  • In this video I go over my favorite paint line up, Mr. Color paints. As far as airbrushing goes, these paints are just about fool proof. I also show how to get the best results when brushing them. On top of being easy to use they are inexpensive and come in a ton of colors.

I wish that all these big hobby paint companies would support your videos with some sponsorship and free paint and consumables as it's not fair that you are paying for all their free advertising out of your own pocket.

    This video may be old, but you seriously just saved me so much sanity. I have been getting the Mr. Hobby Aqueous line of paints, but the Aqueous pink was out of stock, so I got Mr. Color pink. Tried using it 4 times and it instantly clogged my airbrush, I had no idea why. Didn't even realize it was a lacquer vs. acrylic, and definitely wasn't doing 1:1 (at least) thinning ratio.

    A lesson learned the hard way. Purchased some glass mixing jars from Hobby Lobby. Placed reducer and paint in jar. Grabbed my trusty Badger paint stirrer. The result was not pretty. The Badger must have been hungry and ate thru the bottom of the Hobby Lobby glass paint jars. Spend the little extra for Tamiya paint jars.

    I love these videos. You are doing a great service to the community. One thing I would say about brushing is you do want it to be thin but not as thin as air brushing and it is not a 'brushing' motion you want to use but rather a stippling motion and you don't want to re-break the surface by going over an area you just did. You can avoid all brush marks but the sheen will likely look a little different as the paint takes longer to settle. Same principals as you described with the metal. Lincoln Wright @ PaintOnPlastic has an awesome tutorial on hand brushing lacquers on his page. The dude is a hand painting god.

    Great video, thanks for taking the time. Very interesting about the rapid thinner for metallics, going to have to check this out, been using MLT for everything and I think this will help a lot for improving metallics.
    A few tips, a nappy (diaper) bin is great for disposal of kitchen roll / waste when spraying lacquers, they are designed to keep the smell of shit at bay so work well for keeping the smell of lacquer thinners contained.
    Lint free or low lint wipes for cleaning the airbrush bowl, it stops paper/dust particles being left in the bowl and coming through on the next spray session after a quick colour change, a lot of cleaning supply companies have these and are pretty cheap, they are also more of a cloth so have more "cut" for shifting stubborn bits of paint.
    Lincoln Wright does great videos on brush painting lacquers for MaK models, interesting stuff about reactivating lacquers with MLT, you should check it out.

    Thanks for your tutorial. I am a novice on the airbrush, but using my Sparmax Max 3 (20 psi), and a 2/3 thinner (not self levelling though) 1/3 sail colour did a great job on the underside of my F2B wings. The upper side was the WNW PC10 mix in Tamiya acrylics, 50/50 thinner/paint, and again came out very well. And yes, regular hardware store lacquer thinner works very well as a cleaner. BTW, single use plastics are banned in most of Australia, so the source of testing spoons has dried up!

    Don’t turn the caps over. When you do the paint drips down and gets on the bottle rim, when you put it back on. Instead leave the cap right side up and set it on a paper towel. When you return it to the bottle it stays cleaner. I give up on stir urr like the ger in tiger. I can’t figure out how you say it wrong but at least you know it’s wrong. Earlier this evening I attempted to use the color MC 216, Mr Metal Color Bronze. I had thinned it with the leveling thinner. The results were disastrous! First, the paint was behaving strangely in that it was having difficulty going through my 0.3 ProCon Boy airbrush (the same used in this very demo). It kept clogging the nozzle and I found myself forcing it through with extra bursts of wide open trigger. Once I did manage to fully cover the piece and let it dry, it just looked strange. It was very mat looking, and it had a very rough, uneven surface. And then when I wiped it with my dry thumb, the paint just rubbed right off with no effort. Now I know why. I had used the leveling thinner with this metal paint!
    Anyway, I can confirm… do NOT use this leveling thinner with the metallic paints. It will ruin your piece. I guess the metal flakes end up floating free of the binding agent before it dries and you end up with a clumpy, awful mess of a paint job.
    I’ll see if I can get some of that quick drying thinner to see if I can achieve the same results as shown here.

    • @barbatosrex9473
      @barbatosrex9473  3 года назад +1

      I don't yet. If you thin the paint as I show here you shouldn't get orange peel as it's caused by the paint not being thinned enough plus low air pressure..A lacquer properly thinned should never orange peel. It's one of the reasons I love lacquers

    • @barbatosrex9473
      @barbatosrex9473  3 года назад

      @@davidbocock7679 try thinning the paint more and getting closer to the piece. You might want to lower the air pressure so you can get in closer. Go with a dusting coat first. Flash it dry then another dust coat. After that go for a wet coat or two. Don't flood it but it must be a wet coat at the end, spray it wet enough but not eso much as it runs.

    Your air filter is backwards? The grid should be backwards away from the airflow. Thanks for the video. The rapid thinner for metallics was eye opening for me. Once you explained it, it’s obvious, but why isn’t “for metallic” in like 24pt on the jar? Doing model military aircraft there are a ton of metallics and these look amazing now

    I am pretty new to this hobby and ordered myself a slew of supplies today. I haven't invested in an airbrush but bought some mr.color super metallics to paint fairly small pieces on a kit. I will be brushing by hand with Mr. Color's Rapid Thinner.

    So can I pre-mix my lacquers and acrylics? For example I bought two jars of Mr Color Maizuru Grey for a Japanese destroyer Shimakaze. If I know I am happy with a 60/40 ratio would it hurt to combine them into a more permanent premixed container? And if so, what would the shelf life be?
    Also, I live close to the spraygunner shop and have visited their store a few times and I can say they are the coolest people ever. Super helpful and really a pleasure to do business with. Great equipment too, their No-Name Brand equipment is top notch and still affordable.
