He keeps slipping into his Johnny Carson impersonation. Cher is uncomfortable with her arms crossed but she does save the interview. She hated Johnny Carson and would never appear with him because he evicted her from his house.
@ mikey59. Bear in mind that Rich Little was not an experienced talk show host or an experienced interviewer. So it is unfair to expect him to be a good interviewer. He was and is an impressionist.
I don't think this is exactly why Carson never interviewed Cher on his show, but I think this is interesting. "On election night in 1968, Son [Sonny Bono] and I were invited to Jack Benny’s house. A bunch of people were sitting around the television as Nixon made his acceptance speech. Johnny Carson, who was a big Nixon fan I guess, was there … But Lucy [Ball] thought that Nixon’s speech was boring, and she started making these great, rude jokes and noises while he was speaking. You could tell that Johnny Carson wasn’t happy - actually, he was pissed off - but he wasn’t going to say anything to her, right? I didn’t like Nixon, either, and I couldn’t stop laughing, especially because I knew I wasn’t supposed to." (Beverly Hills, Calif., 1968) -Cher
What was the reason that Johnny Carson once ordered Cher to leave his house? Carson was a very private man and wasn't known to host cocktail or dinner parties at his house, so why was Cher at his house?
I didn't understand that he didn't understand that some males have higher pitched voices naturally, and some females have lower pitched voices naturally.
I was literally watching this and thinking, “he must be a Sagittarius 🙄 (like me).” My fellow Sagittarius tend to irritate me. I looked him up, and it turns out we have the same exact birthday. Go figure!
Chaz...was into little league...not sure what she's gonna do...they talk about Chaz and you think Oh boy...if only they knew what would happen 30 years later but it was always there.
Although Rich Little in this 1978 videotaped appearance by Cher on Johnny Carson's, "The Tonight Show" did talk about himself a little too much, it is understandable in that as an inexperienced talk show host/interviewer he understandably tried to make his interview of Cher like a conversation in which two people talk about their similar experiences in the entertainment business.
This was interesting, I've never seen it before. I don't know if it's me, or a difference in interview styles between what I watch now and how they interviewed people back then, but I recently noticed when I watch old interviews from the 80's etc, the questions/interviewer just seems "off" and a little weird, like the interviewer is uncomfortable the whole time & not prepared. I noticed in this interview that half the time he was talking about himself & his experiences and not focusing on the interview being about her; was he always like that in interviews or just star struck?
Rich was a little conservative here, going after Barry Gibb (in a stuttering, uncomfortable way)as not being 'normal'- for singing in the falsetto style that sold 100 million records. You can imagine what he was thinking of the tabloid queen (at that time) Cher, when she first walked out before her honest-down-to-earth personality, finally put him at ease. (Cher also had a tiff with Johnny Carson a few years before this, and only went on The Tonight Show when Johnny wasn't hosting....maybe Rich was hip to that, and was expecting a more confrontational Cher.)
I was always very excited whenever I saw Rich Little on TV when I was a kid. Never saw him guest-hosting the Tonight Show. Now I see why. The guy's really not good at interviewing. He seems to be shy as himself.
Ironically, Dave Letterman once had Dana Carvey do Johnny Carson impressions on his show after Carson's death, and seemed to be overjoyed at experiencing the sensation that Carson was there with him again.

allthatjazzspaz95 it can't cross my mind to think of cher as a joke. She is untouchable now.
allthatjazzspaz95 She is brilliant at transforming herself into someone who is better and better her whole life.
She owned the 70's but in the 80's that when the "has been" period haunted her
Deborah Hoffman exactly, ambition personified- great example for us all!
Cher always an amazing interview.
She is so pretty here! I just love her!
God, Cher's outfit on Tonight was stunning! Must be Bob Mackie!
that 70’s hair on the interviewer!!!

Wow!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow........just wow!
Cher is looking forward to the gathering when she will meet up with the other immortals
This guy was a deuce...he didn’t realize he was talking to a legend
Rich Little is a legend in his on time. Don't you know the man of a thousand voices? He was sitting in for Johnny
He was a talented guy
Absolutely Beautiful!❤️

Joe Brentar lol thank you, this isn't Carson. Carson was on when i was a small child... he sounds like Carson. Lol
Lol he didn't say it was Carson. Lol he knows it's not Carson lol. Lol

Good for Carson
Thanks for posting Nina. I have never seen this!! Rich Little is an awful interviewer!! I felt bad for Cher.
Rich was awful, but Cher was/is a pro and saved it, and still made it entertaining.

johnny Carson didn't like Cher. Had her escorted out of his house when she crashed a house party

No matter what Cher said, Rich made it about himself. What an ego.
That guy is a legend in his own right!!!
Who's the host? Is the host before Carson?
Rich Little. Subbing for Johnny
Rich isn't dead.
He's 84. Imagine him and Cher having a reunion now for another interview! 😆
@@jedijones She might drive him nuts with woke bs!
Awkward
Is there a reason she was never on with Carson? How odd is it that I can only find interviews with guest hosts....

Both wearing wigs. Another inane 'interview'. Anyone else notice how high her voice is? That wasn't her falling it was a stunt MAN.

Still a valid question to ask why those singers with non-traditional voices were popular.

SpiritHawk7 Everything now is rehearsed and scripted, the questions and the answers. The shows back then did not do that.
It’s so phony now...the guest and hosts have to kiss and hug even if they never met before and act like best friends.
Rich was not a good interviewer. The best back in the day were Johnning Carson, Mike Douglans, Dick Cavett and Merve Griffin IMO.
The idiot who interviews her here is dumb as a doorbell. That's the difference you notice I guess.
The audience kept laughing at super random points.... when she mentioned Elijah they laughed?
Think because the name seemed eccentric and out there. No different than Chastity.
VERY cute interview!
Cher is a brilliant talented funny artist!!!❤
Rich Little was NOT a great sub for Johnny.
The most awkward interview, Rich is a wonderful entertainer / impersonator, but as a talk show host ...not so good.

Cuz she hadn't done much other than do cheesy variety shows and have some oldies hits from the 1960s, LOL.
