For me, the Mac Mini is a no-brainer since I currently am using a 2012 Mac Mini with a 1TB hard drive and 16 GB of ram. I already have a 32" Samsung Monitor, a magic keyboard, and a mouse that I love, and a pair of Bose Series III Companion speakers, so for the price of the base model 24" iMac I can upgrade the M1 Mac mine to 16 GB of ram and 1 TB of SSD.

IF you have leftover accessories M1 Mac Mini is the best bang for buck for 4 reasons:
    1. Sustained CPU load for its ventilation space. Another youtuber made a comparison between the entry iMac and the mid-tier to make a point about the heat dissipation.
    2. For most people the integrated ports provided will be enough. On the entry iMac one has to factor in the hub cost.
    3. 1Gbps ethernet port
    4. One can probably get it a refurbished, thus lowering the cost of acquisition.
Else, the iMac entry is great for its screen quality, matching peripherals and additional bonus for its aesthetic factor.
For the serious pro, 24inch probably won't cut. I work on a 4K 27inch, use Spectacle app to squeeze every screen pixel + use mission control's desktop switch and still would love a 30/32 inch monitor.

I would say a 22-24inch 1440p or 27-32 inch 4k monitor would be perfect. Anything over 160 dpi would look good for a monitor. These RUclips reviews of the M1 Mac Mini and M1 iMac are very interesting, but it seems like to many key questions are left unanswered. I currently use an aging 21" Core i5 iMac, which the M1 iMac model replaces. There is a lack of comparison between older models in terms of real-world usage and what the newer models offer (or fail to offer). (NOTE: I am also a former MacBook Pro user).
For one thing, I'm shocked that no RUclips reviewers bothered to answer some obvious questions (comparison or no): (1: Can the new Apple TouchID keyboard be paired with the M1 Mac Mini, and will TouchID work? That's a significant issue, and it's ridiculous nobody addresses it (especially when you have both computers right there. (2: If the soon-to-be-released redesigned MacBook Pros are supposed to include an SD card slot, why don't any RUclips reviewers call attention to both the M1 iMac and M1 Mac Mini lacking this port? Does Apple think everyone should throw away their SD-card-based cameras and just buy iPhones? (3: The M1 Mac Mini offers 2 USB-A ports. Why doesn't the M1 iMac offer at least one? (Apple could have built an SD card slot, a USB-A port and maybe even a USB-C port into the side of the iMac, right next to the headphone jack.)
At least one RUclips channel (Lamar MK) has shown an alternative M1 Mac Mini setup using a lesser-resolution monitor (29” LG 29WN600-W 21:9 UltraWide). This may not seem a good choice for someone who is doing video production on a daily basis, but for those of us who only work with video occasionally, the 29” LG 29WN600-W is an important sub-$250 alternative that would significantly lower the overall cost of a working M1 Mac Mini desk setup.

I believe Apple publicly stated that they have no intent to sell the TouchID KB separately at this time, making the first question moot for the most part. Would be interesting if they did though wish I could get it for my M1 MBP

I think I heard someone say that the touch ID Keyboard would pair and work with the M1 Mac Mini. Keep in mind all these are first generation products and most of the software still isn't optimized to run on them. My wife has the 2017 21.5" i5 iMac and it is plenty fast enough for what she does. I just bought the 2020 27" 6 months ago with an i7 in it. I don't intend to replace either anytime soon. Give them a few years to roll out their entire line and get the bugs worked out. If your current computer is doing what you need it to do, then why upgrade? The specs look impressive that is for sure. When I upgraded my 2013 iMac for this 2020 one. Yea is a little faster but I can't say it feels night and day faster. The biggest difference I could see was in the retina display. If you have money to burn then go ahead and upgrade every year. My 2013 iMac was still a good computer when I sold it. I sometimes use Windows in Bootcamp and I upgraded because I knew this would be the end of running Windows in bootcamp on my Mac. It is also the last iMac that will have user upgradable RAM. Most people don't do high power things like video editing or even Photoshop. Most just check emails and browse the web and these new 24" will be just fine for them. I am disappointed in the ports too. I also feel that printers and scanners still use USB-A and there should have been a couple on the new iMacs but the damn thing is so thin they probably won't fit unless they put them on the side like they did with the headphone jack. Maybe the new 30" or what ever the bigger one is will have more ports but I am not holding my breath. It appears donglegate has come to the iMac which gives me another reason to use my 2020 iMac until it totally falls apart which should be years from now

If I were buying today, I'd get the Mini. With that being said, I just setup a brand new Green iMac M1 and it is pretty tempting as well. Definitely makes my 2012 Mini and 2014 MacBook Pro feel slow in comparison.

If I were to buy a computer today, I would go with the iMac 24" because I only have a wired mouse and I would have to buy all that equipment separately. I mainly just use the Internet and I hear the iMac works very well for that. I also maintain a website using 2019 Visual Studio Community and if the iMac can run that then I would be all set! I have a 1080p laptop now and moving up to 4K videos would be great.

It seems the mac mini isn't that much faster, I'd love a comparison for video editors only, especially for those who are not super familiar with all of the functions of the parts that make the machines fast :)

My 2011 27'' iMac just stopped working (display) so I was dead set on getting another 27" iMac until a video on Mac Mini M1 popped up on RUclips. After some research, I decided on the Mac Mini 16gb RAM 512GB storage. I got a Dell 27' monitor for $175, speakers and USB hub from Amazon and I'm all set. I already have a perfectly working Magic Mouse & keyboard. I ended up saving about $800? IDK, I just know its basically a bargain.
The Mac Mini is perfect for me, I mostly use it for web surfing, Netflix and listening to music - very basic. 8GB would've been sufficient but I decided to 16GB just to be on the safe side and I will probably use it until it dies.

    • @lorenschwiderski
      @lorenschwiderski 3 года назад +1

Ethernet plugs into the power brick, USB A needs adapters for plug-in ports type C I believe it is to A. the headphones jack in on the side. Base model lacks Ethernet as standard, the finger print reader, one GPU core, and more importantly lacks a fan on the processor side, leading the heat build-up - throttling. If you want cool and less fan noise, get the second model up and avoid the base model. The Mac Mini runs the coolest. It's a clean machine :)

So far, I try mine on a ultrawide screen, vertical screen, 4k screen... still trying to decide what can work best. Storage can be tough Mac system generate a lot of junk space and it's not easy to manage. I made 3 ten minutes video and already using up 100 gb of space. And my based model only has 250 gb. It's so stupid. How can 10 minutes of video end up becoming 30 gb of space in iMovie?
