Here here, a legend he really has the knowledge to help everyone from seasoned racer to first time watcher engage and become cycling fans as he did for me, I’ve never ridden more than casually but am an ardent fan here in the USA
An absolute legend. His wit and humor are wicked sharp. What a wonderful storyteller. Perhaps one of the best lines in this interview: “now that I’ve got some money, I’m able to give it away…”. How can you not love this guy. My connection with the Tour is so intertwined with Phil. Huge respect.
"How can you not love this guy. " Low-quality commentating. Compare, say, to Macel Wuyts or Anthony McCrossan. I watched a section of video from the Tour of Flanders (the year Nick Nuyens won) - once with Liggett commentating and the other with Wuyts. It was like a different race. Liggett was talking about how great Cancellara looked and how hard "this great man" would be to beat while Wuyts was pointing out how Cancellara missed a feed and looked to be suffering Sure enough, Cancellara underperformed toward the end. As the finish got closer Wuyts mentioned how Nuyens was in the group of ten or 20 riders looking fresh. Liggett never mentioned Nuyens' name till he was in the final two- or three-man break with the less than 2K to go. Liggett sounds like he knows what he's talking about but compared to some others he really doesn't. Maybe year and years ago he did. Not recently.
I absolutely used to love listening to Phil and Paul commentating together and still do from those archives and Phil currently too. True cycling legends always and forever.
Without Phil, Paul and later Bobke I would have lost interest in watching stage after stage in their entirety. He's still sharp as a tack. Miss Paul every Tour since his passing.
Glad to hear from you Phil!!!!!!! Save the Animals!!!!!!!! Thank you Phil for all the TDF and all races you broadcasted!!!!!! I grew up listening and following your career.Glad to see you. Be Safe👍🏼
I've always loved Phil Liggett's commentary, but I have not followed cycling for many years, and I never had any idea he was such an amazing human being. Fantastic interview.
I was lucky enough to meet Phil many years ago along with Graham Watson Tour de France photographer - both icons of the sport - wonderful men - Miss Paul as well cheers
2010 TDF stage 20 on the Champs-Élysées, Phil commented live on TV "and where's the Max missile", a milli second later Cav decided to accelerate past everybody in the Peloton and win yet again, as phil commented "and there he goes, nobody can catch this kid", brilliant stuff absolutely UNFORGETTABLE. The best TDF commentator ever, thanks Phil.👍
The clever sayings , like “Oooooh no-He’s in a spot of bother”…. Or my favorite “Sean Kelly’s world number one ranking is beginning to look tarnished….” His voice is synonymous with Pro cycling…. He’s an absolute genius behind the mic!!!
Phil completely abandoned any façade of being a journalist when he covered Lance... never asked a hard question, ignoring a MOUNTAIN of evidence Lance was doping.
"Great to hear from you Phil. I have always been a huge fan of Lance Armstrong. So many people say he raced unfairly because of the doping....I say no. Look at the record....EVERYONE was doping. to me, that makes the playing field level and Lance was the best. The competition was in pedaling..Lance did it best. and in doping...Lance did it best Training...Lance did it best. Remember that all the other pros raced in so many run ups to TdF but Lance didnt do any of them. ALL his training was for only one thing and that was TdF. He had better focus than anyone and it paid off. He's my HERO.
Arrogance isn’t a sign of playing dirty. He never gave “evasive answers.” He always flat out denied the drugs. What guards? The ones who ratted him out because they couldn’t get a job with Lance (Landis), or they were threatened by a grand jury (Hincapie, Leipheimer), or were themselves busted and looking to shift the blame (Hamilton)? The entire peloton was/is doped. All of them. That’s why tons of competitors respect and call him a friend today (Basso, Ullrich, Andy Schleck) or defended him (Wiggins) or at least don’t throw stones, for OBVIOUS reasons (Contador).
It hit him hard because he had his head stuck clear up his a55 when Lance and everyone else were riding so fast up HC climbs that they to use their breaks in corners.
"Legendary commentator Phil Liggett tells Bevo why Lance Armstrong's drug confession hit him hard!" Because either: A: He's incompetent as a cycling "journalist" if unconnected randos like me were certain Armstrong was doping years before Liggett realized it. or B: He was complicit in Armstrong's lies. I'm not sure which is the case.
@@PoliticusRex632 "he was somewhat aware " No, he was claiming Armstrong was clean years after a lot of us were certain the guy was doping. He was one of the last Armstrong defenders. And now we have people defending the defenders. LOL.
No question... Cvd lockdowns were total fraud a trial run for climate lockdowns and other tyranny.... btw have to say the pro cycling world seems particularly clueless about all this with masks still common at TdF
The title is click bait. Leggett talked about Armstrong for less than a minute out of the entire 26 minutes interview. Also Armstrong was not the only rider to dope (they all did - before and after the Armstrong era). So basically the riders doped for essentially all of those 50 years Leggett worked in the Tour. So Leggett is clueless not to notice.
Doping was much different under the Armstrong camp, in terms of sophistication, costing over 1 million per year, just for Lance. What really matters was that it was NOT a level-playing-field
@@creativity.studio4967 just because a few guys find the next drug or technique to get ahead - that will always be the case - and if guys dont want to take drugs or cheat , the playing field will never be level

By no means is this meant to be negative because I absolutely love Phil, especially when he's commentating with Bob Roll but isn't it amazing how they can make people look on television because man he looks rough right here compared to just a month ago when he was commentating the tour. I hope we have Phil another 50 years!
198 entries in ever one of Lance'sTDFs and@196 of 'em we're on somethin'.!! Lance should get all 7TDFc back until Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens and myriad others lose all their records. Enough bullcrap already!!

Thanks for those lovely words mate. You're spot on though, an absolute gentleman who has achieved so much as a Broadcaster in the sport of cycling!
Love you Phill thanks for the memories brother.
Love Phil from back in the mid 1980's when I got into cycling
Loved listening to Phil and Paul ( rip) one of the best tdf stage 12 2012 brilliant
While out on training rides in the 80's and 90's, we were always trying to do our best Phil and Paul imitations.
And we did our best "Glass Cranking".😉
Great commentators. Impossible to believe he never knew about armstrongs doping.
if he said 'he's turning on the afterburners' once, he said it a thousand times. a true great in the cycling world and missed.

Voice of cycling...but part of the omerta
The Voice of Le Tour e France
Question: did Sean Kelly coin the phrase “full gas”? I hadn’t heard it before he said it.
Sean Kelly used to have a French accent 😂
More famous than most cyclists!
What is Phil’s documentary called?
Phil Liggett- The Voice of Cycling.
I tried to find it online. Seems they only offer to stream in Australia.
Ah sorry to hear. That's a real shame. :(
Phil and Paul would insist he was clean. Then after, completely washed over it. Shameful.
Never understood why they thought he was clean. His arrogance, his evasive answers, his protective shield of guards, nasty piece of work.

@rockhopper01 Not its not a sign of playing dirty certainly. He didn't flatly deny ,he said he never failed a drugs test (not true I believe).
Because he profited from the fantasy of Armstrong being clean. So he either lied about Armstrong or was subconsciously deluding himself.

Hopefully when they try again enough people will refuse, compared to the many who complied 2-3 years ago

Covering cycling for 50yrs and he's stunned to find out Lance was juiced. BS! Everyone has been juiced in cycling since bike racing began.
Yep, Armstrong got screwed. Yep, he juiced and so did every single other cyclist he race against.
