It is kinda ironic that Pliny says "Earth is the one element that'll never betray you" when he would later die when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii and Herculaneum
Though, to be fair, he'd probably blame that on fire
Edit: Y'know, on second thought, I think the wind got him the most, though I'd argue all four elements contributed.

    • @accursedamygdala8241

Eratosthenes' estimate on the circumference of the planet was really, REALLY close, and Pliny was de-facto correct by siding with Eratosthenes on the issue. It was known by the Greeks that the planet must be round, for all of the reasons Pliny himself stated. So Eratosthenes took the distance between two known points (one in Greece, one in Egypt), and with the help of a friend, measured how long the shadows of an object of a known height were at a specific point in time in each location. He then used the DIFFERENCE in those two shadow lengths to calculate what the curve of the earth should be between Greece and Egypt to account for the shadows, and then extrapolated that out into what the full sphere they're sitting on must be.
Eratosthenes final estimate was that the planet must have a circumference of approximately 250,000 stadia, which is approximately 40,000 kilometers. The accepted, known circumference of Earth is 40,075 kilometers, meaning he was only 75 kilometers off. That's a margin of error of less than 1%. Eratosthenes and Pliny got it right.

….fyi…. There really is a town which has had multiple frog rains because the area is in a really unique weather location which has a rare occurrence of a tornado being whipped up into a full blown hurricane…
….so not only was it raining literally canonball sized hail, but a local species of frog uses a marsh land near the local town as its breeding grounds…. So it literally rains frogs and canonballs of ice too!!!😂

if you wanna know what pliny thought about ethiopians and other unrelated stuff here you go (if you feel the need to reply be normal)
To these circumstances we must add those that are connected with certain celestial causes. There can be no doubt, that the Æthiopians are scorched by their vicinity to the sun's heat, and they are born, like persons who have been burned, with the beard and hair frizzled1; while, in the opposite and frozen parts of the earth, there are nations with white skins and long light hair. The latter are savage from the inclemency of the climate, while the former are dull from its variableness2. We learn, from the form of the legs, that in the one, the fluids, like vapour, are forced into the upper parts of the body, while in the other, being a gross humour, it is drawn downwards into the lower parts3. In the cold regions savage beasts are produced, and in the others, various forms of animals, and many kinds of birds4. In both situations the body grows tall, in the one case by the force of fire, and in the other by the nutritive moisture.
In the middle of the earth there is a salutary mixture of the two, a tract fruitful in all things, the habits of the body holding a mean between the two, with a proper tempering of colours; the manners of the people are gentle, the intellect clear5, the genius fertile and capable of comprehending every part of nature. They have formed empires, which has never been done by the remote nations; yet these latter have never been subjected by the former, being severed from them and remaining solitary, from the effect produced on them by their savage nature

However, it's entirely feasible that there are lakes with a large amount of rotting material putting out methane, or a place where natural gas leaks out, such that it is possible for a lake to emit enough flammable gas that it could give a recently burning and thus still hot torch enough of a kick to re-ignite.

Christian monks didn't copy texts like The Historia Naturalis by hand thousands of times, teach themselves to read and write in dead languages, and pilgrim through war zones, disasters, and plagues in search of misplaced books to rescue and preserve, just so some neo-fedora a thousand years later could blame Christianity on an alleged dark age that nobody considered a dark age until John Draper published "The History of Conflict Between Religion and Science" in 1874. Christianity is the only reason information from the Greeks and the Romans survived to this day. Your historical revisionism is barely 100 years old, and even other atheists have abandoned it as untenable cope. Find a new axe to grind.

With the Milk Rain vs Blood Rain I think they could be pretty even
Milk when it spoils it smells sour, Blood when it starts to, idk “go bad” it might smell metallic but I’m pretty sure that will fade some what quickly Milk on the other hand lingers, idk what I is but when ever milk goes bad and the smell gets out it just sticks
Also do have consider the question of, does the blood have disease in it cause if it does then yea it’s disease city when it rains, also the blood will definitely stain everything it dries onto which could look cool if your into blood clots red

Yeah, many Roman texts were very VERY "otherist". To the point where sometimes even other parts of the Roman empire where treated like outsiders, even places like Greece. It's wild.

Raining milk is WORSE for one reason. Blood will eventually dry-up in the heat. Milk curdles.

It's funny to me how culture changes. Nowadays most people who have a racist mindset that White People are superior would be shocked to know that the Romans didn't consider themselves white, like, _at all._ If you read the book (even just the sentence Sam left slowly fading there) you can see that the Romans thought themselves to be the perfect race because they weren't black like the Ethiopians down south, _nor were they white_ like the people North of them.
Romans thought themselves a separate race altogether from Europeans above them and Africans below, they saw their "in the middle" skin tone of a light brown we nowadays see in a lot of Mediterranean people as the perfect race.
It's hilarious to me to imagine a modern day Neo Nazi, even if he were a perfect "Ubermensch" sample, tall, muscular, blonde with piercing blue eyes and as white as snow, if he went back to Rome to relive the greatness of the empire, would find himself on the receiving end of exactly as much racism as a modern day African American who travelled there too.

I like how every example of racism in these comments are only toward white people, as if only white people participate in such practices. Then again I should have known to simply not look in the comments.
