    You don't just dump the clutch on the launch of a WRX or STI. You feather it, like any other car. Dumping the clutch is beating on the drive train and killing the 0-60 time. I don't know where this common misconception came from.

    The WRX does indeed have a twin-scroll turbo with an electronic waste gate. You hit the nail on the head when you said the WRX has an "old school" feel. That's why I bought one. I got the base model. No sunroof, no safety nannies, old school key, "rip it" hand brake, no silly digital gauges, no adaptive suspension, etc. When it comes to cars, I guess I'm a bit of a luddite. I enjoy DRIVING, not having the car drive for me. I looked at the GTI, Civic Si, Elantra N, Jetta GLI and all of them are great cars....but they are awash in buttons and screens and electronic nannies. The WRX feels the most raw, visceral, and fun. For $30k, the base model is a bargain if you are the type person who doesn't want or need the bells and whistles that drive up the price.

    I owned a 2005 and a 2011WRX. The clutch on the '05 was heavy, very rally based, was able to hit bumps while maintaining shifting confidence.
    The clutch on the '11 was closer to a BMW in how light it was. I would hit similar bumps and wouldn't feel I had the same level of control.
    Currently, I have a 2021 Ascent Limited with a Nameless strut-tower brace, Perrin dogbone, and Cobb was able to provide an updated firmware for my old Accessport to work with the Ascent. I run 91+oct whenever possible. Also upgraded to 0W40 Pennzoil Ultra, Subaru wants 0W20. 0 is for the turbo & LSPI (Low Speed Pre-ignition). But 20 tops out at 75°ambient temperature.
    My 11 used to call for 5W30.

    The wrx transmissions when they were 5 speed were notoriously weak. The best way to launch them without bogging or shattering 1st gear is to lift your foot off the clutch similarly to if you were lifting your foot while walking. It isn't an ultra fast lift like a clutch dump, but it is fast enough to not slip the clutch excessively. You typically end up with better 0-60 times as well because you don't get that bog after like when you dump the clutch. It powers you off like a sling shot instead of a sudden jolt, bog, then getting power again when the turbo hits full boost.

    I don't think its ideal to compare shift feel on a FWD car than the WRX shifter. The FWD cars have linkages from shifter to transmission. The WRX is more directly to the gearbox.
    The shifter on the WRX is more similar to my 91 Supra with R154.

    Awesome review! Just got my 2022 WRX Premium and I LOVE IT!!! I do notice from 1 to 2 gear is a bit jerky even when I let off the clutch super slowly. I usually shift between 2500-3000 RPM. Any suggestions for a smoother transition??

    • @robmcbride4576
      @robmcbride4576 Год назад +1

      From my experience with the 2019, it becomes smoother the more you drive it. It could be a mixture of getting used to where you need to shift and mentally and adjusting to predicting revs (the 2019 had rev hang between 1st and 2nd that took some getting used to). Also, it could be a bit of just breaking it in. I'm at 80k miles now and I can be smooth between all gears. I haven't been able to test out a 2022 yet for comparison but am hoping to get my chance soon. I am looking at a 2022 limited manual that just came into my local dealership.

    I've seen a few reviews talk about how it's disappointing that there's no EyeSight Tech with the MT and... honestly, I say good riddance. I have a '17 OB Limited 3.6R, and the EyeSight Tech is a pain in the ass. It slams on brakes at weird times (like when someone is turning in front of me and it thinks I'm getting too close, but a small steering adjustment to the left would easily avoid any potential collision), it picks up on tall grasses when I go camping and slams on brakes when I'm trying to back up, the cruise won't work if you're on dark roads and the EyeSight can't pick up on the lines... I get that Subaru is trying to think for you and make the car avoid any potential collision that might ever come your way so they can continue to say they're the safest car in the universe, but as someone who's leaning hard towards a '23 WRX as my next daily, I can't wait to not have EyeSight.
