  • The junction of the High Road and the Broadway has seen relatively little architectural change in the last 60 years. Naturally, the passage of time has seen shops and businesses come and go. Traffic flow has also changed, notably in the mid-80s after the opening of Chapel Road and Winston Way, and here we return to the final year of two-way flow across the Broadway between Ilford Hill and the High Road. Council proposals as part of the Western Gateway project at Ilford Hill include the reinstatement of the two-way flow for buses and cycles. *Please note The White Horse rebuild date should show 1889 rather than 1888 (thanks to Jeff Kenny)

Used to wait in the Ratners passage for the 169 bus home from school on rainy days. Sometimes I wouldn't make it to school because I'd stay in Dixons too long playing with their demo Nintendo (Mike Tysons Punchout, mostly). Anyway, after a few weeks of binge watching this channel I've been inspired to book myself a trip back home in a couple of months to see Ilford for real again :)

The locations and vices of a misspent youth! I'm excited that a binge-watch has encouraged you to take a trip 'back home', but I do hope it won't taint the romantic memories of yesteryear, what with all the change in the intervening years.

@@IlfordRetro Well, tbh some of the other videos I have seen about Ilford being murder mile and Ilford Lane being a red light district have already kind of tainted my ideas about Ilford. Your channel has reminded me how happy I was there. There was a good one about the pioneer market as it was closing down (I recall you referenced it in your own video) but it had a end of an era sadness about it too.

@@divinity176 ah yes, silly of me to not even think about some of the other content that's out there. I know what you mean about that Pioneer Market documentary, as it had an air of change about it, a place that had till that point stood the test of time in its shops, owners and customers. Well, through this channel I try and focus on the positive and factual and what we can each jog our memories of happy times from, so it's great that it has encouraged your return to these shores in the near future, to jog that memory futher.

It just look so different back then people were spending money was good people were happier. Today just looks so dull gloomy and as for banks good luck finding one let alone one open on a day and time that’s convenient to you. I did smile when I saw the gas shop I remember as a kid mum giving me the cheque to pay the bill while she was doing the banking and we meet half way and carry on with stuff
Good vid more to come I hope. May want to revisit Chigwell and Chigwell station a lot has changed since your last vid Volvo gone and in process a co-op, Martin shop now a Morrisons express/ PO , hsbc gone now domino pizza and new flats. See you soon

A great memory about the Gas place, when you could pay your bill in there and invariably the kids were told to do it while the parents went and did something less boring! Thanks for the notice to get over to Chigwell, I'll have to make a trip over there. It seems that everywhere that's near a tube station falls under the weight of change sooner or later.

Something else long gone, the Leyland Titan buses, of which the majority of the LT ones ran in the East.

Me too! Bet you're talking about the section of the park near the so-called "pancake" (a round, elevated section of land). Spent many a debauched night in South Park too when I was a little older and had discovered girls and Thunderbird (the drink).

I remember load of singles of david soul don't give up us baby in the co-op skip . along side some abba records dancing queen. we lived britannia road at the time.

Thanks @@junehoward6668 and you're welcome. I wish I could have had a photo from a bit further back in time, but at least it shows how that end used to look. Some of the buildings have changed along with the types of shops. So Co-op got rid of all those singles in their skip?!??!? Well worth a rummage for those classics 👍
