impossible. :)
Thank you for this video and for inspiration 💚 Happy Monday ☀️
Thanks Elin, I can so relate to this video! I feel like social media is so advertisement heavy! I've fallen into the trap of subscribing to some influences who stir up purchasing desires in me, and it's easy to be lured away from minimalism, to feel cooler/confident/successful/complete. Thank you for the reminders! And I hope all goes well with your birth! Take care!
I think you can be a maximalist in style and minimalist in possessions. I don’t have a lot of stuff but I like the maximalist style.
I love your content! It inspires me to make my home about the people in it, not the things.
I completely agree!
Aw. Love that!
I hope these last days and weeks of your pregnancy go smoothly. ❤️ Maximalism as a design trend definitely seems to be trending, and for me it’s as impractical as extreme minimalism as a design trend. But most people I see IRL are neither minimalists not maximalists - most people just have a ton of junk because they buy too much and keep it all. Maximalism and collecting are about curating and displaying pieces thoughtfully IMO, not buying everything that catches your eye and shoving into storage when it’s no longer exciting. Normalizing overconsumption is one of the worst things about social media. But I’m getting old enough that I can’t be bothered with trends, and if a company bombards me with ads I’m not going to buy from them (and I will unsubscribe if I can).
I feel like what we buy changes - 10-15 years ago it was clothes, skincare and makeup and now it’s more about organizing products (maybe because of the pandemic we care more about our homes)
The change in personal consumption trends could also be due to aging.
I just completed another round of decluttering (and I've been a minimalist for 10 years now!). I got rid of the more expensive pieces that I've been hanging on to in favor of seeing empty drawers and shelves! I just read (or heard) a comment here online that "Our homes aren't storage units!" and that got me to thinking! How many "nice" things was I hanging onto, but haven't used in years? The only things I want to store are Christmas deccies (and I've seriously downsized those too!). Otherwise, if I don't have a place for an item to be seen or used in my home, I don't need to keep stashed in a cabinet somewhere!
It makes me sad to see that maximalism is trending when we are already over-consuming and creating huge waste problems. Apart from that, many people are feeling financial stress and overwhelm due to cluttered homes. I believe it is likely that these trends are created by those that profit from our consumption to counter the drop in sales due to the minimalism trend. Unfortunately, the things that bring greater joy, contentment and an easier life are things that cannot be bought such as greater connection to family, friends, the community and the natural world. It is great to hear that you are in your final month of pregnancy. I wish you all the best for the birth of your baby and upcoming parenthood.
Hope you have a happy and healthy labour and a lovely little one to spoil and cherish
I have to agree I’m noticing a lot more reference or decor styles trending to Maximalism. And although as a minimalist, I have adopted some of the concepts of decor such as gallery wall and multiple plants as it brings me joy I still consider myself a minimalist. I think it would be nice for all of us to emphasize we can have some maximalist concepts and still be a minimalist. It’s all about finding the happy medium. Great video keep up the good work!
❤ Thanks Elin. I am endeavouring to keep up and curate my minimalism journey. Keep refining. Yes I sometimes slip up and buy stuff but I know & have felt the benefits of less is more. Recognising & seeing the wood from the trees is key. Weeding our the dross and elevating what is important. ❤
another great video! i love your balanced perspective.
Really really love this Clip ! U are so one the point !
so nice of you making this video for us so close to a birth of a child 🫶🫶 God bless you and your birth, that all goes well and as joyable and pleasant for you as possible 🙏🙏🙏 you gonna be a great mum 🤗🙋🏼♀️🎉🥂
I agree . . .advertising is way worse now than ever before and definitely since just 10 years ago or even 6 years ago.
Minimalism is really not something people seem to care about at all. . it was like a trend a few years ago and I wonder how many people have stuck with it in the past five years. With me, as a minimalist for 18 years, it was really really unheard of then and people laughed at me and thought it was a bit crazy but that is okay. I didn't mind being my own person. I was so glad when more and more people came out saying how getting rid of stuff helped them feel free. There really are so many benefits. I do see more people claiming maximalism like it is a good thing and it is really kinda sickening to my belly to hear. . .like why do they feel happy about that.
I think minimalism will come and go in waves as it has the past 10 years. I just hope more people figure out how to stick with it. I know of a few people who proclaimed minimalism 8 years ago that now say "It didn't work for them." I think their reason, from what they stated to me, was their family was growing and expanding and it became stressful for them to keep up with it, which doesn't make sense because I find it so easy to keep up with and harder if I have more stuff (and my kids are older than their kids). :: shrugs :: I don't know.
Great talk.
Great video! This year I have aimed to focus on simplicity, less, contentment, healthy living, and being present. This video gave lots of great suggestions! Thank you ❤
I definitely think that our social media has changed and has headed into full assault with advertising. If I scroll through my facebook page, I bet I will find a "sponsored ad" within the first 10 posts. I just popped onto my page and the first 6 posts, two were ads from NOTHIN G I have even looked at online, nor have I talked about these companies or products. I have gotten rid of so much. I know I could do better but I am satisfied right now and will continue to go through things. I do have an excessive amount of supplies for cross stitch, but I love the hobby. I am trying to keep what I will use, but I do think I collect a little too much with it. Thank you for your input. I find your videos very thought provoking. I am anxiously awaiting the video where you announce the birth of your baby!
I agree, we own so much useless stuff!
This was quite an inspiring video. I haven't even started to declutter. But I can attest to the fact that clutter and maximalism is not the way to go. So stressful.
What you are saying starting at around 8:15 makes so much sense. Your home is beautiful so keep doing what you are doing. When the baby comes it will be that much more difficult to stay on track.
wow I have to say half of the way companies get you seems to be the things that annoy me. Such as if I am constantly being bombarded with emails or texts I am not going to interact with a company because it seems trashy. If I am constantly seeing sponsorship deals from the same company I am wondering how bad is the product that they are trying to get every influencer on board. I'm also the type of person to never go see a movie when it first airs and to not watch a tv show if everyone is talking about it. Maybe my brains advertising broken
lol i am the same. i hate the agressive advertising. it is one more reason for me why i wouldn't buy it
Think that having less stuff is peaceful. Good for mental health, moving if you have to do that a lot, & keeping a tidy space. Saves money too.
Interesting comment about trends. I went into my favourite pyjama shop today (yes, I'm really into pyjamas). But I noticed how trendy the women's and girls ones were (lots of new ones from the last time I went in) and the mens and boys ones were just the ones that had been there for the past year or so. So trends seem to be so focussed on women!
If you're going to be a maximalist, get stuff from thrift shops so it doesn't go in a landfill. If you are having a baby, get baby things at a thrift shop because the baby will grow up so fast and you'll have all this baby stuff that you will just get rid of. Babies do not need much, kids do not need much. Save the money and put it into the child's college fund.
When I had my daughter, I was able to get a lot of things second-hand. When we didn't need them anymore, I was able to give to other mamas and donate most of it.
Smart!
Thank you for the inspiration this is just what I needed ❤
Very good video and an important message!
😊😊😊
Another very big reason for difficulty paring down our possessions is that charities are filled with our “stuff” and don’t want any more!!!!
Where are you seeing charities stop accepting donations of used goods?
@@username00009 Many charities in my area have become very selective about what they will accept. Some will take certain clothing but not bedding or textiles. Others have turned down furniture, kitchenware and decor items. (Yes, there are exceptions.) A few years ago, a local Goodwill told me they had to pause accepting donations because so many people were “decluttering”!!!! These shops can hold only so many sets of dishes, mugs etc.
Sustainable re-homing of our goods is not as easy as it sounds.
Decluttering is easy for me. The hard part is finding an organization to take it! (The landfill is not an option!!!)
The things I’ve done for social media is stick to RUclips videos by people who are minimalists or practice slow living. On instagram I follow people who have PT exercises that I need. I am quick to unfollow/unsubscribe when I feel like their advertising is overtaking their message.
For fashion, I have worked hard to figure out my personal styles. I know what colors, silhouettes, materials, etc. work for me. When something is on trend that works with my style I consider it otherwise it is a no.
As a former shopaholic who still loves to shop, I limit myself. I avoid online shopping as much as I can and I allow myself a fun shopping day one day/month. I allow myself up to one new item and two thrifted items on this shopping trip. I find I look forward to it and enjoy it, even if I buy nothing, much more than when I was mindlessly consuming.
Great strategies! Thanks for sharing
Fortunately I've always been a minimalist
I did buy a pair of shoes in 2018 I think
It's true that maximalism has been popular recently, but I think it won't last long. We only have one Planet!
Of course maximalism is taking over. There is very little money in minimalism for most brands. The goal is to get you to shop and to feel ok about it. Plus, being minimalist requires discipline and making hard choices, then sticking to it. Not something most of us are very good at.
I think, why mininmalism is more important than ever, is also because of the inflation rate. Since last year I think very carefully about how I spend my money - more than ever before I guess.
It's so beautiful but I don't do very thirsty plants 😂
For a lot of people minimalism is -psychiatric rooms, white walls and nothing in the room-😂
I've stopped watching any videos that list my favorite things on Amazon or whatever.
yaaaaas!
FYI, Fast fashion functions on a WEEKLY SCHEDULE.💀
