The improvements on these scenes are fantastic. I can tell you've given a lot of thought on how the characters Express themselves through subtle movements. I cant wait to see if this can become a mod for kiwami. Also side note the picture change of kiryu and that random meme in the flash back was hilarious. Cant wait to see more!
Never really noticed the facial animations on Kiwami were lacking till now. Splendid work Janfon! The long battle finale cutscene works in both ways oddly enough. The OG Kiwami Kiryu face makes for a real badass stoic approach, while yours gives it that human touch he starts to show in later games - more expressive and truly ready to fuck their shit up. I'm so proud to have been a subscriber since your early Vermintide animations, and while my love for Vermintide has since been dulled, my appreciation for your videos has not seen the same way. Keep up the good work my man! and I hope for more Yakuza shit too alongside your Vermintide videos!
This is incredible. My main gripe about the Kiwami remakes is that half of if not most of the facial animations are just very static and don't show much emotion compared to the originals. This mod is not only going to make it like that but even better.
To be fair, you can't just copy paste animations from a ps2 game and expect it to work flawlessly on better models. Some animation data will be lost and kiwami team were on a short amount of time. And even if all animations did work, aint no way it'll look great on higher quality models
This was my biggest complaint about Kiwami (and Kiwami 2), that the cutscenes still using PS2 animations are just.. strange, especially coming off of 0, which had amazing cutscenes. I'd preferred the PS2 cutscenes, but this mod really changes that for me, amazing work!
Yeah, I think they ported the og animations onto the newer models but didn't do much to adjust some of the animations and facial expressions. Both Kiwamis were probably rushed in development and RGG just cut a bunch of corners. This might be a hot take to some but RGG should've scrapped some of the new content and focused on just making the original games better. (Or better yet, just extend the damn deadline)
And PS2 animations are really noticeable not only because they're lacking some details and expressions but also, funnily enough, because they're way too expressive sometimes. Like you have a simpler model so you make it look "livelier" by exaggerating some of the movements which looks imo extremely jarring when used on more complex models.
This is really amazing work and if you somehow managed this treatment with all the non New-Nishiki scenes I have to imagine this would be a must download mod for any K1 playthrough.

The remake, with Kiryu getting into a fighting stance, shows a more realistic, active reaction to the situation at hand. The original, where Kiryu hardly moves conveys his strength and that this army of guys is so insignificant to him he doesn't even need to ready himself.
Maybe for the final scene have Kiryu slowly building up his stance? Although imo the classic pose works for nostalgia as if he is semi taunting/challenging them. One thing if possible I would suggest a change for is maybe some walking animations
The humour in this is on point. Makes it exciting to watch your progress, and just an entertaining video in general. For some feedback, keep Kiryu's mouth closed in the last scene. It makes him look more stern & dignified. Keeping it open makes Kiryu look less composed.
I agree with you, it already took ten tries to get it to look right and it's still a bit iffy lol. I think it's the knees, I wanted him to crouch down into his combat pose but it looks odd

Kiryu is as stiff as a board, didn't really notice it in my first playthrough until I saw videos restoring Kiryu's facial animations from the original Yakuza and realised that Kiryu is capable of different emotions besides "R1 to lock on"
I want to get used to seeing this more, but I’ve just come so conditioned to seeing kiryu be completely emotionless most of the time, but i could get used to this

I feel like with the mob fight, kiryu could’ve used the same eyes as before cuz the reanimated eyes look a lil janky. But this is still a cool project, keep going!
when he gets in his dragon of dojima fighting pose, his arm (elbow) flaps like a chicken wing in the last scene unlike all the other scenes, needs some polishing imo but overall good work 👍
Truth be told the idea got abandoned, I was working on it when my interest in the series was at an all time peak and I wanted to try out sth with modding cutscene animation. No one else seemed to have tried that before in the community and my work got the most traction. Since then I haven't touched it once :/ sorry Doesn't help that I just don't like Kiwami lol so yeah. I may return to this one day, people are free to contribute to this as well, all up in the air by now

I think this video is a good idea but at certain turns reminded me of the facial animations from like a PS1 tekken when the guy drops his dad off the cliff. They definitely could have done better with the facial tech of today though
Keep practising! Your results will get better over time, you just need to acknowledge criticism and always find something to improve. In my case it was odd posing, odd pacing, fixing texture issues etc, one by one I reached one milestone after another. It's going to be an endurance run, good luck on your journey!

I think it's funny (and kinda sad) that a remake of a PS2 game, released 11 years later has lower quality animations, despite all of them being ported straight from the original with minor tweaks, so they work with newer models. Especially the facial animations are really weak in Kiwami. I don't really like this game, but I 100% respect the work you put into this. One of the most important parts of storytelling is how you show it and your tweaks really sell the scenes better. I hope you have a nice day :))

I'd say Kiwami 2 is even worse, at least when it comes to the lip sync. It's more noticeably off in that game compared to Kiwami 1.
