I really wish the interviewer Dom bless his heart wouldn’t have cut this short. I could listen all night. My brother Kirk was friends with him & Flora. They taught him a lot. Young hungry musician . The music is timeless. Oh I wish there was a part 2 & 3 ti this interview.
Love this great human being abmd a incredible percussionist innovator and improvisers Saw him at the bach dance and dynamite society in halfmoon bay And in SF during i termission at the bach society I went up to airto And asked him what album that I should buy He asked if I had a reason for the music I said I wss learning to breathing to music with a big dmile he said the other side of this Which was a great choice for me Very humble sweet fown to earth guy comes from a family of healers Love all his music thank you
I got to hang with Airto one night-his stories were just like this, completely engaging and funny and wild. He’s as great a person as he is a musician.
God Bless the great Dom Famularo, please get healthy and be totally well Dom, we need you in the world of drums. Dom gives such great interviews doesn’t he? Keeps the flow and the energy positive and moving.
Discovered him when my college floor-mate turned me on to "You're Everything" off Light as a Feather (1972). I gotta say, I was more interested in Airto's rhythms than Chick's playing. I was a raver back then, heavily into hard UK acid techno. This opened up my world.
Thank you so much for sharing this! AIRTO changed the way i see/listen music SO SO SO MUCH!!! Of course i am a drummer and percussionist! Thank you once again for this....you made my day
Some of the greatest examples of the vivid coloring of all types of jazz music performed, can be found in your percussive work during the hey day of the CTI recordings. I recall listening extensively to the many releases from the various artists, circa 1970 through 1980. Your magical sounding name displayed prominently in the artist's credits. From Deodato, Gabor Szabo, and others to Esther Phillips, you puntuated their work with your own riveting statements. Just enough, but always tasteful. Thanks for what you did to give the world all of this great music.
Dom and Airto, Thank you so much for these "absolutely fantastic" Session Panel interviews with the greats!..........Some of the most informative and, respectful material available by far! ....We NEED THIS for the future of music/musicians to watch , listen, learn and respect WHERE/WHO so much fantastic playing came from!
This is just fantastic! So good to hear the master of percusion's histories! Airto has changed my life since I heard him for the first time when I was starting to play percussion! This interview is very inspiring and Don Famularo's way to understand... the questions... just great. Thank you for sharing!!!
At around 26:00 - The musicians network place in Sao Paolo he’s discussing sounds exactly like the old New York Union Hall (or music unions in any city in those days…1950s-60s), where players would go in the mornings or at certain times to get work-if someone needed a bass player for a recording session, or other union work, you could go there and wait for these sort of cattle-calls, and sign on and get on the gig.
The 1st recording session I had in Washington DC in 1972 as a drummer was with Dave Holland on upright bass and David Williams on Electric Bass/Fender....Ron Carter's protege.
I am surprised that Chick Corea's album, Light As A Feather, did not get discussed. Airto played drums on the album and used an 18" Paiste Flat Ride which sounded terrific. I have seen this Flat Ride on his drum kit with his own band and with Richie Garcia playing percussion. Go back and listen to his work on drums on the album. It is very cool playing.
People have to put people into boxes.Airto is banging his way out of those boxes. He's not rock,or jazz.or even samba. He's Airto.Unique.

Great interview.
I've been listening to a couple of Airto's 70's albums again lately & they stand-up really well . He's made some really great and beautiful music .
absolutely riveting interview of Airto. I have all the music he played with Miles and Weather Report ...
Airto was in Munich in february 1994. That was amazing. I even had the chance to speak with him after the show. It was like the blessing of a Saint.
Same here-yes, he’s a spiritual force, if you are touched on the inside by Airto Moreira, you have a gift to carry for your entire life.
Just love him ❤️
Miles, Ron, Herbie, Wayne, Cannonball, Creed, Chick, Jack, Sergio..all my favorites - thanks Airto ! thanks Dom!

No mention of Corea or RTF!!??
Interesting that he doesn't talk about Miles.
