Brilliant Mikey. Lots of good stuff to educate other operators who are gonna change the sump...or oil pan as you guys call it
What your video cannot convey is the utterly horrible mess as oil runs up your arm and go where oil is not supposed to go. I feel your pain.
So many times I've had the same angst, trying to fit an oil filter filled with oil and screw it on to the housing.
Your fingers are covered in oil and slip like hell on the filter. Once you got it on by a couple of threads, you can clean your hands, and the filter and tighten it tighty tighty by hand.
That slippery oil catches you out all the time. Even although you say at the beginning...this time there will be NO MESS.....there always is a mess. It's the Law.

I wish I could have loaned you my Steril-Koni Lift system. It makes things like this so much easier. Keeps the oil baths from happening. As I was watching I keep thinking Mike's about to get soaked. Good informative video. Take care Mike.

Well, that went alright for you, only one bath.... I would have been well oiled 🤣🤣🤦‍♂️
Bit of an awkward job for one person, you did well to get the sump replaced. Kenworth did a good job in locating one for you, complete with gasket and seals !!

That was a super tough job Mike, I took an oil bath like that dropping a 5qt Ford flathead V8 pan on my Willys jeep years ago...can't imagine handling that "bath tub" Cummins pan. Glad you replaced it, wouldn't ever want to do that again. But now you know the ins and outs of it.✔💯

Yeah your right. Torque it correctly. Over tightening will cause them to leak. Did it in my 12 valve. It mushrooms the bolt holes on the pan which caused the gasket to not sit down all the way. Then you gotta buy a new pan.

Boss man… it must be a relief to find the pan was clean?
When I was a kid, motor oil was not nearly as good as what we have today. It broke down much faster under heat and didn’t have the Mulit-viscosity characteristics. If an engine went 100k miles, you were lucky.
My dad kept a pencil magnet in his tool box. When he dropped a pan or opened a small gas engine block. He stuck the magnet into a rubber glove and fished around to find metal flakes.
He used kerosene to rinse the pans and sprayed it into the bottom of the block to remove all of the gunk. That was a messy job but one that he believed added life to the engine.
It had to be done often because the gaskets were made of cork. It got hard and brittle. And, the rubber used in the seals was all natural… it broke down too.
There are so many technological improvements in automobiles that have increased their engine life. But, in my opinion, none attributed more than improved oil and seals!
You did a great job filming and explaining this. Thanks for taking the time and putting in the effort!

Hey Mike, great piece of mind doing it yourself. Then you know it’s done 💯% right. Last owner did well by you, and a testament that oil that is made today is way better than the old days. I imagine you’ll be off to the races pretty quick here. Good luck
