- The quest to find the blade to replace my ESEE 6 continues...will this be the one?
I've dabbled in a few Tops Knives lately only to find fault with each of them. At this point the Tex Creek XL and Silent Hero have not proven to be the ideal match for me. With the Becker BK7 being the lead contender, it too has its issues.
But now, here comes the Tops Longhorn Bowie. I saw it and took a gamble on this knife...wasn't so sure how I'd feel about it, but after handling it during this table top review, I have high hopes.

I like knives that flow, that have that organic look, like they went through a wind tunnel. I don't like knives with flat angles, that look like they fell off a Decepticon or came out of an anime. I like Tops knives because they do great things with 1095, so it is worth the sometimes cringy names they give their knives. I fell in love with the Longhorn Bowie as soon as I saw it, a couple years ago, and have wanted one ever since. The lines just appeal to me, like those of my favorite EDC, my Tops HOG 4.5. Smooth. Classy. Not a big fan of the sheath, and so I resisted buying one for a long time. But I just won some money betting on the Chiefs for the Super Bowl, and I could no longer resist this knife calling to me. I just bought one from the only place I could find it in stock, and bought a kydex sheath for it at the same time. I can't wait to get this in my hands. It will be my fourth Tops and it is long overdue for me to have one in my collection. I just like knives. I have a whole drawer full of them. My wife doesn't understand until I compare them to her shoes. When you just get enjoyment from something, it isn't about need.

Great review. I have eyed this for a bit, and I am purchasing one of these after taking the closer look you provide, and chewing on the points you raise.
I also am seeking to replace an ESSE 6, which is a magnificent knife. And if I'm going to be honest with myself, it is because it is not quite beautiful enough. If it's going to be so functionally badass, the look should match, but it somehow doesn't.
But this knife is pure artistic lines. It is beautiful.
You wonder about the upswept tip. I general, that design element is to facilitate better stabbing and penetration.
But, if you are a functional camp batoner (batoning quarter logs and smaller if you are a backpacker seeking to save the weight of a hatchet), that upsweep allows to to keep the blade level to the bottom of the log.
And the curved spine edging is a really nice element. It allows allows you to put some meaningful percentage body weight on top of the blade with full palm pressure.
I've never purchased a ferro rod that doesn't come with an attached striker, so I share your view that is not a negative.
If you like this knife, you probably also would like an SOG Kiku, which is equally beautiful.

Welcome aboard!! Glad to have you!! But yes, this blade is absolutely gorgeous. So, I did sell this one off to keep my channel moving, but there hasn't been another knife that I have wanted to get my hands on more than another one of these Longhorns!! I am totally drawn to the shape and size, and the handle comfort is amazing. Never mind that gorgeous stone wash...it's a great knife...I hope you like it!
I have used my LH bowie for everything and that upswept tip doesnt detract from its functionality at all. Another difference not mentioned in this video is the LH bowie is 1/4 in thick, the esee is .188.
Made a kydex for mine!! I love it... as an everyday carry not so much but it’s in my truck seat and I am always confident having it.
I sold my Longhorn. It is the one knife I regret isn't part of my collection. I will get another someday!

Same here. My old g2 knife was my esee 6. A tried true design but also a bland one. Was also on the fence even after getting and inspecting my new tops bowie. I was most concerned with the blade shape, the curvature. Was concerned that it would affect its carving ability compared to esee 6 straight blade but nope. It works just as well. I like the design of the handle better, mine has rmt. The blade looks really long but the edge actually isnt with the finger choille(idk if i spelled that right lol its getting late). Still long enough to easily baton with and i think the rounded spine adds some durability to that. Ive put it through its paces and g2 say atleast for now the longhorn bowie is my favorite bushcraft knife. I should add i just spent $200 on a custom leather sheath for it, thats how much i like it. The sheath it comes with is pretty cheap. It works but i wanted something better.
I will be getting another Longhorn Bowie someday. I sold mine to keep the channel moving, but at this point I have been dreaming about another one for over 2 years. I will definitely get a new one. That knife has so many desirable features!

Its honestly a perfect belt knife I thought it would be bigger but to my surprise its just perfect. I'd say its a more bushcrafty competitor to the Esee 5, BK2/BK10 or Ontario Rat 5 / Tak1 series. ...
Instead of having a typical American Vgrind sharpened pry bar its more refined still beefy but not heavy at all. I put it on my belt today and had no problem walking around with it as an EDC....It ain't one you would wear to an appointment but running around to the store or just hanging out as a free citizen its great.
It rides very slim to your hip and you can turn that clip so its very functional for adjustments.... IMO its a must have for us knife nerds. This was my first Tops Bro so now I'm REALLY putting that LONGHORN BOWIE on my short list .
Im on a very tight budget so that $130-$150 range is more duable for the future. I already have the MSK coming and now I'm thinking about the BLUE OTTER neck knife it just speaks to me beautiful blue /black micarta. 😍 I got the knife bug bad at the moment all this fricken quarantine crap has my "must go " camping alarm going off LOL.
Haha, the knife bug gets dangerous...but it's so damn fun! I would say more than any other piece of gear, a good knife has so many solid uses...and you could literally use it every single day. I very much like the Brakimo design. I think it fits my typical style preferences. All Tops models have awesome fit and finish. I am not a fan of all of their models, but I do have many that really call my name!

If you like the handle on the BK7 give the BK12 a try. It's a knifeworks exclusive, but it is 6 inches in the blade with a drop point which puts it right there with the ESEE 6. I like the Longhorn, a design I've always been drawn to. Useful curves.

I do like the longhorns but the BK7 is the way to go, in my opinion The Esse 6 is just as awesome!
You can always add snaps to the nylon sheath for retention.
Not a bad idea actually...that's the benefit to the nylon sheath!
This vs the Puzon Wilderness Bowie 7. What do you choose?
Tops makes an awesome blade. Something for everyone in every field and their heat treatment for their 1095 hc is unbelievable. Flat grind would be the selling point for me. Now here comes the down side for me with Tops. Their sheaths suck. Small complaint for the knife your getting but still an issue for me. And every Tops knife I have I have had to finish the sanding process around the grip to properly marry the grip to tang.
Did you ever clip that longhorn tip ?
That sure is a sweet Tops blade right there !! I have several Tops knives, but not that one. That just might have to be my next purchase. Good video !!!
I eventually sold that knife and have wanted it since the day I did. I highly recommend it. The handle is amazing and you know how good the blade will be.

Thanks for the review. That Longhorn Bowie certainly is a nice piece of kit. I am totally with you on how the metal sits proud on the handle, I really like that at lot. I like to strike my frerro using the metal choil, that way the blade's find edge is pointed away from the rest of me; should any mishap happen I would be risking less of my body parts to slide over the cutting edge.
I really like the upswept tip of the blade, but I am only seeing it on a computer monitor, I might change my mind and agree with you if I had the knife in front of me.
If you ever need a disposal service for the Tex Creek XL or Silent Hero, I would be willing to suffer the disgrace of having one or both of those in my possession. ;) Thanks for the cool video, I enjoyed my way all the way to the end.
Awesome idea about using the choil for striking the ferro rod. I'm gonna try that for sure. and your right that it would minimize the exposure around the blade.

Check out the Dark Timber 1911 Elite or the Honey Badger. Hands down two of the best camp/survival/bushcraft knives out there. And they are not overly expensive for 3V blade steel knives that can take a beating and retain amazing retention. That Tops looks cool though.
I've been eyeballin those blades...a bit out of my price range right now, but I might stumble into one if things go well...
I agree that they're priced well for what you get. I just can't get one (or more than one) right now.
Man, you must try a full tapered tang knife. It is so much better than any of these production knives.
I have both...I like all blades... customs, mid tech's and production... it's all good! Blade geometry, fit in the hand, grind angle, and heat treat are the important part to me Tapered tang helps with balance and fit in the hand... two aspects of a good design, but not necessary if the knife is designed well with the tang thickness in mind.
Interesting knife to check out. Not a huge fan of the trailing tip either nor the finger groove next to the finger choil, would prefer something along the lines of the ESEE but not sure if it really matters so long as its as comfortable as you say. Damn nice looking knife. Tops really build some sweet looking knives. Especially since they dropped the bed liner coat and they have always made premium quility as far as fit and finish, incredible.
As far as the orange sheath? I hear ya but you could easily just use some shoe polish and darken it, thats what I would do.
This knife, overall, is particularly gorgeous...such nice lines! More form than function, in a way, but only for my particular taste. I guess the sheath could be darkened...and probably worked out to a pretty nice contrast actually, but I have to point out what the knife comes like from the factory.
I have been eye balling the Tops long horn. I wouldn't modify it though, you would void the warranty and could potentially compromise the strength of the blade or tip. Also, I cut up my Tops sheath, used the pocket to lash on my pack for my fire kit. Are you considering selling your silent hero and Tex Creek XL?

Good point about the warranty...I guess I didn't consider that. If I were to modify it I would use water to keep the blade cool. But I totally hear you...I'm not going to modify it until I've had some time with its standard design.

Good video...those knives are all solid, quality blades...but if I could only have one if shtf....I'd grab that bk-7.
I love the BK-7...it's almost the perfect blade for hard use in the woods, to self defense. One tough blade!

Have you given this knife a good workout? I have my eye on Tops the Moccasin, Longhorn, Brakimo and Mission Team 21 all peek my interest but man that Longhorn is just so nice looking. The handle is so much longer than most and also thicker, another thing I like is the rounded spine which is comfortable, not every knife needs to throw sparks imho. Thanks or giving us a good view of this one, sure wish Tops had used kydex though.
I'm sorry, I sold it before I used it. I had a real hard time selling it because I wanted to slice something sooo bad. I just needed to keep the cash flow and this was my best option to sell at the time. I have also been looking at the Moccasin...but I think this longhorn is amazing in terms of comfort. I'm not a huge Bowie knife guy, but if you are, this will be wonderful for you. Don't expect to spark the ferro rod...but the roundness and curves and fit and finish are spectacular on this particular knife. I love the while liners and the denim blue handles scales...one of the prettiest and most comfortable feeling handles I've had.
outer limitless The whole 90° spine thing is silly IMO, why must every knife be "Bushcrafty" LOL I have plenty of scandi knives to whittle wood but I want a wicked kick butt all around camping and hiking knife. The round spine is actually something I'm looking for, its very comfortable on the thumb when choking up. I might save up or sale some knives to get that bowie, I've also seen that Moccasin Ranger knife man it looks awesome to, plus it comes with a kydex sheath that's a huge plus. I've always been turned off with Tops knives, they have this strange fascination with skinny grips, a knife can be perfect but if the handle sucks IMHO its worthless, but the Bowie and Moccasin they got awesome grips. You do great vids man, very well thought out.
Kind of old comment but thought i should say i have used this knife for years and it is awesome. I own a ton of knives from esee, scar blades, tops, kabar and this is one of my favorites if not my favorite to use. Mine has the rocky mountain tread scales which i love. One thing i also like about this blade which some people may not is the rounded spine. It doesnt tear up your hands or baton stick. But like he says in this video i hate its sheath. Not a huge fan of esee 6 sheath either, ive always been a fan of dangler style sheaths that move with your leg.

No, this is how they came factory. Sometimes Tops are shiny, sometimes flat. Not sure why, but I've had both on numerous models.
I believe it is called a Clip point. Really nice knife. Have you seen the TOPS Cochise?

I sold this one but bought another eventually. I actually like my first one better...it had more natural finish on the handles. The newer one has a shiny lacquered finish which I am not a big fan of.

I have not. I'm on the fence about actually using it in the field. keep an eye out on the secondary market...can probably scoop one up cheap. Got the one I reviewed for $110 and it was brandy new...and even if you use it, you can resell it for the same money. There are deals out there!

I eventually sold that one to keep the channel moving but finally bought one I used. It's a pretty badass knife!

@@fathersonsurvival Yes a few. I designed my T17.6 specifically for that purpose. The hard part is a saber grind out performs a flat grind in my opinion. I like batoning and splitting wood so flat grind knives struggle a bit more generally. For 6" knives with a flat grind the Boker Rold is pretty nice. I find my sweet spit is the 7" blade length and saber ground. Becker BK7...Hogue EXF01... there are some super tough Work Tuff Knives. So if you're really taking apples to apples comparison ESEE 6 is hard to beat but I think many other knives that are apples to oranges comparison out perform it in many cases. If that makes sense...
Where could one get a cheap leather sheath for this knife?
Go on eBay, JT Leather Sheath. It's made for the Tahoma Field Knife but works for the Longhorn.

Are you thinking about buying a tex creek xl? I hope you do selfishly...I'd be curious to see what you think about it! I want to love that knife so bad...but it just missed with the undersized handle...at least for my hand size and preference.

I've been on a Tops kick lately. I have a bunch of Schrades, but never tried either of those.
I generally like schrade when I use them, but for whatever reason I tend to spend $100+ for blades. I've tried to dial it back but I'm simply drawn to expensive knives. I'm starting to realize I won't be able to sustain at this rate, so I'll have to make an effort to try some of the more recommended budget blades! It's a hell of a lot of fun though!

I own the scar blades papa bear and i will admit that design is by far my favorite. Ive used it for everything, it chops, carves, batons, everything but... one thing ive learned is it doesnt hold an edge as well as my esee and tops LH bowie knives? I contacted the company to ask them what they temper their blades to and they never bothered to get back to me. For $200-$300 i would expect better customer service.

Nah...I sold that one. Ended up buying another. Love the tip now. Although I would love to grind one for fun, but my newer one is still intact.
You should go on theknifeconnection.com and build an Essee 6 the way you want it. You can have them build a sheath that you design too. Saw this on Gideon’s tactical channel
I have been eyeballing building an Ontario Rat 7 for a long time, but never did...and I've since gotten my hands on a Rat 7, but it's a factory build. If I didn't own an ESEE 6 I would probably buy one through TKC, but at this point I don't need two. However, I would consider picking up their scales...definitely a nice upgrade!! No it is not
.......... once the blade makes its entry it's natural movement curves upward into the critter... heart, lungs, liver etc. its less likely to move straight in and back out. rather, its direction changes and this = allot more destructive potential.

I have never held the apache dawn, but it looks great. The Longhorn is absolutely gorgeous, and feels spectacular in the hand. Biggest question, do you like the clip point? I love the blade geometry overall and the flat grind. The handle scales, choil, size, weight, finish, everything on that Longhorn is top notch. It's my favorite from look and feel, but the heavy clip doesn't do much for me.

Unfortunately, I did not test that blade hard like I do with other blades. At the time I needed money for more gear and sold that in almost new condition. I know someone who used that blade very hard...I have reached out them to see what they think...hopefully I'll hear back and if I do, I'll send you the response.
