I generally don't like growling, but Opeth is one of those I learned to appreciate. My advice is to stop looking for vocals as means of lyrics delivery, that growling spoils. Think of it as singer doing a distortion on the sound of his voice to convey a mood, similar to distortion on other instruments like a guitar, think of it being an instrument, rather than means of communication. That change of mindset opened it up for me. Besides that, Opeth has no growling on latest 4 of their albums, so if you want to ease into it, start from the newer stuff, and progress to old, once you can appreciate it. They are really an amazing band and Mikaels growling style is one of the few I enjoy..
That's actually pretty smart. I kinda just brute forced myself to liking growls by going through stuff like Gojira and Mastodon and then eventually into stuff like Slipknot, Jinjer, Opeth, Lamb of God, etc.
I just can't force myself to like some type of growls. So far i only like Joe Duplantiers and early Chuck Shuldiner growls but opeths not so much sadly
I don't think I could like this even if I was still young.. the comment section I'm reading alot of "look at growling as a type of instrument other than vocals".. if you have to force yourself to like it.. is not any good guys.
100% you gotta think of the vocals as another instrument and if you feel compelled to delve deeper into the lyrical content you can. Prior to that though you should try and focus on the notes and energy it envokes not just the words you cant make out!
Opeth - Deliverance, The Drapery Falls, The Demon Of The Fall, The Grand Conjuration, Burden, Bleak, Lovelorn Crime, Harvest, Credence, Face of Melinda.
Lyrics: Ghost of mother Lingering death Ghost on mother's bed Black strands on the pillow Contour of her health Twisted face upon the head Ghost of perdition Stuck in her chest A warning no one read Tragic friendship Called inside the fog Pouring venom brew deceiving Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young" Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young" Holding her down Channeling darkness Hemlock for the Gods Fading resistance Draining the weakness Penetrating inner light Road into the dark unaware Winding ever higher Darkness by her side Spoke and passed her by Dedicated hunter Waits to pull us under Rose up to its call In his arms she'd fall Mother light received Her faithful servant's fee In time the hissing of her sanity Faded out her voice and soiled her name And like marked pages in a diary Everything seemed clean that is unstained The incoherent talk of ordinary days Why would we really need to live? Decide what's clear and what's within a haze What you should take and what to give Ghost of perdition A saint's premonition's unclear Keeper of holy hordes Keeper of holy whores To see a beloved son In despair of what's to come If one cut the source of the flow And everything would change Would conviction fall In the shadow of the righteous? The phantasm of your mind Might be calling you to go Defying the forgotten morals Where the victim is the prey
Pretty much the last four Opeth albums are more progressive and sung in clean vocals. So you may really like their newer stuff. I really like this song. But they have a lot of good stuff to check out.
This live album is awesome! Lots of not growling. I am not much into growling, but this song rocks! And the other song's on this live show....so good!. Its Red Rocks outdoor amphitheater. I grew up about 10 miles from there.
I personally don’t think Blackwater park is a good entry opeth song especially for someone who isn’t so into growls. The Drapery Falls would be a wayyyyy better song
Please try "Burden" or "Windowpane" by them and they don't contain any growing. May be when you're listening for the first time, I would still recommend the studio version to get a better feel. Then watch the live version to appreciate them even more.
They were a progressive death metal band that have now morphed into a straight up prog rock band (album wise anyway..live they still mix it up) Long progressive songs always take a few listens to fully "get" but that's what makes it all the more interesting to me. Opeth became my favorite band after taking quite a while to get into. Absolutely awesome musicianship and songwriting..the kings of transitions! Also, they were the first band that made me enjoy growls. To date Opeth and Jinjer are the only bands that i really enjoy the growling...they both use it when appropriate to add something to the songs. Non stop growls all the way through a song still does nothing for me.
It was exactly the same for me when a friend of mine was in my car and said: listen to this band, I think you'll like it (My fav bands are Tool, Rammstein, Nightwish, but quite different things also in metal and rock). This was exactly this song my first experience, and the more the song was playing, the more I was like "wooaw!!!" I had to stop the car and say to my friend: ok, we stop, I want to listen to it without taking a risk because they brought me somewhere else. Great souvenir for me this first time. The talent is just incredible. I like a lot of songs that Opeth fans don't like (for example Era is my second favorite), I'm not so much into their jazzy songs and when it's too much death, I'm really when it's more prog metal. Great great band.
It drives me kind of crazy when someone is clearly going to enjoy the song but they keep commenting on having trouble with the growling I mean, if you liked this song a lot, and listen to more Opeth, you're going to start enjoying growling and screaming vocals more. There are a ton of amazing Opeth songs so you can't really go wrong with any of them, but I would suggest Harlequin Forest
Check out "Amongst Stars" by Amorphis with guest vocals by Anneke van Giersbergen (the middle singer in "Valley of the Queens" and one of the OGs (original goddesses). Male vocals switch between beautiful melodic and fierce growls, Anneke brings tremendous energy and contrast.
Thanks for the reaction!! nice video, dude! They have an amount of amazing songs on their earlier career, but I suggest you look for the album versions with these ones, cause at this time the live records wasn't that good. Check for the studio version of "The Drapery Falls" and "Face of Melinda" :D
This was an amazing show. Red Rocks is outside Denver at the foot of the mountains and is widely known as one of the best venues in the world. Heilung, who you just reacted to recently, is playing there in October, and Wardruna played there right before the pandemic started. It was actually the last show I saw. Check out more Opeth for sure! A Fair Judgement live would be a good one with no growls.
You should check out: Soft Vocals: Burden, Moon Above Sun Below, River, Hex Omega, Haxprocess Mix: Harlequin Forest, Moonlapse Vertigo, Hessian Peel, The Moor Mostly Growls: Serenity Painted Death, Baying of the Hounds, The Leper Affinity, The Funeral Portrait
It's a pity that RUclips recommended me your video after 2 years. Anyway, great balance of comments and listening 😊 this particular version I love more then studios, keyboard are great here
Opeth is known for drawing a scene or a picture with the first couple of words, that's why the entrance was growling to make you shape the picture in your head of how grosome the scene is. that's why it's perfect when you understand the lyrics
This is the song that I made myself learn to like growling for. I must have listened to it over a hundred times that first week that I "discovered" the band. Before Opeth, I used to laugh at growling vocals, they always felt like a joke to me. This song was so intricate and epic that I made myself take it seriously and learn to not only appreciate the growling, but almost love it. Opeth is a very skilled band and Mikael is an amazing writer. He doesn't growl much any more (at all?) but their music still has that 70s prog sound that you might enjoy
Good reaction. My guess is that the growling will probably grow on you, it did with me when i got into them. To me it's a great way to create a certain mood in a song, or treat it as a instrument. I really enjoy it now. Keep going with Opeth. Btw, i call this genre progressive metal. 😁
Nice reaction, appreciate your openness to the journey that is European and especially Scandinavian metal. Totally agree with what you said regarding growling in general - However, there is no denying the unique sound Opeth has, nor Mikael Åkerfeldt's vocal talent. Keep up your reaction-journey!
Red Rocks is an amazing venue. Opeth an amazing band. Mikael has a GREAT clean singing voice and is one of the 'growls' that I eventually came to appreciate.
I'm not sure how many Opeth songs you have already checked but here are some of my recommendations: Drapery Falls, Lotus Eater, Coil, Burden, Hessian Peel
On both the audio and lighting systems they generally run they have boards hooked to laptops which they pre program audio settings for the board to button queues, it’s literally a matter of pressing a button to queue the settings for the next part! This is also how they deal with long improv parts in the song with no set length. That being said the reason for huge transitions in metal like this is that they are mimicking classical music which has movements within a piece and tell a story, this is why their songs are often longer than songs of other genres!
Red Rocks :) Also...no more growls since Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum (which was released in English and Swedish)...So...Opeth, Mastodon, Gojira, Baroness....I only got into the them in the last 3 years...are probably my favourites now. Grew up on hair metal, thrash and grunge / alternative...I listen to all sorts now, but Opeth and Mastodon take the cake. Love your reaction.
oohh, from NightWishes rabbit hole to Opeth's Pandora's Box. seriously you gotto do more Opeth from here, and look for videos with lyric captions to understand what he is singing. and this is a masterPiece!
Nice reaction, I loved it. You should listen to hessian peel or harlequin forest from opeth, they are much alike ghost of perdition in terms of growling and clean voice transitions, you'll love them
Great content man! I think you might enjoy Death they are the ones that started death metal. Pull the plug,Flesh and the power it holds,Suicide machine,Spiritual healing and many more great songs...
Opeth ain't a Bud Light, it's more like an Guiness stout... takes getting used to :) If you like transitions between growl and smooth voice, check out Jinjer if you haven't already. Cheers from Sweden
T. Tuffnuts: It seems like it's angled. It's not people on like the floor. - - I don't know what the hell they call it. Video title: Am I a joke to you?
For an Opeth-related band, try reacting to the band Soen. Soen was formed by ex-Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, and the goal of Soen was to be similar to the band Tool. No growling, Tom!
Since most recommendations/requests have been from their progressive metal "growl"-catalogue I'll break the mold and recommend some of my favorite tracks off their 5 non-growl albums (in no particular order): Lovelorn Crime (off their 2019 album In Cauda Venenum) The Devil's Orchard (off Heritage from 2011) Windowpane (off Damnation from 2003) Faith in Others (off Pale Communion from 2014) Spring MCMLXXIV and Sorceress (off Sorceress from 2016) I absolutely love their older heavier catalogue but I also love their "new" prog rock direction that they took in 2011.
Mikael has a very unique clean voice, he sounds very different from other singers. I recommend you react to Opeth "In My time of need" from the same concert. Here she sings the whole song in its entirety clean.
Hey Tom, listen to me - I hated the growling vocals before Opeth - and it took me awhile to get into Opeth. I tried for a couple of years, but the growling was hard to get into. Now I love it - and in time you will too - but, if you need to ease into those kind of vocals the same way I had to, here are some song recommendations from Opeth that either don't have any, or have a balance that leans more towards clean. Windowpane - Amazing solos. No growls. Harvest - I appreciate this the most as part of a three song package with Bleak in front of it and The Drapery Falls after, but it's great on it's own. Very mellow - no growls. Face of Melinda - That middle part! No growls. Isolation Years - About as close to pop as Opeth will get. No growls. And then, slowly work these into your listening... Harlequin Forest - Some growling, but the majority is clean. That middle part! The Drapery Falls - Same as above. After awhile, the growls will become appropriate and you will sense that they are needed in the songs that have them. Once you get to that point... Listen to Bleak, Harvest, and The Drapery Falls in that order. It might be the best three song run on an album that i've heard. After that, the door is wide open. Masters Apprentices, Blackwater Park (The whole album), Still Life (The whole album, but The Moor is really awesome!), and Deliverance are great next steps.
I suggest you listen to Moon Above, Sun Below next. Since you prefer the smooth, chill side of Opeth I think you would really enjoy their more recent albums. Moon Above, Sun Below from Pale Communion is the song that got me hooked on Opeth.
In general, bands like Opeth don't get air play on most radio stations, anyway. Radio stations don't like playing long songs and they just want quick, catchy stuff that will hook ppl into listening to their station. The internet has opened up a whole new world for discovering new bands, at least a lot faster. I never used to like hearing the growls in songs either, even though I own a heap of Opeth albums and Slipknot and Trivium haha. It was Jinjer that actually broke me into appreciating the use of growling. I still wouldn't enjoy a song of constantly growling all the way through, I don't think, but the voice is an instrument in a band as well as delivering the lyrics and there are times that using the voice in a different way really works.
Much like Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis, Mikael also has one of the best growls AND some of the best clean vocals in metal IMO. Great band! All clean vocals on their last few albums as they have now shifted into a prog rock/metal band. Cheers!
You got a subscribe from me! Please check out more of them. They have plenty of music without any gutterals, and so much range and variation. I suggest next you do Bleak or The Moor (both have gutterals)
You should check out “sludge metal” It’s a kind of metal that I enjoy most. I have also found that a lot of death metals vocals are too much for me. I’ll come back with some sludge metal suggestions but I pretty much love all of it!!
Opeth is not only growls, their latest albums are more 70s progressive rock. It's the only band I listen to that growls, they are amazing, give them a chance. Try with Damnation album if you want something softer and acoustic.
Just like a painter uses lighter and darker shades to accentuate different emotions, so does a good composer use lighter and darker shades of tones to accomplish the same effect. Harsh sounding vocals are often used when "painting" a harsh picture and therefore should be celebrated and respected just as much as clean vocals. Music should not be listened to as parts of a whole, but rather as a whole. You should really give one of their older songs, "Black Rose Immortal", a listen.
they started as death metal, but then started experimenting and became progressive death metal, and now they are just progressive metal leaning towards just progressive... but they always change, while holding on to that kind of witchy melancholy sound
"Is this metal, or is it prog rock, or death metal?"
Mikael: yes.
Exactly.
Its progressive death metal
I'd say check harquelin forest Live at the Royal Albert Hall next to ease yourself into them
I generally don't like growling, but Opeth is one of those I learned to appreciate. My advice is to stop looking for vocals as means of lyrics delivery, that growling spoils. That's exactly how I came to appreciate growling - thinking it was an effect like a distorted guitar.

Opeth - Deliverance, The Drapery Falls, The Demon Of The Fall, The Grand Conjuration, Burden, Bleak, Lovelorn Crime, Harvest, Credence, Face of Melinda.
Lyrics:
Ghost of mother
Lingering death
Ghost on mother's bed
Black strands on the pillow
Contour of her health
Twisted face upon the head
Ghost of perdition
Stuck in her chest
A warning no one read
Tragic friendship
Called inside the fog
Pouring venom brew deceiving
Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young"
Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young"
Holding her down
Channeling darkness
Hemlock for the Gods
Fading resistance
Draining the weakness
Penetrating inner light
Road into the dark unaware
Winding ever higher
Darkness by her side
Spoke and passed her by
Dedicated hunter
Waits to pull us under
Rose up to its call
In his arms she'd fall
Mother light received
Her faithful servant's fee
In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what's clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give
Ghost of perdition
A saint's premonition's unclear
Keeper of holy hordes
Keeper of holy whores
To see a beloved son
In despair of what's to come
If one cut the source of the flow
And everything would change
Would conviction fall
In the shadow of the righteous?
The phantasm of your mind
Might be calling you to go
Defying the forgotten morals
Where the victim is the prey
Best band on planet earth
Congretulations. You have now entered the world of Opeth. Once you're in you will experience huge difficulties to get out. So, welcome 😃
18:30 you HAVE TO react to more of these guys, no offense :) My suggestion is Harlequin Forest. Lyric video or live video.
Great suggestion
"Harvest" Live from the Royal Albert Hall is an excellent clean vocal song by these guys
Yep....this song is a beast! Just the right amount of growling!
Opeth goes from growls to beautiful harmonies.....their discography is HUGE! Keep listening 🤘
Opeth is their own genre.
Opeth - Deliverance!
Harlequin Forest, Deliverance, Blackwater Park, Windowpane.. Some big ones with different sounds. Enjoy!
Pretty much the last four Opeth albums are more progressive and sung in clean vocals. So you may really like their newer stuff. I really like this song. But they have a lot of good stuff to check out.
It's at the Red Rocks park and amphitheatre in Colorado. Looks pretty sweet for sure... 😊
It is a stunning venue.
This live album is awesome! Lots of not growling. I am not much into growling, but this song rocks! And the other song's on this live show....so good!. Its Red Rocks outdoor amphitheater. I grew up about 10 miles from there.
The moment you listen to Opeth the first time, you know instantly that they are unique.
Deliverance for definite. Amazing piece of music
Lol, Opeth needs few times to get in, but when you do you love them. Try Harlequin Forest, black waterpark, windonpane next.
I personally don’t think Blackwater park is a good entry opeth song especially for someone who isn’t so into growls. The Drapery Falls would be a wayyyyy better song
Next Opeth song: "Deliverance"
Please try "Burden" or "Windowpane" by them and they don't contain any growing. May be when you're listening for the first time, I would still recommend the studio version to get a better feel. Then watch the live version to appreciate them even more.

Thanks for the Era tip, I hadn't heard this one. Great song.
Opeth - The Drapery Falls (live).
It drives me kind of crazy when someone is clearly going to enjoy the song but they keep commenting on having trouble with the growling

Mikael Åkerfeldt's vocals are their own instrument both clean and heavy are amazing
you've heard of all these band "rabbit holes" on youtube. Well welcome to the deepest, craziest, most intense, most relaxing rabbit hole of all....
Wanna go smooth with them?
"Burden" or "Benighted"
Both extremely beautiful songs
Or just the whole Damnation album
@@ludvigborga266
Lots of great songs there...
To Bid You Farewell
I was the exact same way before I got into these guys. Now they are my favorite band.
Opeth is amazing 🤩
Welcome to the Opeth rabbit hole! Lol
Thanks for the reaction!! nice video, dude! They have an amount of amazing songs on their earlier career, but I suggest you look for the album versions with these ones, cause at this time the live records wasn't that good. Check for the studio version of "The Drapery Falls" and "Face of Melinda" :D
This is live in Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado.
HARLEQUIN FOREST
Would like to see your wife's reaction to this...Opeth is definitely a "gateway" band for getting into metal.
You should check out:
Soft Vocals: Burden, Moon Above Sun Below, River, Hex Omega, Haxprocess
Mix: Harlequin Forest, Moonlapse Vertigo, Hessian Peel, The Moor
Mostly Growls: Serenity Painted Death, Baying of the Hounds, The Leper Affinity, The Funeral Portrait
I’m here because of Opeth!
You seem like a cool guy.
Spoiler alert: it’s not only harsh vocals when it comes to their discography! Enjoy
Yeah, good mix there! You're absolutely right!

Good reaction. My guess is that the growling will probably grow on you, it did with me when i got into them. To me it's a great way to create a certain mood in a song, or treat it as a instrument. I really enjoy it now. Keep going with Opeth. Btw, i call this genre progressive metal. 😁
Funny 😁 you can understand his growling!
Opeth are a progressive rock band these days without the growls in their past 4 records. They still play the death metal era 'hits' though, live.
The amphitheater is red rock in Colorado. It’s carved out of a red rock the whole venue
Listen to any song from the damnation album. You will love it.
I'm not sure how many Opeth songs you have already checked but here are some of my recommendations: Drapery Falls, Lotus Eater, Coil, Burden, Hessian Peel
auto liked and subbed because this was posted an hour ago. (3:29 p.m. CST) Also thought the last name was hilarious!!

I'm not a big fan of growling either, but Opeth and Mikael Åkerfeldt is certainly the exception to the rule.
Try the Damnation album! There you get just the smoooth stuff. 😎 GREAT songs on that album.

Nice reaction, I loved it. You should listen to hessian peel or harlequin forest from opeth, they are much alike ghost of perdition in terms of growling and clean voice transitions, you'll love them
Mikael Akerfeldt has also done vocals on an Ayreon album (The Human Equation).
Dream Theater. Best Prog metal band. No growls. :) Try Home, The Count of Tuscany, The Glass Prison.
For an Opeth-related band, try reacting to the band Soen.
Soen was formed by ex-Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, and the goal of Soen was to be similar to the band Tool. No growling, Tom!
Last band I saw before the coof cancelled everything.
You'll love their song Deliverance
Since most recommendations/requests have been from their progressive metal "growl"-catalogue I'll break the mold and recommend some of my favorite tracks off their 5 non-growl albums (in no particular order):
Lovelorn Crime (off their 2019 album In Cauda Venenum)
The Devil's Orchard (off Heritage from 2011)
Windowpane (off Damnation from 2003)
Faith in Others (off Pale Communion from 2014)
Spring MCMLXXIV and Sorceress (off Sorceress from 2016)
I absolutely love their older heavier catalogue but I also love their "new" prog rock direction that they took in 2011.
Harlequin Forest for sure. Studio version

Members of Jinjer have said Opeth is one of their favorite bands.
Check out the double album of deliverance/damnation and pick a track from each?
Much like Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis, Mikael also has one of the best growls AND some of the best clean vocals in metal IMO. Great band! All clean vocals on their last few albums as they have now shifted into a prog rock/metal band. Cheers!
I don't like growling unless it's done tastefully. Definitely suggest more Opeth, Jinjer, and Gojira to fit that taste👌🏻
Great reaction to the
'progg' swedes🇸🇪
Check out their song “Sorceress” if you loved this. Or “The Grand Conjuration”
You should check out the night and the silent water roundhouse tpaes
Do Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope, Preferably the audio version but you could do the live one if you want.
Could you make a reaction video of the Camel Lunar Sea theme
You got a subscribe from me! Please check out more of them. They have plenty of music without any gutterals, and so much range and variation. I suggest next you do Bleak or The Moor (both have gutterals)
Anytime you're 'preparing your butt cheeks', it's probably a good song haha. 👍
You should check out “sludge metal” It’s a kind of metal that I enjoy most. I have also found that a lot of death metals vocals are too much for me. I’ll come back with some sludge metal suggestions but I pretty much love all of it!!
It would take me the rest of my natural life to write a song this good and dynamic..... and they write songs this long and complex all the time.
Ah, you'd like to hear more, but you're not sure what song to listen to next? Any of their songs. You're welcome.
I always suggest "Windowpane" for those who appreciate Opeth's Musicianship but Growls aren't exactly their cup of tea.
Well then, Opeth - Moon Above, Sun Below.
Opeth is not only growls, their latest albums are more 70s progressive rock. It's the only band I listen to that growls, they are amazing, give them a chance. Try with Damnation album if you want something softer and acoustic.
Please react to CLUTCH (the best band you've never heard of ©). I suggest for your first go, either Electric Worry (their most well-known song), Burning Beard, 10001110101 or A Quick Death In Texas.
FYI...this same comment will appear ONLY if I have watched your reaction video. I am not here to spam your channel...I just want to help get a great band some much deserved recognition. P.S....I will always give your reactions a thumbs-up, even if I don't care for or like the band or song you react to...because I like you and your channel. Cheers!
you will love growling because of Mikael
Opeth - Era should work well for you. It's best with the music video.
Sabaton, Meshuggah, Opeth...They are all swedish.
Listen to Burden and Windowpane if you aren't really a fan of growling.
React Their Song called "The Moor" please. Thank you
Just like a painter uses lighter and darker shades to accentuate different emotions, so does a good composer use lighter and darker shades of tones to accomplish the same effect.
