What a nice man Prepstedder Bob is.....comes across as a gentle soul. Your family has met some great people.
I had Temple Grandin teach a portion of my animal housing and equipment class at the University of Illinois back in the late 80's. I learned a lot that I still use today. Very interesting and intelligent woman!
Thank you! I was getting 1 egg a day with 12 hens. I followed your advice, and today I got 8 eggs!!!!
We hung old cds for our chickens they like to spin them. A chicken swing helps with boredom and a flat bucket of sand. We had 20 chickens they loved shelled peanuts, gave them something to peck at. Good luck
I've always increased their protein and calcium. Stops them from eating eggs. Instead of buying oyster shell, I cook the eggshells and feed those. They prefer those to oyster shell.
Liz Hoxie That's cool Liz! How do you cook/prepare the shells?
I've been doing that. And now I'm watching this video because these super spoiled buggers are eating eggs.
I cook mine 350 for 5 to 10minutes
Why do you cook the egg shells?
Just a suggestion....The chickens might like straw in their egg boxes. I've watched some other farms videos and when there isn't enough straw/hay in their boxes, they lay them elsewhere.... Loved the video and good luck on getting more eggs.
Very informative video. We have had chickens for five years now and have not experienced this issue, but sure is good to learn how to deal with it if it should occur in the future. Anxious to see how this turns out for you. Thank you for sharing.
Don’t know if you can still purchase it but at the feed stores they used to sell crushed oyster shells and we fed these to the chickens. We didn’t have them eating any eggs after that.
Tractor Supply has an entertainment swing set for chickens.. It had multi levels and a trapeze thing. It was all made out of wood.. You all could probably make something like that out of wood.
Donna Ledington: Sounds like a sure fire way to have healthy chickens hopping around. They'll all turn into body builders and acrobats next with something like that around! :)
Hey Brad, you can try putting a golf ball the color of the eggs chicken lays in the nesting box. The chickens will peck at it and tell it is hard and then they will also think that their eggs are hard.
headed to his channel right now to see what I can learn for our chickens, Thanks BFH for this video
One more thing to check is feather lice sometimes when they lay the egg and see the lice they peck to get to them and break the egg and then they eat the egg
Great video with lots of info for all of us chicken owners. Look forward to the next in the series.
This is the most detail I've heard on chickens eating eggs. Thanks for the advice! I'm gonna try it.
Brad what a neat guy. This was awesome keep us updated on the egg count. Thanks so much.
Have you found that there are broken egg mess? If not it might be the amount of roosters you have. I have about 40 chickens and had 5 roosters. I was getting 5 or 6 eggs a day. I got rid of 4 roosters and production came back up to 24 to 30 eggs a day. Just a thought.
Building a nest box would be fun and a roll out one too. I have metal roll out nesting area. The one thing I don't like about them is that each level (only 2) is wide open with no dividers and the chickens had too much room to peck around in it and sleep for that matter. I like your nest box because it has dividers in it. I ended up building nest boxes and I am still making adjustments on what works best. :)
Good vid. Did he say Eggz box? LOL!
Time to butcher a few chickens and freeze 'em for the winter. LOL :) My brother once had a rooster that got really mean and it attacked him. Big mistake in my family. They had him for supper that night! LOL Too funny.
Little Shepherd Farm Lol. My friend had to do the same! 😄
Not yet.
Same thing happened to my pet duck when my grandma saw him flog me when I was 4
I still remember the stories of how we had a rooster that would attack people (I was probably 3 or 4), and how my sweet little Sunday-School-teacher mama had finally had enough, yanked him up by the neck & threw him across the henhouse!!
Yeap that's what I do with egg eating hens not worth the effort to save them.
Thanks, Prepsteader Bob!
Awesome video.. Thanks to both of you
Have a blessed day 😊
Yay, awesome! Thanks Bob and Brad!
Mine stopped eating eggs when I put glass eggs in the nest, but now I have 2 broody hens trying to hatch fake eggs lol
Ashley B: LOL Too funny.
Reduce their corn intake for reducing broodiness
Lol
Very informative. Thank you Brad & Bob. Maybe you need to get the chickens a few children's toy pianos for them to peck. They like a xylophone too.
please don't forget to put bedding in those nesting boxes
save on he cleaning for sure
Saves on broken eggs that the chickens "clean up".
My chickens intentionally get rid of the bedding...
TexasPrepper2 got one of those egg roll boxes, and I believe he said it was working great!
I gave my chickens a oyster shell suppliment. No more problems
With mine I put the shells from eggs we used in there to them and collected the eggs earlier and that stopped the egg eating.
I save my egg shells and feed them back to the chickens. I also buy feed with oyster shells already mixed in. My chickens eat eggs when they don't have enough water, this is mostly in the winter when their water freezes. I have to change water daily in the winter.
Love your guest he really informed us well.. Great video Brad :")
Love the banter!❤❤
I like the book "Fresh Eggs Daily" by Lisa Steele I love her practical advice.
What did Bob mean by 'a better feed' for the chickens? Brad, you buy your feed from the Amish, but what is in that chicken feed? We get our feed from Tractor Supply and it is more a commercial feed. I'm not happy with that, so maybe I could make my own?
Bob mentioned a book about learning how different animals behave, to something like that. Would you mind finding out the title of that book? I would love to buy it. Thanks!
TXplowgirl Thanks so much!
Enjoyed this video, learned a lot. Maybe a little straw in the nest too?
my hens kick the straw out all the time
Eggspert. What a cracking good joke!!!
its a pun
Cracked oyster shells...or course rocks it helps grind up the food and gives them calcium to make eggshells strong...maybe to strong to peck and eat.
they don't make an Xbox for chickens but they do make mirrors and they do like that
is the egg roll box a layer cage?
What?...No Xboxes for chickens?! Are you kidding me? :)
Hes an EGGSpert I can tell he ain't YOLKing lol
Good Content and Informative.
My dad had this issue a long time ago, the eggs were gone, he thought his hens just weren’t laying anymore, well he went out to clean the coop one day and found an opossum that had made a nest under the nesting box, you couldn’t even see it unless you moved the box. Needless to say the opossum went bye bye pretty quick and we got our eggs back.
Our chickens figured out how to get to the eggs in our roll away nest box.
Do the "egg roll" box! Would love to see it.
Wonderful video full of useful info
Time for a critter cam. :)
My chickens love eggs but they don't actively take ones from nest boxes. How do we know? We have cctvs on the nest houses cause we have pests of the bipedal kind. Anyway, they mostly only go after the ones we accidentally drop while collecting, or discarded shells & unfertilized ones from newly hatched broods. We also mix in eggshells & shellfish exoskeletons with our kitchen waste which the immediately go after & fight over. We also have duckweed & azolla fed to them that comes with plenty of pond & bladder snails. Then after the rice harvest we let them free range on the fields which are littered w/ apple snail shells which we see them peck. I think diet insufficiency is the biggest reason they would actively eat eggs.
What a great Guy!
With roll away nest boxes I don’t have any problem there… But quite a few, for some reason prefer to lay on the ground and if they lay on the ground, the eggs are goners! I’ve even seen one hen peck the egg as it was coming out…. The hens are just waiting for the eggs…
I have 3 hens, one is eating her own eggs, she isn’t eating the others eggs, only her own. I feed them layer feed, the nesting box is also their coop, it is raised and you don’t immediately see the eggs when they walk into the box, they have lots of varied foods, they get all our kitchen scraps and live in a 15x10feet run with clean hay floor, outside with wire. I have absolutely no idea why she does this! It’s been going on for a couple weeks now, my last resort is filling up a egg with gross mustard, to try and un encourage them from eating them?
Did it work? Today makes 3 day of discovering my hens eating some of the eggs. I gave them two mustard eggs today. Hoping it works.
Did it work?
@@growinginthewind not really. I upped their protein though and that helped.
@@shalen thank you for that 🙏🏿💙
At 11:30 and others.......are those eggs on the sill above his head?
Awesome advice and guidance on how to stop chickens eating there own eggs !!
Don't laugh, but I swear I see a clutch of eggs over prepsteader Bob's head at the top of the wall through most of the end part of the video.(from about 5minutes&9seconds in) Are your girls wings clipped?
That’s great stuff expanding foam. I used it to seal up gaps for the winter…
😂 Awe, too good to be true I guess, I've heard hens find some strange places to lay eggs and it would bug me if I didn't at least mention it. 😉
Tell them they will be put into chicken pie if you are caught with egg on there face. Maybe needing grit to strengthen the shells.
All I do is steam, bake, or boil the shells for about 15 minutes. Drain and let cool. Crush with a potato masher and feed to the chickens.
If you've boiled the eggs, you won't have to do anything.
When they quit laying for winter, cook and then dry and crush the shells for storage. They're ready when the chickens start laying again.
It would have been nice to see if this worked. This many years later and with diminished vision I'm not able to search for a follow up video if there even was one.
Did it work???
this is what I said in a live stream....glad he is telling you what works too. :)
What about checking for snakes
Check for weasels and snakes?
How about some swings?
My husband built ours a large playset with swings, but they ignore it
Use the golf balls when they peck at it it hurts them and makes them stop
Our chickens won't lay in their nesting boxes. We have the decoy eggs in them, hasn't worked. Any ideas?
One starts eating and they all come running to join in the feast!
They make chicken swings.
I give mine eggs shells as well as oyster shells.
Very helpful. Thanx
He's the most adorable guy. Reminds me of my uncle ❤
Thank you very interesting .
No problems until my pullets recently began laying. They lay on the ground and I fortunately many of my hens are now eating eggs:(
These guys are hilarious, they should have their own chicken show. I have about 22 chickens and three ducks and they are eating their eggs and some of them are even laying their eggs in the garage.
I recently changed my feed from layer pellets to game brerfer and conditioner, now my chickens are laying eggs left and right 😜
I'm just going to eat them instead. Thank you.
Why not provide them with some "toys" like you would a pet bird? Examples are small wiffle-type balls to peck and chase or even the small bird swings. Just an idea.
Eeek!! I cannot see any comments despite there being 59 listed I can't read 'em which annoys me no end. Are you sure there isn't a snake (or more than 1) in the barn? All your newly laying Hens didn't become Carnivorous at exactly the same time did they? They aren't fighting for food or for room to move. Are you sure that they are actually laying these eggs? Sorry if this has already been suggested, like I said No Comments.
We got a best nest nesting box it all little bit of money but so worth it no dirty eggs no broken eggs no eating eggs and we are getting more eggs from them. Check it out. Oh I have Heard about that. Ewww ! Thanks for your Videos God Bless
DARN , now we gotta be hoping the chickens will eat more eggs - so we can see them make the roll out nest boxes!!!!!!
Yep chickens will eat chickens i remember when we had a couple meat ones and as soon as we cut the head off they were already trying to drink his blood.
I have one egg pecked every day. Often it's broken and very messy. It is only in an elevated box, like that for years. Maybe too much grains? We started soaking our layer with millet and wheat in a bucket. I also started grinding their egg shells and mixing in feed. Any more ideas?
Is their perch much higher than that nesting box? One might be camping in the box at night.
Are the eggs from hens that eat eggs still good for human consumption?
Show how to make egg roll box I have tried this and it does not work for me. Mine is off the ground and I still got one chicken. I have isolated it but she still eating eggs thanks
You guys are like Click and Clack but for chickens.
How about straw or hay?
Mine never ate eggs
Yet. One of mine started recently.
Sweet
Why does roosters are cracking the eggs of the hens how can I stop that
What kind of chicken is that on the title page of this video!?!!??!!?
I filled a egg one time with hot sauce and they still eat them I feed mine scratch feed is that good
I heard that chickens can’t taste spicy. Like peppers or hot sauce. Who knew?! 😂
Try higher protein feed
@@laurapayne8177 they are doing pretty good now
I have crows that fly into my coop and steal my eggs.
