Great performance. I was curious to see and hear Lea’s take on this song and here it is. In comparison, I’ve seen and heard Idina’s live performances of this song and I’ve noticed it is not as smooth as the original recording of the song (which is always polished in the studio). Lea’s version however, performed live here, without retakes, using a regular microphone (dynamic mic as opposed to a Neumann studio condenser mic) without punch-ins, and pitch correction software is vocally superior. I work at a recording studio and a singer like Lea makes our job easier because there would be less touch-ups and retakes in order to produce an emotionally effective and pitch-perfect performance. Watch Idina sing this live and it’s almost as if her voice is about to break at some parts. Lea’s version is flawless. Both great singers. Just different.
Jay Arch Well said! So true. Lea’s technique is so beautiful. One that took years of training and experience. She has one of the cleanest and most beautiful voices in the industry. Even until today, her voice is still magical.
Lea's version is alright. I liked her enough in Mulan, and her voice fit there because it required an elegant and smooth voice to fit Mulan's role. But here, Elsa is passionate and almost aggressive really, so Lea's smoother and lighter voice is a very, very wrong fit, and all I can hear is an imitation. Compare this to Idina's version at the most important part of this song - the bridge. The part where she sings, "THE PAST IS IN THE PAAAAAST!" That high pitch is distinctly different in both versions, but only one of them feels like she means it in thrusting the past violently into the past with all her passion, and that's not Lea.
You'll never think if she can pull it off...I always think every song she sings is much better and more easy to understand...she's like talking...with sounds...wished Disney have chosen her again for this song...she got Jasmine and Mulan, she can be Elsa too...She is really a queen! bow down...hehehe!

3:35 and 3:45 she could hit these parts perfectly but I guess she's just not in good condition, every word is coming from the heart though, this is what I love about her.
I remember the first time I saw her as a kid watching the 10th anniv of Les Mis on TV, and later live in Broadway in '06. She's really aged beautifully, but her voice is timeless even more so.
Lea is phenomenal, Idina is phenomenal. Who cares who sings it better? If you're a true Disney fan the only reaction should be how freakin' awesome it is to hear Jasmine/Mulan sing Let It Go - two generations of Disney movies connected.
Wow!! Talk about control and technique. And she always looks comfortable performing in front of a crowd.
