I really like this game. I managed to track down the expansion last year but have yet to actually play the game since then. Perhaps this will be the push I need.
ohh this was such a disappointment for me. I thought I would adore it and got the base game and expansion and it fell flat. Couldn’t get past the way the combat was represented both mechanically and with game components. Sigh. I’ve been meaning to use the cards in some kind of solo RPG hack but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Maybe I even traded it already. I can’t remember!!
For what it’s worth, late pledges for Assault on Doomrock: Ultimate Edition was just opened on Gamefound. Not sure if this game is worth the-visiting on your channel, if you still feel the same way about it now. I appreciate the abstract design when used properly in board games. More games should use these systems, instead of games which advertise “500+ tokens!” on their Kickstarter pages as a feature. That sounds exhausting, and actually, computer are very good at handling that sort of stuff. Those are game systems for video games, and less for board fames. I just backed a copy on Gamefound.
I was so excited for this. There are some ideas in this game that I think are great. The assigning dice for actions and the abstracted combat are really cool. I even thought the character creation with a negative trait was fun. But... The play time is long for what it is - 3 adventure phases and 3 combat phases. And, there's not a lot that can be done to reduce the time it takes to play. The adventure part is very random and not that interesting. The choices here just don't feel meaningful. And, there's not a lot of mitigating the randomness. The dice can be brutal. The game needed unassigned dice to be useful for something. My suggestion would be that they're usable for movement, because the game can be incredibly frustrating when you have a melee character and the enemy AI is able to kite you to death. I realize there's some mitigation with re-rolls, but it's not that rare hard to have turns where you can do nothing. With the dice, I think the recent Warhammer Quest games have a similar system that's simply better. There's never dice that are unusable. And, the shared dice pool for heroes is a great way to mitigate bad rolls. I wish there were designers looking at the game, taking the cool ideas from it, and creating a more polished, faster playing, and fairer feeling game.
I quite enjoyed this game. At least the second KS version with extras which is the only version I've played. My problem with it was learning the rules. I recall some of the battle rules being rather confusing and had to dig more than usual to clarify a few things, and making some mistakes along the way in doing so. That said, once I eventually got in the groove, it was fun.
Did they fix the devil horns in the reprinting? EDIT: Nevermind, somehow I missed that this is the 2nd printing you're playing. I watched this vid and all of Rhados playthroughs and I have to say this games design and gameplay looks awesome to me. Needs minis instead of tokens though, maybe I'll proxy Massive Darkness figs...
I have it and the expansion with mini card sleeves if interested, I can do a private eBay listing for you only. It's the rarer to track down second edition which includes dual genders among many fixes
I remember being obsessed with this game before it came out. Then I saw the negative comments about the game (mainly the play time and the overstaying it's welcome) and I just forgot about it. Watching this video definitely revived my interests.
It can be a long game, for sure. I definitely would NOT play with more than two players, and really think it's a solo-only game, something I failed to mention in the review.
Too Many Bones - too much plastic, and too expensive. I'd be all over it if they released a cheaper cardboard version of the game, but I'm actively trying to limit how much plastic I'm responsible for.

I was looking for this in shops and ebay 3-4 years ago and I could not find it or reasonably priced

Copies pop on ebay pretty frequently, for decent prices.
