I don't think this would work if the engine wasn't "locked up". If the engine still turns I think you might need a flywheel locking tool. Also when prying out the flywheel once the gland nut is off, it might be prudent to put it back on, screwed down so that only1 mm gap between the nut and the land, so that when prying along the flywheel edge it doesn't get 'cocked' ...
